PTI becoming a drawing room party?

The votes PTI drew in the previous elections were due to its popular politics. One can still visualise the images of Imran khan organising anti drone marches, peace marches and sitting in the sitins organised by Hazaras. The government that we had during that time both in the capital as well as balochistan seemed to be indifferent to the plight of the people. Raisani offered to send the grieving families a truck load of tissues. ANP also closed itself in a shell, cutting the contacts with the people. The end result of anp and PPP is in front of us.

One might say that Shahbaz sharif standing in knee level water is photo ops but I think that also creates an image of a man who is concerned about his people (one reason why the party got votes in south Punjab). I have not seen any role of PTI as opposition (on the federal level too), if they don’t do a proactive opposition then PPP will happily do it. PPP is always more effective as opposition. The recent events are showing that they have started stealing the show.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

Too early to start opposing the government on most issues except ONE and that is "Terrorism" It should have been taken up by Fed gov and opposition from Day 1. This is where PTI needs to be pro active and also push PMLN government to take decisive actions.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

Pakistan main opposition main rah kar barhkian buhat martay hain. Jab zimadari ka waqt aatay hay to barhon barhon ki hawa nikal jaati hay. Power hungry or otherwise people never realized the ground realities and difficulties faced by the previous government. I wonder where are the people who use profanity against PPP govt day and night for being corrupt or inefficient. I have always asked the question what difference would it make whether IK or NS rule? Do you see any difference? Except Desert Bird's meaningless threads what new government has done to reduce the problems of people? Just give me one example. What steps they have taken to curb terrorism?

IK can understand why IK is not active as he was active before elections. To me it is the injury which caused him to perform 25% to 30% what he was working earlier.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

At least in KPK the government should be with the people during their hardships (remember Shahbaz Sharif's camp in Minar e Pakistan, all of us crticised it but it did convince a whole lot of people that he was with the people). These gestures are small but they have a lot of meaning for a whole lot of people. And on the federal level as well they should give their point of view on different challenges facing the country. The only fear I have is that I feel the party is on the way to become another PPP or ANP.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

Btw where was the Titli Pehlwan CM of KPK on the day of Flag cermony? I heard some ANP guy was bashing him on absence other day on tv.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

We tolerated PPP for 5 years. It is only fair to give the new governments a few months to set their feet. 2 months is a very short time to criticize the govt for policies. You can criticize them for decisions right away, but as for policies, you have give them time. Decisions, like GST hike, no salary hike for public servants etc had an immediate impact, and there was an effective opposition to those from day 1. However, things like power cuts, terrorism etc will require some time for policy drafting, and implementation. Remember, in most cases, we are starting from scratch, because the previous govt did virtually nothing.

Additionally, there are echoes of PPP and PML-N nexus rising up again from the ashes in order to serve their mutual interests. 100s of committees have been formed by the govt, and apparently, Imran Khan has not been assigned to any committee. The public accounts committee chairmanship is quite likely going to Asif Zardari's sister....a sign of reconciliation by PML-N, as most of the cases pending in front of PAC are those of PPP. Perhaps a handshake between PPP and PML-N is already in the offing, where PML-N will 'allow' PPP to stall cases against PPP in the PAC, and also turn a blind eye to stuff that PML-N does. That is where it gets tricky, because, essentially, it fractures the opposition, and leaves PTI all alone. Perhaps that is the motive of these parties to begin with.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

I think that a big part of the problem is that Imran painted a rosy picture of how he would improve things when he would come to power and it is just not possible barring some absolutist or dictator to do them in such a short time. It may have gotten him the votes, but it also sets him up for huge disappointment as well. Imran also hasn't had an Obama moment yet, where he figured out rhetoric is one thing but governing taking different skills. Even with the briefings or intelligence that he must have seen from intelligence and police, PTI is still very naïve about the Taliban threat.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

Your two paragraphs are contradicting each other.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

OP is essentially talking about good PR tactics than policies.

While I do agree that PTI needs to upgrade its PR machinery and actively engage in all mainstream issues but from whatever I'm reading in the media, it looks like they are still right on money with all their local work and policies - something that needs to be highlighted before anything else. God knows what PPP is doing in Sindh, if they are doing anything at all. However, PTI is actively launching social reforms in KPK, of course mainstream media wouldn't highlight this so it really is the job of PTI PR team to bring this into public attention. I'm more concerned about what PTI is doing for the people of KPK than how frequently and effectively they lock horns with the federal government.

I'd personally give all parties good 6-8 months (even a full year) before I start forming pretty decisive opinions about them.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

Marketing the steps KPK government is understanding needs to be marketed well.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

From a very personal point of view, I do feel that overall image of PTI is deeply linked with overall performance of Imran Khan. In many ways, there's a definite psychological angle to it, just because we don't see Imran giving wonderfully inspiring and righteously controversial interviews and speeches thrice a day (I'd like to think he finally has a day job), we somehow assume that entire party has gone into hibernation. However, just to link my post with the OP, three days ago PTI moved the anti drone resolution in the Punjab assembly but since Imran personally didn't announce this on the media, the general public is under the impression that maybe nothing at all had happened.

No one from PTI can match Imran's energy and charisma and I don't think they are in a position to produce the next big political superstar (yet) who could dominate the media like Imran. So to me even if PTI is carrying on with their manifesto, the party without Imran's from the front leadership doesn't really grab much attention.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

I think it really is the job of passionate PTI supporters and people like me to write to them, ask them, suggest them the ways to improve their PR.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

There's one thing that I'd like to add, a few days back when Karachi was flooded MQM's MNA's/MPA's flooded Karachi and the photo ops began. PTI was missing for the most part of day 1. I agree that its not the jobs of representatives to do it, but until there's some local government structure in place people do expect their elected representatives to be with them in their hour of despair. Later on PTI's members also had to participate, that I believe was right. Similarly in KPK, the party should show to the people that they are with them at all times.

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

hence the reason for starting this thread, with the hope that someone from the party might notice it. ;)

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

i think its too early to say that...
PTI is working, though pace is slow, but its steady.
RoI bill which is going to come very soon (hopefully) will provide the infrastructure for eradication of corruption. police reforms already started, local govt bill already there

where they are lacking is, education department, just claiming that from next year KP schools will teach aitchison curriculum is not enough, exactly how that will happen, we need to see the progress. one big thing PTI is lacking is standing up with people (KP and elsewhere) when they are hit by terrorism or flood or anything else, as Ali said, call it publicity stunt or whatever, Shehbaz is better at it.
one other thing PTI needs is unity among its own cadre, its a start-up (as far as being in govt is concerned, its their first chance) there are lots of opportunities and people/groups are struggling to seize them, grouping will be harmful.

I'm hearing that there are now PTI goons in Karachi collecting Bhatta like the rest of these corrupt political parties, is that true?

Re: PTI becoming a drawing room party?

Thing is, PTI really lacks in PR. I know for a fact that PTI reps were out there since the very first hour in badly affected areas but they were working and not photo-oping. which in this dirty games of politics, they should do to gain visibility.
