how good is an online Project Management Certificate?
I am thinking of doing it from a local college in NY, but was wondering that if it will benefit me career wise … is online course taken in consideration same as in calss version?
Thanks,
Sanna

Re: Project Management Certificate
what is project management certificate? How is it different from a PMP?
Re: Project Management Certificate
IS it a distance learning program or some free online "tutorial" type certificate? PMP or PRINCE2 certification helps in conjunction with your main field of expertise. If you are planning building your career solely on project management certificate, then I am afraid you are making a mistake. Of course you WILL find a job somewhere, but you will not go to top of the ladder unless you have other professional qualifications OR extensive experience of the industry.

Re: Project Management Certificate
To enroll for the PMP exam you had certain prerequisites.
http://www.pmi.org/Pages/default.aspx
The training will fill one of those pre requisties. You still have to fill the application, be approved to sit for the exam.
I did the online training through my company but the application took about 2-3 days to fill out. It took about 7-10 business days for them to approve it. If you get audited which 25% of the people, they will check with your references about your project management experience.
After you are approved, you can sit for the exam. I recomend about 4-6 weeks of studying besides the courses work and going through exam questions. It’s all applied knowledge and scenarios.
Re: Project Management Certificate
if you are looking to do nline project mgmt certificate program, and want to get it from a well known uni. not sure which one in NYC you are going for, but a couple of good ones that offer online proj mgmt cert are
villanova
george washington
virginia
berkeley
stanford
you may want to look into those as well.
Re: Project Management Certificate
If you have the experience/hours for sitting in PMP, I would go with that.
Anyway, Here is a project management certificate program that I can personally vouch for. Yes, you can enroll in it online. Project Management Certification | Project Management Training Course | Engineering Management - CU Boulder

anything new on this front or are these still the most preferred institutions?
Re: Project Management Certificate
I have not looked into this area for a while
what do u want to do? have structured training on project mgmt?
I think with your experience, you can run circles around most project managers
have a credential?
if its a credential then either go for a PMP certification, in which case where u went for training does not matter.
or get a certificate from the best institution in your area or most well known in your industry.
e.g. if i was in airlines ..i may go to embry riddle,
if i was in NY, I may look for columbia.
Re: Project Management Certificate
Has any one here done PMP? How much time did it take you to prepare ?
I have my Masters in Software Project Management, so will that make it easier to clear the certification?
Re: Project Management Certificate
definitely looking for credential.....just to have in my pocket.
I think the PMP certification is best.
Amir has done it....let me pull him in for a chat.

PMP and Prince2 both ...
having a Master is not enough - you should also have at least three years of project management experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education to qualify to sit in PMP exam ... If you dont have it then you should go for CAPM..
preparation shouldnt take more then 12 weeks
Re: Project Management Certificate
wow 12 weeks? :)
my pals who have done PMP have prepped for it in 3-4 weeks max, with full-time work and family commitments going on as well.
Daffy the big difference between your masters and PMP is that PMI and their PMBOK has specific terminology and their own way, so when they ask for best answer, its from their lens.
Personally, I find PMBOK flawed, restrictive and regimented. It assumes a 'right' approach but does not factor in situations, cultures, org cultures, etc.
what it does provide is a common vocabulary and framework which helps in project teams.
Just realize that to pass this, you will have to learn stuff and answers questions in a way that PMI thinks is right, you don't have to be married to that view once you get the credential in your hand.
last...I would encourage people to go for Agile stuff more. That is a needed skill, the red tape burdened long term projects are still around but the need for quick hit releases is becoming more important due to showing ROI on projects quickly, reacting to market demands quickly etc.

12 weeks for those who dont have 35 hours of project management education to qualify to sit in PMP exam :)
Re: Project Management Certificate
