Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

Quite interesting discussions. I know we should not be choosing a name solely based on the way it sounds or is pronounced, meanings are very important too because they say that the name you select is like a dua for the child. Keeping that in mind, we are now looking at the arabic name 'Sarim' with the meanings energetic, bold, courageous, brave, sharp sword, lion. Can you please advise if this is a name that would work well in the west? many thanks.

Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

what do you guys think of the name Imran, would there be any problems pronouncing it in the UK?

No one in the UK would have problems pronouncing the name Imran. Western people are very familiar with this name...No need to worry about that x

Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

i dunno about UK but in the US and Canada they would pronounce as IM-RAN :) bhaagne waalaa RAN :(

Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

thanks Sparrow. it's really hard choosing a boy's name that is easy to pronounce and has a good meaning!!

Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

Imran would be pronounced Em-RAN (like running) but sparrow is right that they are familiar with the name in this country so it wont be a weird name to them.

Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

isnt Imran Khan a famous boxer in the UK? I think your son would have no issues with that name.

Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

^ Nope that's Amir Khan.

Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

^ yeah thats correct.

how does Haris/Haaris sound? I think it is a newer sounding name..

Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

Harris in desi accent would be HAAAAAR-IS were has in english accent would be HAR (how Had is Hat is pronounced) rather than Haar like a necklace.

If that makes sense. Like the name though :)

Re: Pronouncing Names Correctly

^ yeah it would probably be Harris, same as in Harris(on Ford).
