Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant****Updated at : Monday, February 11, 2008

KARACHI: President Pervez Musharraf inaugurated the desalination plant constructed under the management of Defence Houseing Authority here on Monday.

The plant is planned to daily provide three million gallons of drinking water and 94 Mega Watts of electricity as well as power supply to the area will be channelised through main grid of KESC.

Clifton Cantonment Board will supply water to the residents of DHA through a specially laid down water pipeline system. Thus, water shortage and power crisis facing the Defence area would be brought under control to a great extent.

This is the first ever desalination plant equipped with the latest technology in the country’s history. The DHA Desalination Project is situated in Defence Phase-VIII on eight to ten acre of coastal area. The project has been completed in three years with foreign investment of $120 million.

a nice thing to see,s tep in right direction, we need at least half a dozen more like these along the coastal line..

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

Good to hear of the desalination plant :k:, can anybody shed light on 94MW of electricity, is it part of same plant? How are they generating that?

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

^Perhaps through windmills like in Dubai. But is that water is drinkable? I think as in SA it can only be used for washing/cleaning purposes.

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

^ I believe water from desalination plant is "drinkable" but considering our water-lines maintenance I would "boil" the water if I were there :D

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

:omg: :omg:

And I wonder why they did that. Yup, go figure. This is a breaking news to me too. :hehe:

Good News but why all of this now?

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

ehtasab,
I doubt it. Perhaps Mr. Salim can provide 100 pages justification that this water can be drinkable:D

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

What? Can someone explain to me whether this drinking water is going to be available outside the DHA area in Karachi - like in other neighborhoods in Karachi?

DHA is filled with upper class families. Not that I have a problem with ritzy money, but if they spent so much money just to make life better for the rich, HOW is this going to help anyone else?

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

The news seems to befool the people. From where 94 Mega watts electricity be obtained? What type of desalination plant will be this? Whether it will be Reverse Osmosis (RO) or Distillation plant? More over this project will need lots of electrical/thermal energy to run. It has not been mentioned from where it will be comming from? Looks like a political stunt nothing else!

Here is the google search, I can not provide the link as program does not allow me to do so.

*Desalination Plants Worldwide *

Of the more than 7,500 desalination plants in operation worldwide, 60% are located in the Middle East. The world's largest plant in Saudi Arabia produces 128 MGD of desalted water. In contrast, 12% of the world's capacity is produced in the Americas, with most of the plants located in the Caribbean and Florida. To date, only a limited number of desalination plants have been built along the California coast, primarily because the cost of desalination is generally higher than the costs of other water supply alternatives available in California (e.g., water transfers and groundwater pumping). However, as drought conditions occur and concern over water availability increases, desalination projects are being proposed at numerous locations in the state.

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

^ who is worried about "cost"? We are talking about DHA residence here :)

BTW, on DHA website they showed that the plant is getting gas from SNG (I think) to be used for power generation (excess is to be resdistributed as "94MW").

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

The plant was put in place by "DHA" themselves, not the city of Karachi administration/govt, hence the primary beneficiary. However, from what I gather there are other plants being installed as well. Once DHA gets water and electricity it will reduce load on rest of city, IMO.

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

not to mention aid the development of a rapidly growing area of Karachi.

yes its upper class, but upper class folk drink water too.

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

I agree they should have the privelege to quench their thirst, but since when did clean drinking water become something for the stuck-up aunties in DHA to boast about?

"Hai, dekho hamare paas kitna paisa hai. We can drink water without spewing bloody diarrhea out of our rear ends."

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

Its not about spewing water from behind, rather getting water for its residents. If no one gets ANY water due to water shortage in lakes what would one do? Wash their behind with sea water?

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

I'm not saying that either. I'm saying that this is the city and country's responsibility to make sure that EVERYONE gets access to clean water.

The fact that the rich are getting it is not acceptable in my book. Its water. Its not gold.

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

DHA is a separate unit (from Karachi admin I believe), and they are providing water to its residents. Whats wrong?

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

DHA is within Karachi boundaries, no? Are you telling me its a separate city? City administration of Karachi oversees everything that goes on within the boundaries of Karachi. Seriously. How much more simpler does this have to get? All citizens in Karachi need clean water. The fact that Musharraf has invested SOOOO much money into some plant that benefits only the posh areas of the city is simply foolish and if Pakistanis don't find a problem with this, then my good sir, let me make you aware, that THIS IGNORANCE is why Pakistan is where it is. No need to go around blaming anyone except yourselves.

Elitism. So surprising where you see it rear its head sometimes.

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

DHA is not under city government. Actually, Karachi has many so-called areas that are not under city government, even though they get many services from city government. Availability of water to DHA was very bad and what I know, many living in DHA buy water using tankers.

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

Its a private plant PCG, foreign investment. Nothing Musharraf invested personally or through his government. It isnt any more elitist than choosing to make Park Towers at Clifton instead of Orangi Town. Yes, unsurprisingly, people invest capital in places they expect to recover it.

Whether or not Karachi should have water shortages is a moot point. It does. DHA and Clifton are badly hit. Our area wasnt even connected to the water lines until last month, yes pipes running through the homes connected to exactly nothing (with still a bill to pay for). It makes sense that people who can AFFORD to do something about it, DO something about it instead of waiting around for the govt to act.

Incidentally while DHA was living without water from Karachi Water Board, it wasnt as if people werent drinking water. They were purchasing water, from private contractors, that deliver tankers of water. Whats the difference between that and a private desalination plant operated by the DHA board?

Re: President Musharraf inaugurates DHA Desalination Plant - Geo News‏

http://www.dhakarachi.org/management.asp

" A **serving Brigadier **heads the organization and is designated as the Administrator. The Administrator is the Chief Executive of the Authority and exercises all executive powers delegated or otherwise in accordance with the policy laid down by the Governing Body and decisions of the Executive Board."

It might be “within” Karachi and what not, but it is a “cantonment” sort of area which is under army control, not “civilian”. They have their own budget I believe. City Nazim Naimatullah doesn’t have any say in what DHA does with its money.

Now the discussion of eltism, army control of lands in Pakistan is a separate topic altogether. Should we have “elitism”? No! Should we have army’s city inside city? No. I do disagree on many issues. What I appreciated is the fact that atleast DHA administration is doing something for their residents, may Karachi Nazim should look into that and get something for people of his city.
