Returned from Pakistan recently, grabbed their business card, but wasn’t able to get a good look at their collection. Mind you they have two stores on Tariq Rd. (this one is 1 level), there is another one which has a huge bridal collection downstairs.
Ok lets say not everyone is sitting behind screens or going to catwalk shows to see each and every designer piece, so unless u are going around bragging and bragging, would the ordinary ppl even know u are wearing a designer piece and (what defines a designer piece ??)
why not go with something that looks good on u and ppl praise without knowing if there is a label behind it or not.

Totally. I have no idea whats the deal with omg! desiiiigner!! buy buy buy anyway. People should stick to whats looks good regardless of the price tag/label. Needless to say some designers are so tacky that most probably the elite just want to show they can afford throwing money on their monstrosities. :S
As far as i can jugde, the prices in pakistan are so high because most of overseas pakistanis. They don't buy the product but the price or designer name. They think that buying a dress from Karma or Maria B. is an achievement. I have heard and seen this so many times and it annoys me a lot.
Some months ago one of my friends told me, she bought a dress from Karma for her sisters wedding and it did cost 50.000 PKR. When i tried to explain her, that she had spend too much money for a piece of cloth, she tried to defend the price by saying, but you can't expect something cheaper it's from a designer.
10 years before designers were not available at every corner but still people had worn good clothes. Even today there are thousands of shops in Pakistan where you can get very pretty quality dresses, without ruining your financial situation. But the point is, we don't want to spend less money, as we think a product is just good if it was expensive.
Prices are high not just because of overseas pakistanis, there is actually a lot of wealth within pakistan too. People are willing to spend that much money. I've seen women at Sana Safinaz getting 3-4 suits at a time that cost around an average of 50,000 each.
You could probably get just as nice stuff made yourself but only if you have the time and energy to go get cloth, get it dyed, get embellishments, get embroidery done, get it stitched, shout at the tailor for doing it all wrong arghhhhh. Getting a designer outfit removes all the hassle. Plus you know there's no risk. I've gone through so much effort with some formals outfits I've gotten made myself and the tailor has just effed them up and I've ended up wasting 18-20 k. It's very distressing.
Most of the people who I speak to in the US are shocked at the prices and spending in wedding shopping in Pak. I think they spend for two reasons:
1. Spend some money on a trusted person who will be reliable when dealing with overseas folks.
2. Spend more because they don't realize there is any other option.
please get them to visit the smaller boutiques or rather get a picture of what you want and get someone to get it copied for you.
this is insane, 1 lakh for a wedding dress is understandable and a super bargain.
calling a sister's dress a super bargain at 1 lakh, well I'm sorry that is crazy.
the asking price for a non bridal formal which I was fine with my MOM to wear at HSY was 80,000. This is the ASKING price. Can be bargained. so how in the WORLD is 1 lakh a super bargain? what designer has your aunt gone to??????
hey so i mentioned my outfit from mohsin's that def. fit for the bride's sister to wear (or so i think) and was a normal price 200-250 but I'm not comfortable sharing the picture on here. I would hate to see designers knock off a dress that I own, and let's face it there are a lot of people that steal pictures on here. So to the girls that may consider pm-ing me this offer was only for the thread starter...sorry and I hope you can understand my reasoning. If you have family in karachi you should ask them to go on by and check the stuff there and I bought a decent valima outfit from Rizwan Moazzam in dolmen mall for the same price. But it wasn't nearly as nice and heavy at the Mohsin's outfit so that's where i would go if I were yall.
Er...could be. I can't remember now. It's either Islamabad or Rawalpindi for sure, I only say Islamabad because that's where she's from. Could be either!
Occasions on Zamzamma in Karachi had really pretty ready-to-stitch formals. I got a really pretty panelled shirt/anarkali style from there for 20K, including the jamevar silk for the churidaar.
^I got my wedding lehnga from Mohsins and Sons for Rs.20,000 in 2007!
There are two shops, one of them is in moti bazar (where we mostly go- my family has been buying bridal, formal outfits from there since early 90s) and another on Murree road (prices are a bit high on murree road)!
