If you were to get into a profession/line of business that would allow you to spend the most amount of quality time with your family and kids while being able to earn a decent income, what would it be?
Running a home industry.
For example
Teaching man...awesome hours...good pay
freelance software developer, it's a total freedom job, but very unreliable and no security at all :-)

as we professors say... "The hours are flexible as long as you average 90 hours a week!" ... and from 5 years of experience, I can tell you that even that is an understatement. I do a 100 most weeks.
Teaching typically involves a lot of prep work, a lot of admin stuff and if you're working in a University, you have committee based tasks to add to your workload... and most Universities also require you to do research on top of your teaching loads.
So... nope - teaching ain't it! and consulting aint it either!
sigh, the two main things I've tried so far
ummm... Prelude yaar, I'd say it depends on your work ethic - a lot of people who would not bring home any work tend to have a fairly good family life... in some jobs like teaching and consulting, its practically impossible not to bring home any work.
Every job that involves a lot of pay, brings its +ve & -ve factors alongwith it too, da better ur position, da more likely u'll be engrossed in ur work & busy with it...!
^^ well said... if you really like what you do i.e. the more passionate you are about your job, the lesser time you'll have for other things.
Thanks people for your feedback. I had considered teaching at one point but like UT said its not just being in class and teaching its a lot more than that.
Mal1k you're right no pain no gain but theres gotta be an exception somewhere :-) I'm not looking for alot of pay, just something that gets life by you know.
How about any business owners in the house? Like if any of you who own a coffee shop or a convenience store or something. I was surfing the web and vending machines seems to be a good business idea so far. Anybody with experience/horror stories regarding small businesses?
What nobody here ever run a family business?
Being a landlord, honestly...after picking up my family's history & recollecting olden days thru "qissays" from aunts & uncles, I believe that being a landlord, u had da most time with ur family & friends alike.
But da biggest negative aspect in this business it is that it brings a lot of corruption in da mind & soul. Lavish lifstyle becomes a norm, u start considering urself a caste, & there are lots of feuds.
I would say that u & ur wife, just go out, Xplore da world, visit every country in this world, in a year, & make it happen...just be free, from all of this daily crap that we have to take from our colleagues or managers...!
Umar used to teach?
I do teach... I'm a University Lecturer by profession - been teaching for 5+ years now at Community College and University levels.
Why're you surprised?
coz she teaches lil tots & tells them ur shooooooooooooo cute...
^^ aah well... a teacher's a teacher... no matter what level... its the sense of achievement that binds us all.

hmmm... I dunno what to make of that comment :) khair, sure - ask away, what would you like to know.
Wow, MQ and UT are teachers/professors?
It’s funny, I assumed most of you guys were still in college ![]()
I don’t look forward to the idea of having a traditional 9-5 job, but I know I need to have something practical. I’m majoring in studio art and English right now, and I’m wondering what I can do with those degrees. Medicine and finance aren’t an option for me.
Vat to doooo ![]()
