There is clearly is musch disagreement on this matter amongst Muslima and non.

Some people say that marrying a child that young is acceptable because the population generally didnt live that long but that certainily is not the case here as Mohammed got married many times only once to a girl so young, he also married his senior in age Khadija. So woman of maturity were in abundance.

To the people who do not have an issue with it, do you think it is acceptable for a 40 year old man to marry and have intercourse with a nine year old in the present day? If not, why?

Firstly we cannot superimpose our ideals to the cultures which existed over 1400 years ago. That was the time when Arabs used to bury their daughters alive, they could be married at any age, and no consent was required for the purpose. Islam showed a better way to do this, Ayesha’s (RA) consent was sought at 6, and when she agreed the marriage took place at age 9. This was not an unusual age for girls to get married back then. In the western countries even till the 18th century the age of consent was 7 and they could be married between 7 to 12, no parental consent was required after 12. As far as the age difference is concerned even that’s not something out of the blue as well, although the ages of Mary (RA) and Joseph (RA) have not been given in Bible, but some people insist that Mary (RA) was between 12 and 14 and Joseph (RA) was between 50 to 90.
