The American colonies followed the English tradition, and the law was more of a guide. For example, Mary Hathaway (Virginia, 1689) was only 9 when she was married to William Williams. Reliable data for when people would actually marry is very difficult to find. when spoke of Lailatul Qadar said that find it in 7th or 9th night (or something to that effect), instead f saying 27th or 29th. Similarly, when Aisha (RA) was asked about her age of marriage, she mentioned Nikah at 6 and Rukhsati at 9. That means 16 and 19.
