it says a lot about how you view yourselves when your definition of victory is: not being totally and comprehensively extinguished. this is the new definition being used all over the muslim world. you have lost all sense for what victory and loss is. in other words, you implicitly accept the superpower's own ultra-arrogant definition of victory and if you manage to prevent the superpower from achieving all 100 of its insanely lofty and unrealistic goals, then you have achieved victory.

When the US leaves Afghanistan, the Taliban aren't going to take over. This isn't 1989.
All the northerners hate the Taliban, so the US has militias to support with weapons and supplies. The drone and air presence will likely stay. If the Taliban go on an offensive, let alone try to take a city, they'll be stopped.
The purpose of the negotiations is so the above doesn't happen. The purpose of the US presence is so that Afghanistan does not slide into an ethnic civil war where huge numbers are slaughtered. If the US gets a peace sharing agreement, then it hopes a civil war wont explode once it leaves.
