Protesters attack author Nasreen....

Muslim protesters have attacked controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen during a book launch in Andhra Pradesh state in southern India.

Ms Nasreen backed into a corner as objects rained down and she was threatened with a chair, witnesses said. One witness said Ms Nasreen was slapped.

The writer left Bangladesh for Sweden in 1994 after her controversial writing there led to calls for her execution.

These men attacking a woman should have some shame. They have a habit of hitting women. They try to intimidate them so they can’t raise their voice.

I think if the religion is true, the belief steadfast and the faith unswerving then there is no need to get violent. Yes, one should let the objections known, but in a civilized way. Being civilized is one most important things a religion teaches.

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

interesting. what did she write about?

I guess I'd be shot dead too for some of my posts lol

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

Shame on them...bloody morons

seems like a nice lady…

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

She is one of them who wrote some anti islamic stuff and it became top bestseller in a night.

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

I understand difference of opinion, but to ban books and beating people up sends the opposite impression. I visited the lady's site. Did not see anything strikingly in favour of injustice. Isn't Islam for and not against justice? If at all, I would stop short of saying she is misguided. Hate for something doesn't just spring up out of nowhere. It has its roots and causes.

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

I agree with you...... people(like these in the news who beat her up) are the reason for taslima and salman rushdie's fame.

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

She exposed the discrimination against women in the current interpretations of Islamic texts.

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

I can't comment on her much since I only read what is on her webste. Salman Rushdi on the other hand had really wierd concepts... But his style was too bland and really I did not see anything extraordinary so you are correct in your assessment about him. I think the main thing we need as a society is to have tolerance, just as is the example of the prophet. The Truth does not need anyone's help... it's the Truth and comes out eventually. If anything, the prophet was persecuted by his people... why should we act on their "sunnah" correct? :)

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen…

Thiruvananthapuram: ‘Islam is history because we live in the 21st century now’, opined controversial exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen on Tuesday.

“The Islam religion and their scriptures are out of place and out of time. It still follows 7th century laws and is hopeless. The need of the hour is not reformation but revolution,” Taslima told reporters.

According to Nasreen, noted Kerala writer Kamala Surayya, who was Kamala Das before she converted to Islam, had now realised that she had made a mistake in converting to Islam. She had held a meeting with Surayya earlier.

“When I asked her if she regrets becoming a Muslim, she said ‘yes’. She has realised that Islam does not give equality,” said the writer.

Irshad Manji’s interview with Taslima Nasrin

IM: Liberal Muslims would say that there are plenty of other verses that treat women with dignity, and fundamentalists ignore those elements to suit their own agenda.

TN: Maybe liberal Muslims are morally decent, but they’re not following Islam honestly. Fundamentalists are. They’re following the “word of God,” and the orders of Prophet Muhammad exactly. So it’s not true that Islam is good for humanity. It’s not at all good. Islam completely denies human rights and treats women very badly.

IM: Even as a child, you asked the question, “Why should the Koran be in Arabic?” Tell me that story.

TN: Bengali Muslims read the Koran in Arabic because we are told that Allah says it is good to read the Koran in its original language. But very few people know the language and the real meaning of what they are reading. As a child, I was told that Allah knows everything. Well, everything means everything. So Allah should know Bengali, shouldn’t He? I was curious: How come I have to pray in Arabic? When I want to talk to Allah, why do I have to use somebody else’s language and not my own? My mother did not have any answers. She memorized the Koran because it is written in the hadiths that when you die, two angels will come and ask questions of the soul. The answers will have to be given in Arabic, otherwise your grave will squeeze you so hard. Why wouldn’t those angels know Bengali? It’s as if God has occupied the minds of Muslims, invaded them.

For freedom of expression - by Taslima Nasreen

November 12, 1999 - Taslima Nasreen took the floor during Commission V of UNESCO’s General Conference, as a delegate of the NGO “International Humanist and Ethical Union” (I.H.E.U.).

Here is the full text of Ms Nasreen’s declaration:

"I was threatened by the religious fundamentalists in my country Bangladesh. They have decreed a fatwa against me and set a price on my head. Not only that, I am a criminal according to the government of my country too. The government there has banned my book, and issued an arrest warrant against me for committing blasphemy. I was forced to leave my country. Since 6 years I have been living in exile.

I was born in a Muslim family, but I became an atheist. In course of my training in science, I developed the powers of observation, experiment, analysis, and reasoning. Without reasoning, I found, nothing should be accepted as fact. I have been fighting against injustice, unreason, and prejudice. I exposed the crimes of religion, particularly the injustice and oppression against women.

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen…

She has vented astonishment that “seventh-century law” should rule any Muslim societies today.

My comments about religion made people angry. I said that Islam oppresses women. I criticized verses in the Koran that treat women as property, as sexual objects. And I argued that we don’t need religious laws … when I began to study the Koran, the holy book of Islam, I found many unreasonable ideas. The women in the Koran were treated as slaves. They are nothing but sexual objects.

A confirmed secular humanist she takes grave exception to those Western intellectuals who promote the view that to demand separation of church from state is tantamount to Western colonization of Islamic culture. ‘Some liberals always defend Islam and blame fundamentalists for creating problems. But Islam itself oppresses women. Islam itself doesn’t permit democracy, and violates human rights.’

^these are valid questions... shows how good a job we've done in deterring people from God's message...

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

yawn

so if the guidance is not taken literally and interpreted to apply to modern scenarios than its not following Islam honestly, and if it not interpreted and some old iterpretation is used then its not at all good.

I dont have tme to waste on her..next...

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

Oh Taslima Nasreen ??? well we have some of her books in our home. as they are in bengali, and i am not so fluent in reading the script, only my parents have read them.
she is currently resiting in Calcutta.

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

Another fly by night, junkie that has made a name for herself by saying what some idiots would pay to hear

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

Arrrey bhai, how moronic is that? Taslima Nasreen has to understand that Koran is written in Arabic and thats the way it should be read- Bengali is the language of Hindus- anything that is written left to right is not acceptable to me. This is the reason why Pakistan had to part ways with the Bengalis. Thank god for creating Bangladesh. Ek dum bewakoofon waali baatein kar rahi yeh moti aurat. Infact, Pakistan should seriously consider making Arabic the national language(alongwith Punjabi)

Re: Protesters attack author Nasreen....

I damn wonder when Baba Raheem (The sikh guy who adopted an avatar of Guru Gobind Singh) where were these threads even he maligned there religion i wonder where are you people when non-muslims pass on such comments and go scott free, but for muslims we have to answer each and everything and issue is exaggerted it is exacerbating.

Overall muslims have to show tolerance, but media have to stop this BS i dont understand why do we have double standards amongst non-muslims in issues like this.

Well thats my opinion.
