Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

Re: Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

Isn't it ironic? There's a presidential election in India - a post considered a figurehead yet by all accounts there is publuc support for current guy to continue but 2 other people have been proposed and they're trying to make a party of it,Musharaf may want to take a lesson from this.once for once itd be interesting to see a Pakistan president(?) Retire voluntarily.

Re: Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

What is a lesson for Musharraf? In India President is decided by elected members and not by ordinary people. So even though Kalam has support, unless he is proposed and elected by elected members, he cannot be president.

Rajendra Prasad, first President of India did have two terms.

Musharraf on the other hand has majority support from people, as per last elections, so why should he resign.

Re: Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

^ hein? Where you live man? Bet far away from Pakistan for sure, where even internet don't reach! Musharaf used to have people support but after latest bunglings nomore. Everyone in Pakistan is only wondering about how he will go, not whether he will go or not. And how soon.Lesson I meant was why he not just have two or three other people compete and just leave when one of them wins. That will look like democrazy and bloodshed will be averted, faces saved

Re: Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

If he is sure to win then not, otherwise he will decline...
Depends how much support he will get.

Re: Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

I care... The reason is that I don't like it when the politics becomes so dirty that even a good man like him, who has support of almost all Indians is sacrificed for Politics.
I hope he gets the 2nd term and then my belief in democracy will become stronger.

Re: Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

That's not the question. Musharraf got 99.8% of the votes in the last election. Until next election is held he should continue.

Let's say Indians do not want Manmohan Singh government right now, he shouldnt resign, he should complete his term and his fate would be decided in the next election.

Re: Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

Kalam is making a fool of himself by agreeing to consider a second term.

HIGH OFFICE

What A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is doing to his own dignity is his own business. But by saying that he will run for a second term provided there was “certainty” of his winning, he is also demeaning the office he occupies. The least that he owes to the people of India is to depart without making himself look ridiculous. What is sad is that certain vested interests are leading him on, and he, it seems, is none the wiser. The Congress has already announced its own candidate for the post of president. The Bharatiya Janata Party has also decided that it will support the present vice-president, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, as the presidential candidate. Mr Shekhawat will have the backing of the National Democratic Alliance. But the BJP cannot ensure that all those who are opposed to the Congress will support Mr Shekhawat. Even within the sangh parivar, the Shiv Sena has come out in support of Pratibha Patil, who it sees as the first person from Maharashtra to become the head of State. To the Shiv Sena, its Marathi identity is much more important than its loyalty to Hindutva. Even within the BJP, there are rumblings of dissent regarding Mr Shekhawat’s candidacy.

The Third Front’s position is much worse since it finds itself in a quandary. It cannot support a BJP-sponsored candidate. Nor can it vote for Ms Patil, whose name has been put forward by the Congress. It is thus lobbying Mr Kalam to run the presidential race a second time. The Left parties did not support Mr Kalam the first time round so the question of their supporting him now does not arise. This leaves the Third Front on no-man’s- land. To give that land some identity and sense of belonging, it is trying to get Mr Kalam to be its candidate. Mr Kalam seems to be a reluctant starter. He would like another stint in the house on Raisina Hill but is too coy to come out and say it openly. Hence the provisions: first about consensus and then about certainty. The change in terms is something of a quibble since a consensus will make it a certainty. Mr Kalam must realize that as the president of India, he cannot stoop to bargaining. If he wanted a second term, he should have announced his willingness a long time ago. The office of the president, as it was originally visualized by the founding fathers, was seen to be above the shoddiness of politics. That original image is taking a beating, although not for the first time.

Bilkul sahi farmaaya.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is 100 times better than all other charlies. He deserves a second term.

Pratibha seems to be suffering from foot in the mouth disease. She can't differentiate between purdah and veil.

Re: Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

i think Im catching onto the trend here. token figurehead position where someone from a talking-point segment of society is propped up.

Re: Pratibha Patil - First Women President of India

The election of a woman to the largely ceremonial post continues an Indian tradition using the presidency to bolster disadvantaged communities.

Hindu-majority India has had three Muslim presidents, including incumbent A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, since winning independence from Britain in 1947. It has also had a president from the minority Sikh community, and Kalam’s predecessor, K. R. Narayanan, came from the bottom of the society’s complex social hierarchy.

Jalgaon On Top Of The World As Pratibha Tai Wins

Saturday 21st of July 2007 People dancing in gay abandon in streets to rapturous sounds of drum beats, trumpets and fire-crackers - Jalgaon city in Maharashtra erupted in celebrations as the news of Pratibha Patil’s victory in the presidential poll reached her home town Saturday afternoon.

This small but wealthy city in Khandesh region, with a population of about 400,000, had its first flush of joy a little over a month ago when the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) announced the candidature of Patil, whose family is based here, for India’s presidency.

It was on the top of the world Saturday as it became official she would be the country’s first woman president.

‘We are happy as never before - Pratibha tai (elder sister) held several high offices and never lost an election in the 45 years of her political career, but today is special for us; our joy is boundless,’ her younger brother G.N. Patil said.

‘Hordes of festively dressed women have been out on the streets since morning drawing large, colourful rangolis all over the city, statues of great men in the city have been bedecked with garlands and huge cut-outs of Pratibha Tai have been put up at all vantage points,’ G.N. Patil told IANS.

His son Uday added: ‘We are happy not only because atya (father’s elder sister in Marathi) has made it to the country’s highest office but also because she is the country’s first woman and the first one from Maharashtra to do so.’

Jalgaon Municipal Corporation’s Mahanagar Vikas Aghadi chief Narendra Patil, district Congress chief Ulhas Sable and the party’s city unit chief Sanjay Garude expressed similar sentiments.

For the city’s Raosaheb Rupchand Vidyalaya, popularly known as R.R. Shala, it was a proud day as Patil was a student there from 1945 to 1951.

‘Pratibha tai was an ideal student who showed rare skills in organising cultural events,’ principal Vijay Pathak told IANS, adding that English and Sanskrit were her favourite subjects.

The whole school and its premises, particularly Patil’s classroom, were tastefully decorated with festoons and rangoli designs and students expressed their joy by bursting crackers.

‘All 3,000 students of the school had sent Pratibha Tai their best wishes when her candidature was announced and we are going to invite her to the alma mater,’ he added.

Apart from the residences of Patil and her brother, the city unit offices of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party also had celebrations as her supporters distributed sweets.
