Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Is this the first time a new road is being named on Non-Muslim name?

Pakistan Delays Decision To Rename Lahore Landmark After Bhagat Singh

Pakistan’s decision to rename Lahore’s Shadman Chowk after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh has been put on hold following protests from hardliners like the Jamaat-ud-Dawah and a section of local residents.

The decision to rename Shadman Chowk as Bhagat Singh Chowk, to acknowledge his role in the struggle for Indian independence from the British colonizers before the partition of India to form Pakistan, was announced by the city district government of Lahore Sept. 29.

Civil society activists from both India and Pakistan hold candlelight vigils at this location — the spot where Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged on March 23, 1931 — every year on the anniversary of the execution, often holding signboards proclaiming the place as “Bhagat Singh Chowk.”

However, according to a report in the Express Tribune, 13 people objected to the decision to rename the locality, at a hearing to elicit public opinion, saying Pakistan was a Muslim country and its major roads and squares should be named after the Muslims, not the Hindus or the Sikhs. Only six people supported the move.

The renaming of Shadman Chowk is part of a project to revitalize Lahore that will look into renaming several squares, underpasses, roads and intersections after historically significant figures from the region. The city itself had been recently renamed Dilkash Lahore.

In an editorial titled “Honoring Heroes,” the Tribune observed that the “original decision to rename Shadman Chowk, Lahore, after the Indian independence fighter Bhagat Singh was such a surprising and wise one that there was no way it was going to go through without resistance.”

“The name change has now been put on hold for an indefinite period and, if the timidity shown by city officials is any guide, it will be shelved forever,” it said. “This travesty shows not only our intolerance for religious minorities but also how blinkered and limited our knowledge of our own history is.”

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

There are many roads and building named behind names of non-Muslims. We got Gandhi Garden (Zoo) in Karachi. Mohata Palace is still not re-named. But there are circumstances, where names of places were changed to give them Muslim identity :bummer:

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Bhagat never knew that the country that he fought for and the places he grew up will not be called part of India after less than 20 years after his death :D

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

but, why didn't they name the chowk Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk because that's his name he is known to be NOW! Bhagat Singh can be any XYZ but THE Bhagat Singh is NOT complete without the word "Shaheed"...right Ms. **THE **Kaur?:)

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Even Allama Iqbal didn't know what would be the shape of Pakistan he dreamed for

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Allama envisaged loose confederation of muslim states, bhagat was leftist-atheist and was above religious politics, secondly when he decalred himself as atheist it is wrong to continously project him as sikh :)

Douches. Makhi mar jai tu us ka bhi deen pooch kai dafnain ghain!

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Sikh or atheist both are covered under one term. Non-Muslim.

BTW I think Shadmaan is not a new road / chowk, even people who don't live in Lahore know the name of chowk. So apart from religious status of Bhagat Singh, changing a well known name of a place is also problematic

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

There is a city near our village and it’s called seeta, I dont know the story behind it, may be muqaw can explain :hmmm:

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

The area near your village was Hindu majority area before partition. Hindus migrated but the area maintained names of old cities. Ratto Dero and Udero Laal are Hindu names which are intact todate. Abdullah Shah and Liaquat Jatoi (ex CMs Sindh) did their matriculation from Governmnet Parmanand Das High School :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

ek maze kii baat bataauuN...India meN ek beeRii hotii thii jiskaa naam thaa Laal MoHammad...maiN samajhtaa thaa k yeh naam HIndu kaa hai [jaise Natwar Laal] to maiN ne apne vaalid marHoom se poochhaa k is beeRii kaa Hindu/Muslim name kiuN hai? to unhoN ne mujhe bataayaa thaa k yeh do alag alag lafz haiN...ek hai LAAL لال = Red] jo HinduoN kaa naam hai aur dusra hai لعل = gem] jo musalmaanoN kaa naam hai :D good that i knew back then lol

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Laal Muhammad and Laal Chand were common names in Sindh. Even Sindh's sufi saint Qalandar Shabaz is referred as Laal Shahbaz

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

haN, yeh "LAAL" HinduoN waalaa nahiiN hai bal k "La'l" Muslims waalaa hai

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Laal is Red too which is dominant in case of Qalandar laal Shahbaz. Its mix-up. Quratul'ain Haider said in her novel 'Sita-Hiran' that many of the sufi shrines in Sindh have Hindu connections.

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

well, i elaborated the linguistic differences...shrines have nothing but Hindu connections so that's beside the point :)

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Same for Mohammed Ali Jinnah. :D

If he could see today's Pakistan, he would die of heart attack

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Thats another discssion. We will discuss it in Mazar culture :)

BTW, why Indian Government didn't change the name of Aurangabad?

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

In Pakistan, I am trying to think and could be wrong, but majority of name changes that happened, happened of the names that were named after Britishers. Drigh Colny, City of Montgomery, Lyal pur and such are renamed. But Gru Mandar, Gandhi Garden and such remained.

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Mr Jinah grabbed what could be available at that time. As Bapsi Sidhwa portrayed her novel 'Ice-Candy man', general public didn't know which country they would belong till 11th hour. Some were of the view that they would mark separate countries by digging a trench between two countries. There was infact no trench, but partition did created distances which are still there as it is.

Re: Protest to name Pakistani roads after Hindus or Sikhs

Mcleod Road becomes Chundrigar Road, but Rikshaw/ Taxi walas still call it with old name. Patel PaRa is still intact. Raam Swami not changed. Shaanti nagar is still there
