Wow - just read the exchanges above. Nicely done. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of gray.
@ Sehrysh, you are welcome.
It was your brains, your idea. I just googled what you had suggested in your post couple of days ago, when you put up the stats worldwide for docs/ 1000 patients.
In fact, only people in the US who get money are the African Americans, cuz they're so under-represented in medical education. Like literally, you're lucky if you see one black dude in a class, black girls even fewer. So there are affirmative action and scholarship programs for them.
Other than that. No one gets any money. Not sure what cloud you're living on thinking we get free educations here.
I know for a fact that there is a weeding out system here in the US. So many freshman declare themselves premed students but change their majors after a few semesters. Some program make it especially hard the first few semesters to weed out people. Actually the system here kinda stinks but the people who go into med school are the ones with best grades. The reminder go into allied health professions or some other field. A lot ppl quit here too Bc it is very ccostly - a medical school degree costs around 200,000. Unless your parentsare footing the bill, us med school will finish their residency training and work to at least to pay off their loans. thsi applie to carribean school graduates as well. The thing in Pakistan is that it does not cost much to go to medical school. That is part of the reason why girls don't feel as much guilt in not using their degree. many girls are encouraged by their parents to go med school for better rishta or to snag a doctor. It's a definitely a status symbol.
I don't of too many ppl here who have wasted seats here. there are ppl who argue that the system doesn't always ensure that compassionate, caring ppl who are willing to serve humanity get into med school. Again it's he ones with the BEST GRADE. Some of them should not be near patients. Actually there are some truly wonderful nurses and therapists who would have made great physicians but didn't have the money or grades.
Pcg - there is definitely reward for serving humanity. If that is your NEEYAT For becoming a doctor siirely you will be rewarded by the creator for that. If the reason is for social status or money- one achieves that as well. ultimately Allah judges us based on our NEEYAT. but I definitely agre with you it is sad to see a girl who has potential and desire to serve humanity not get the seat over someone who has he desire to do it for good rishta or someone who leaves Pakistan to go abroad for better opportunity . Lets face it vast majority leave Pakistan after getting their degrees. Is that any better? They are serving humanity elsewhere? what kind of litmus tests can you use to make sure ppl stay in a country where no one wants to stay?
It is sad indeed, which is why seems like the pakistani medical system needs to be changed.
But I do still maintain that these tamashay go on even here in the States, although maybe it's a little less likely, with all the loans, and time / money saccrifice here, maybe many desi girls who otherwise would have played the system to get proposals will probably never make those seats.
I dunno, I figure if you're too busy husband hunting in college, you're going to make for a less competetive applicant , but I've seen situations where the best kept women who men are crazy after --> get seats. Cuz they're just that darn good.
Regardless, yeah, it PEEVES me off to no extent what happens with these seats. Do you know how many people want to become docs and can't cuz they don't make the cut? But they probably would have been AWESOME docs?
I've met some DO's and Carribean trained docs that are FANTASTIC, and some pharmacists and PA's that would have been FANTASTIC if they had gone to med school. Clearly, a lot of good applicants are getting elbowed out, and they would have been docs otherwise if it hadn't been for wasted seats!

There usually is minimal difference between DO's and MD's. actually DO seats are pretty difficult to come by these days. Fact is a lot of people want to get into the medical profession. When the economy is bad people stay in school longer...the question is how many actually do it to serve Humanity? If OBAMACARE becomes a reality doctors won't be paid that much. There status will similar to that of physicians in countries with SOCIALIZED MEDICINE.
If not socialized medicine, what? Is the present system where people don't have insurance go to ER axbetter solution? Why is it that those who have healthcare don't want socialized medicine.?
My understanding is Obamacare is harder on insurance companies requiring them to pay a min % of premium received for healthcare. I believe he has made it easier for folks to retain healthcare even if they lose jobs. Pre-existing conditions will no longer be a death sentence.
I guess the good doctors who primary mission is to serve wont mind a cut in pay. Though I think it is them insurance companies who probably will get hit harder by Obamacare. And that is a good thing.
It's a little naive to think that most people become doctors because of a desire to serve humanity. They do it because it brings them prestige, they make a lot of money, and they probably have family pressure to pursue a career in medicine.
That's the reality ghost, which is exactly what I'm griping about.
I have been PRAYING for obamacare, I don't give a crap what it does to my income. Who cares? I make enough money mA to buy myself what I need with some few luxuries here and there that are not anything close to what my desi counterparts probably buy given that most of them aren't even working.
So, I don't care for the paycut. Others who got into it for the wrong reasons are gonna be angry, sure, but for the most part, the people I know are all hoping it will pan out.
It's sad watching poor people and middle class folks being unable to afford their care when things get bad...
so everybody, tell me whats the positives and negatives from a dude's perspective.
well being a doctor myself I think the biggest con is that there is an attitude from the girl that she is "just as good if not better " than her husband.
Biggest pro is that provided she is working she is financially independent and not likely to be dead weight and a gold digger.
And also if you divorce her she cant rip you off if she is working and earning a good living.
Not a bad option esp for a first marriage !

Well if she marries a na-mard Pakistani, then she likely is better than her husband.
