proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

below our results of an interesting survey on pak attitude towards america and terrorism. some interesting highlights:

  1. more pakistanis view india more favourably than america despite the fact that india has 500k troops in kashmir while america has less than 200k troops in iran and afghanistan. also given the choice, half of pak would move to america compared to 0% that would move to india.

  2. 70% of residents of nwfp support bin laden despite the frequent suicide bombings in nwfp by bin laden sympathisers. this stat is perhaps the best proof of the jahaluth level of our awam.

  3. around 37% of awam still support musharraf. this percentage would be much higher if nwfp is excluded from survey. musharraf’s support level is pretty remarkable considering he is regarded as america’s tool and 100% of ghaddar presswalahs are against musharraf and in favour of al qaeedah.

  4. nearly 50% of awam favours crackdown on jehadis. again a remarkable stat considering the favourable coverage enjoyed by al qaeedah in our press.

overall, the result of the survey is a good indication of the dangerous role played by ghaddar presswalahs. govt must come up with a strategy to deal with them

WASHINGTON (AP) — Only a quarter of Pakistanis support their military working with U.S. forces to pursue terrorists inside Pakistan, and even fewer favor letting American forces mount such operations on their own, a poll released on Tuesday said.

In a broader measure of America’s unpopularity in its erstwhile ally against terrorism, 19 percent of Pakistanis see the U.S. favorably — half the number with a positive view of India, a bitter rival Pakistan has fought in three wars since 1947. The U.S.-backed Pakistani president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, is less popular than Osama bin Laden, though both are far better liked than President Bush.

Musharraf The Popular

While Musharraf employs every state resource to preserve himself in the presidency, his popularity continues to decline in the masses. He is today even less popular than Osama.

On the bright side, the recent attacks on the judiciary by the executive seem to have sensitized the people to the need for having an independent judicial system. That people also want the govt. to arrange free fair elections, more than a strong economy also echoes the street sentiment here.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

faisal, I am intrigued. How did u reach the conclusion that the awam is not ready for democracy? The people in the survey voted for independent judiciary and free elections more than anything else.

Also interesting is the fact that u have to go on a defensive against Musharraf's popularity ratings. NWFP only had an 11% weight age in the survey as opposed to 57% of Punjab.

Moreover, a majority of the people disapprove of Musharraf's performance, and their opinion about the economy is adverse too. To be quite honest, the results of this survey r not much different from the earlier IRI poll. Both these polls show us that:

1: Musharraf is unpopular.
2: BB and NS r more popular than him.
3: Adverse sentiment about economy
4: Demand for free fair elections

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

maybe the ONLY solution is freedom through democracy. You dont have the right to decide they are not worthy.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

King Faisal the Pakistani love for democracy was amply demonstrated on 12th October 1999 when the overwhelming majority of people in Pakistan welcomed the overthrow of the “elected” govt of Nawaz Sharif. In fact not just the majority of the people, but almost all the politcal leaders and parties - BB, Imran, Qazi, Falur Rehman, ANP and others. It’s a bit rich of them to now say they support the constitution when they supported it’s overthrow in 1999.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

Now if you can correlate the opinions of public about a country far far away and democracy/basis-of-democracy would be great thing, can you?

May be it has more to do with public losing trust in army for atleast internal affairs, dissatisfaction with army for its cruelties in masses (keeping lal masjid and waziristan aside), deep involvement in politics, supporting corrupt elements in politics, failure to provide security, being considered a “yes sir” institution for US interests etc.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

More than support for military govt., it was a reaction on getting rid of the Amir ul Momineen. People were not ready to put up with NS anymore and were willing to welcome any arrangement that got rid of the bad apples. A civilian transition would've been just as welcome at that point in time.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

any nation that supports obl over musharraf is mentally sick and is not worthy of democracy. btw i would bet saddam hussain if he was alive would get more votes than musharraf. perhaps thats the best solution for teaching pakistanis a lesson. let someone like saddam or ahmedinejad come to power and that will pretty much get rid of pakistani love for democracy.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

CJ was one of the people that validated President Musharaf’s rule. So it can’t be a dictatorship.

God Bless Pakistan. God bless CJ. God Bless Pakistani democracy :jhanda:

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

What is it worth of then? Would u be happier if we had a Taliban style Khilafat system going on here? Come on. Say it. :faizy:

Ur arguments in favor or democracy and something else that u did not mention, even though contradictory, r still very convincing. Rock on.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

According to you CJ was a dictator, so how can you take a dictator’s words certifiying another dictator? :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

^ God bless dictator CJ.

Let no one argue otherwise, no matter how disappointing it must be for some :)

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

^ whatever keeps you happy... some people are happy to be living in caves, you can stay happy beleiving in what you do

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

flame of life, i am slowly coming around to democracy argument because i think democracy is the best cure for jahaluth of pak awam. given that literacy levels of pak awam is much lower than that of iranians or iraqis, left to their own devices, pak awam is going to elect leaders much worse than the bozos who rule iran or iraq. few years of pain resulting from living under a tyrant will put pakistanis on the right path. at this point in our history, benevolent leaders like musharraf and shaukat aziz are wasted on us. saddam, bin laden or ahmedinijad is what we deserve.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

benevolent eh? Have u had the chance to experience the benevolence of this regime?

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

Anything which goes against your beloved dictator is down to the jahalat of awam and blah and blah. Have you ever thought about the jahil and third class decisions recently taken by the drill master Mush.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

flame of life, i would rather experience "benevolence" at the hand of musharraf/aziz rather than at the hands of democratic leaders. you however are welcome to to vote for zardari/bhutto/sharifs.

btw my problem with musharraf is that he has not been a dictator enough.if he had acted in pak's best interest, likes of zardari, altaf hussain and rasheed ghazi would not have dared to raised their heads.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

ehsan, i dont agree with all of musharraf's decisions. for example i am extremely critical of his kid glove treatment of jihadists and politicians. i would support overthrow of musharraf by a general who would treat jihad scum and politicians like zardari in a manner they deserve. until a time when such a general arises, i am supporting musharraf.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

U would but u wouldn't. What exactly do u plan to do to feel this benevolence? Feel free to settle in this land of the pure.

:biggthumb

and yes, if I don't vote for BB/Shareef tag team, the only option I have is Chaudhary/Arbab Ghulam Raheem tag team. So ur general isn't throwing any better options at me either.

bawhahahaha..what do u want him to do? Please elaborate.

Re: proof that our awam is not ready for democracy

whatever happened to you? :aq:
