qualities, virtues, states, paradigms … call it whatever, but share, if you like… what to you are the essential basic qualities of an HONEST open mind?
for me it is: a genuine ability to own up to own flaws & then learn to address them.
Evaluates the merit
Consults the heart but takes caution from it's advice
Tests the conclusions before voicing them
Able to learn like a child and teach like a mother
To be sure but afraid of surety
To be honest is not to lie. I think I have stopped myself from lying more often because of a certain ego ("you are not worth it for me to take the trouble of lying to") or a certain wit (it is easier to remember the truth)....only infrequently that lying is bad.
Open minded is a lot easier (at least to me). Repeatedly I find that I win and many lose and the only difference I can find between me and them is that I was ready to sense and change my mind from some position. So I guess an open mind is a stipulation of potential need to change and that implies one is humble enough to know they may have to change.
So I would offer humility as the basic property or pre-qual to open.
And if you really think about it, one has to be honest enough to admit such frailty.
So it becomes humilty and honesty as prequals to open?
stircrasy, u make sense. and ur thought process is indicative of the genuine description that exactly will accompany a real change.
remember that people are only as ethical as they do!
so aspiration is all fine, but making a change in practical terms is the real issue.
humility and honesty go hand in hand since there is nothing to give a front to when one is honest. therefore, an honest and open mind is not afraid of an expose'.
true that a change or a shift in life is possible, yet the core qualities or traits of the person disallows any malice or contamination of any kind. nobility lies in rising up after falling down. this realization that one has to get back up, is honesty in real. for anyone who commits a mistake, admitting that mistake and undoing its effect and not repeating that ever is honesty.
life is a teacher for all this, humans as students have to be doing their part to learn from it, though.
Ask any one to tell you some good qualities of the person they hate/dislike.
Open/honest mind would have abilty to see what his emotions are , and what other persons personality is.
A close mind would be blinded by emotion.
It tell you that if a person is able to look in at aspects before making a judgment.
Mirch,
hiding behind a screen name, is not a bad thing.
it neutralizes the effect of surprise or shock, and it may become a pleasant thing when a truly nice person, if in reality, meets you, ever.
it is of course wise to be carefl whome you allow to speak to you and not fall enticed for a liar or indecent person.
best,
Dushwari
Are we being honest and open minded by hiding behind a nick and too scared to reveal our trueself ?
Just a thought.
Yep .. I think we are skirting around the real issue here. Which is being honest and open minded are requisites in the general sense. There are always exceptions to the rule which have in themselves rules on how those exceptions are to be understood as valid.
Mirch has stumbled upon one such valid exception ... Should we be honest at all costs? Therefore should we go to a pretty woman on the street and tell her how pretty she is? Or perhaps should we tell another of the ugly persuasion just how ugly we think she may be?
In fact lying can also be a form of honesty. When we want to lie and we do so we are being honest with our disposition and tendancy to lie. There is an inner honesty and an outer honesty. Compliance with the self ... compliance with the objective.
This duality of honesty cannot be isolated from concepts such as wisdom if what we are looking for ... goodness as a result from honesty, in which case there are times when evil can be gained from honesty too.
thanks, brother psyah. well put.
honesty in being dishonest is also honesty? is it?
goodness and wisdom is truly necessary to acquire a sense of at least honesty that is closer to absolute honesty.
the paradigm of inner and outer honest is indeed very realistic.
thanks,

I fully concur to psyah. Nicely put as well.
I personally feel that honesty and open-mindedness can many times be opposing qualities. Neither of these qualities to the extremes are desirable.
