Gone is talk of how Musharraf can’t get re-elected from these assemblies, as more and more want to join in the Presidential race now. That gives more legitimacy to the process which is just what Musharraf wanted.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has decided to field Makhdoom Amin Fahim as its candidate for the presidential election to challenge President General Pervez Musharraf. According to party sources, the decision was taken a few days back in Dubai during a meeting of the top leadership of the party with Chairperson Benazir Bhutto in the chair. Sources said the issue was also discussed during the joint meeting of the Central Executive Committee and the Federal Council of the PPP in London last month. However, at that time the party had left the option open to Benazir Bhutto to nominate any one from the party to challenge President Musharraf during the presidential election.
Sources said the PPP is likely to obtain nomination papers for the party candidate by Wednesday and submit them to the EC on Thursday. PPP sources, however, told The News that a formal announcement regarding the nomination of Makhdoom Amin Fahim would be made by Wednesday. The sources said the PPP did not announce resignations from the assemblies to challenge President Musharraf’s candidature and give a surprise to the nation. The announcement of the Supreme Court Bar Association to put up Justice (retd) Wajihuddin Ahmad as its candidate suggested that the two candidates would pose a challenge to President Musharraf. Fahim, who just returned from Dubai after holding a meeting with Benazir, will start consultations with the party leadership to take them into confidence about the decision of party chairperson.

Faryal Talpur, sister of former senator and spouse of PPP chairwoman Benzair Bhutto on Monday obtained nomination papers. The PPP is opposed to President Musharraf’s re-election while he continues to hold the position of chief of army staff and has announced it will challenge Musharraf’s candidature. Babar had also announced the PPP might resign from the assemblies in case the president announced his nomination.

Zardari's sister has only obtained nomination papers at this stage like scores of other people, but it is unlikely the PPP would be so stupid as to put forward her as their candidate. More likely the PPP will put forward Makhdoom Fahim as their Presidential candidate.
At this rate, I doubt the holy fathers of the MMA will be want to left out, and will probably nominate their own guy for the slot. Fazlur Rehman or Qazi Hussain for President? :D

If Makhdoom sahab files his papers, this will be his another sacrifice for the party ... he will only be the escape goat.
By this way PPP will be able to not-resign and at the same time tell awam that they did no do any deal with musharraf and in fact they are the real opposition :)

This means if BB for any reason can not become a candidate for PM Amin Faheem is also out as PM candidate.
Who will be PM candidate from PPP in that case. Aitzaz may be ????
He is keeping quite now a days not playing opposition opposition so fiercely, is it something to do with his possibility to become PM.
I think it will be good for PPP election campaign if they field a PM candidate from Punjab...

Bhutto's party says it will contest Pakistan presidential vote IF Musharraf disqualified.
My feeling is that the SC may conditionally disqualify Mushrraf. In other words, the court might say he cannot run for election in vardi, but if he takes off the vardi he can.

I agree, and/or there maybe semantics over the timing of taking off his wardi. i.e. take it off just before the actual polling begins on the day, or straight after the result is announced.

PESHAWAR: Peoples Party has provided justification to presidential election by its announcement to run a candidate, MMA leader Qazi Hussain Ahmed here said. Talking to Geo News in Peshawar on Wednesday Qazi Hussain said fielding a presidential candidate is the part of a secret deal between Peoples Party and the government. He said the PPP had earlier announced that it would resign from assemblies if the president contested the election but now they are going back from their commitment. He said according to the APDM decision, MMA would resign from the national and provincial assemblies. Qazi Hussain said the MMA senators would propose and second the lawyers’ presidential candidate Justice (R ) Wajeehuddin. He said MMA is supporting him because fielding him as candidate is intended to fight a legal battle.
He said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman will present his point of view about quitting the assemblies in a meeting of APDM, after which MMA will follow the decision that will be taken by the APDM.

Makhdoom Ameen Faheem is the proverbial lamb of People's Party. Any election that PPP is guaranteed to lose, they nominate him to run for that position. Poor guy. When will he be nominated for an election that he can actually win?
For PPP to take part in Presidential election is all part of the deal. Mushy needs legitimacy for his re-election. Expect SC to rule in Mushy's favor too. The other opposition parties have a better chance of success if they all attempt collective suicide than to stop Mushy. Historically in Pakistani politics, there is always a Winner and there is a Nobody. Opposition is just a Nobody. No one cares for what opposition wants.

Looks like top Lawyers like Munir, Aeitazaz Ehsan etc have done a deal with Mush too and they want to give legitimacy to elections as they have nominated their candidate for the election :)

Not sure which Munir you are talking about. Munir A Malik is the Attorney General of Pakistan. I am almost positive he has done a deal with the government.

Get your facts straight. Munir A Malik is NOT the attorney General of Pakistan, Malik QAYYUM is.
Munir A Malik, Eitezaz Ehsan, Justice Tariq, Ali Ahmed Kard and other blongs to the same gang of lawyers which as nominated JUSTICE WAJEEHUDDIN as their Candidate for Presidential Elections....

Sorry about the confusion. Malik Qayyum and Munir... ah well, both appear like perfect douchbags anyway.
Regarding retired judge sahab... it remains to be seen what is his standing. Someone nominated by a major political party (with actual presence in national and provincial assemblies and Senate) is invariably a viable Presidential candidate compared to any Tom, Dick or Harry nominated by a gang of lawyers. PPP or MQM or even MMA nominating someone gives the election instant credibility as opposed to someone on the streets nominating someone else.
