Hey guys I am facing couple of problem with my laptop..any help will be appreciated.
1) There is a blue vertical line on my laptop screen..which just wont go.
2) Whenever i try to open anything from administrative tools (control panel) eg computer managment or group policy..it either doesnot come up, if it comes it doesnot let me close it or it just stays there for couple of seconds and then disappears.
3) Same thing happens when i try to install any software (via usb or cd)…it just stays there for a bit and then the screen goes away…
I have reinstalled my computer, upgarded it to to a higher service pack but still no luck…
Finally are there any good antivirus programs which are free.
Blue vertical line can be due to display (screen/lcd) problem. If you can confirm that sometimes it goes away and then comes again?
& 3) Seems like your computer is infected with virus or malware. It can be that any service that starts right when you load your user login, that service is conflicting. It also can be due to registry corruption. Can you tell since when it started doing so? I mean for how long it is doing so?
i was gonna say that too, it looks like a trojan possibly?
blessed what type of antivirus software do you have installed? i’m pretty sure that the antivirus software is also something you can’t open right is that why you’re asking for free ones that you can install?
or are you saying you had absolutely no protection so far? windows thankfully has a firewall so that’s one protection you didn’t need to put in but plz let me know if you had any antivirus set up before all this happened.
i’m just wondering, when you said you’ve reinstalled, are you talking about your Operating system? which one do you have windows 7 or vista?
free antivirus that i can think of is AVG antivirus it has spyware detection too
also in terms of the blue vertical line that you were talking about, do you have a screensaver that turns on if you leave the laptop open and on unattended for too long? if not is it like that the whole day?
is the line there even before windows starts up or after?
Is the line part of the background or wallpaper and is it ‘always on
top’? Try changing these two around in Display Properties.
if you could possibly give a few more details about your laptop, it would be helpful.
If this stripe is ‘hiding’ what should be displayed,then the problem also might be with the wiring that controls the screen but we’ll only know after you give some more details about your problem
the blue line is there for parmanent. whatever i do watch videos etc it just stays there
its been like two months now…i reinstalled windows xp too…restored my computer to its original settings too…everythign else is working fine though…thanks
i have symentac antivuirs and firewall…the firewall is working fine…the antivirus wasnot working before but yesterday it started working. symantec antivirus came with the laptop it was pre installed…to be very honest i never used it before (it used to be in the off mode) since windows own protection was doing the work…thanks
blessed, what about all your files/ important data on your laptop. did you copy over all the important files you had on your laptop before reinstalling windows xp again? hope you backed up b4 doing any of that…
also since your antivirus software is working again, i want you to please definitely turn it to the on mode now and update virus definitions/security updates, after that please do a full scan of your laptop hard disk,usb drives if you already have not done it. i hope it checks for spyware, adaware, trojans…can you check if the version you have does this or not please.

^Could be? I’m pretty sure it is. Now If it was only one or two pixels I would have advised to try out to massage the dead pixels back to life, but in this case it’s a whole vertical line of dead pixels. In such cases only replacing the display panel helps…or just getting used to it.
yes i have when ever i have restored my pc to its original state or reinstalled windows…i have always placed important files on usb (so they can be tranferred later on)
yes its in on mode now…i will run a full scan and will let you know what it did.

so when you try to install software it still just stays for a second and then goes away right or did that stop after reinstalling win xp sp 2?
in terms of the vertical blue line, has the warranty on your laptop expired already?

keep an eye on the blue line while move it to 45° or to 145°. While moving if the line flickers or you see line vanished then its the cable that connects your display to your graphic card. If it remains same then its the screen of your laptop, it should be replaced.
Can you type down the name and the model of laptop? (written normally on a slab located at the base of the laptop)

i thought you still had the problem with the programs not opening even after reinstalling b/c you said the bold part. if that’s not the case sorry i misunderstood.
np nisha. no i never updated the antivirus. i am gonna scan the system with whatever version of my current antiv is (it wasnot opening so i will have to try the scan later on).
hmmm i have no idea about the warranty coz i got this laptop via someone else…i think it has coz its been 4yrs for this computer. and i got it in pakistan and i am in uk at the moment…jis admi ne diya tha woh tou pata nahi kahan hoga.

which applications are working for you…or are none of them opening up and working.
is your web browser opening up fine for you, how are you logging into GS or are you using a different computer to do that? if that works fine then i was thinking maybe you could use an online antivirus scanner.
Aaho, if the web browser is loading up fine for her, then have you ever tried the ESET online antivirus scanner? i wonder if she can scan her HD, usb drives using that, all she would do is download it she wouldn’t need to install any antivirus software.
the one time i used it, it worked great.
ESET is pretty well known.
hopefully the firewall is still up and working.
edit:i didn’t see the part where you said the laptop’s with your atm? what’s that? anyways, whoever is looking at it for you will hopefully be able to fix this problem

Well first mend the gender.. its he not she and further more you have suggested fine options for the point where he has said that he is unable to open any software and co.
about your last surprise.. he said that laptop is not with him at the moment. He also haven’t wrote it clearly but use some brain… women and brain two opposite things
@blessed. Do you have done partition of your hard disk? if yes can you format both, if you dont have any specific data on both partitions to save or can you move your back up data on other computer? If yes then move out your data and break the partition and create again. Format the first partition normal and install windows. It should be working fine then.
If you do not want to format other partition then format the first partition normaly (windows xp / windows 2000) (it will take time depending upon the size of partition) and not quick format.
After doing normal format install windows as usual. After installing windows, do not open the partition disk. Download an antivirus from internet AVG or Avira or Avast free version and install it and run a full scan on 2nd partition. Check if it catches some funny things. I sure it will be.
Also download malwarebyte antimalware and run full scan.
The reason I am saying about 2nd partition is that sometimes when you install windows then many of us open the 2nd partition without having antivirus installed. As we have only formatted first partition and have installed windows. It happens that by opening the other partition some “touch me not” virus who take support of autorun.ini files or many others who can infect other file when accessed, comes in action and infect your newly installed windows.
So better to download antivirus from internet and install it on computer and run full scan on other partition(s)
I asked you whether you’ve used ESET online scanner b/c i only used it the one time and that too with my normal AV software running. i’ve never been in blessed position where the AV wasn’t working at all or she couldn’t get any AV software to work. so i was asking your opinion of ESET AV online scanner.
she said “right not got my laptop with me atm but will get the details.” i know it’s a typo, it was difficult for me to understand what she wrote. from that i thought she meant she didn’t have it at the moment and it was written to you so i was only looking at the bits she addressed to me before i saw what she had written to you, then i made the edit statement.
