PPP - PML-N divorce (threads merged)

This divorce may see other parties like the MQM, ANP, JUI and even PML Q benefit at the expense of Nawaz Sharif.

PPP ready for PML-N divorce, plans to reward others

Sunday, August 24, 2008

ISLAMABAD: As soon as the PML-N quits the coalition, three junior partners of the PPP, including Fata, the JUI and the ANP, will get a larger share in the federal cabinet while the fourth, the MQM, will join shortly after the presidential election.

The PPP will also significantly increase its representation in the cabinet.

A source told The News that the cabinet expansion would take place after the presidential election and the pronouncement of divorce between the PML-N and the PPP, which was now written on the wall.

He said that since PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari was very pleased with the uninhibited support of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to his candidature for the presidency and its stand on the question of the restoration of the deposed judges, it would be given a greater share in the federal cabinet.

MQM chief Altaf Hussain publicly recommended that Zardari should be the next president of Pakistan. The MQM has also announced that it would oppose the resolution on the judges’ restoration in the National Assembly.

All this came as music to Zardari’s ears, and he openly thanked Altaf Hussain for the support to his bid to be the president.

The source said that the Awami National Party (ANP) of Asfandyar Wali, which has 13 seats in the National Assembly and a few senators, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) of Maulana Fazlur Rehman which has five MNAs and over a dozen senators, and members of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) would get a larger representation in the cabinet.

According to the source, a couple of defectors from the PML-Q may also be inducted into the cabinet for deserting their party and supporting the government. He said Zardari had made up his mind that the ruling coalition would consist of only the PPP, the MQM, the ANP, the JUI and the tribal areas MPs.

The PPP co-chairman feels that all these parties form a comfortable majority in both the houses of parliament for his election as the president as well as for future legislation. Zardari, the source said, is of the view that such a coalition would last long as every element would have a vital stake in the government. All these alliance partners absolutely share Zardari’s opinion on the next president and the judges’ issue, he said, adding that was why the PPP co-chairman feels that there would be a remarkable harmony in the government.

At present, the ANP has two federal ministries while the JUI and Fata have one portfolio each. The JUI’s contention is that since it has a sizable numerical strength in the Senate, it should be proportionately given representation in the cabinet. Apart from these coalition partners, the source said, the PPP would induct a large number of its MPs into the cabinet. All the ministries lying vacant because of the PML-N nominees’ resignations would now be filled up.

Re: PPP ready for PML-N divorce, plans to reward others.

This was predicted by many, including me, in the days leading up to Mushy's resignation. In fact, its probably not a bad thing. PPP and PML(N) are unnatural allies, and the only thing keeping them together was their dislike for Mushy. Every government needs a vibrant opposition. PML(Q) does not fit the profile at all. PML(N) should get on the opposition benches. Small religious and regional parties (JUI, MQM etc) should band together with PPP to form the federal government.

Now, that is the easy part.

The tough part is to expect these parties to perform their roles well. For that to happen, PPP needs to run an effective and inspired government, while PML(N) should perform the role of a vigilant opposition. They need to give this govt a chance of 2-4 years (at least).

Problem is we are an impatient nation. Our politicial leaders are also very impatient. PPP folks will want to make as much money as quickly as they can. PML(N) folks would want to keep semi-chaos going all the time to make sure the govt remains destabilized and new elections are called quickly. If our political leaders don't learn the lessons of 90's this time too, then again, they will hear the sounds of military boots. For the sake of our country, we all hope it doesn't come to that.

For practical purposes, the sooner PPP and PML(N) divorce and political realignment is made the better. The sooner the judges issue is resolved/goes away, the better, so that government can focus on governance. We all should want a stable political system from this point on. Whether Zardari becomes the President or someone else, in the long run, really doesn't matter. If Zardari is the Prez and Gilani is PM, 58-2-B is meaningless. For the sake of country, indirectly-elected President should just be a ceremonial figure head, and the real powers should lie with the directly elected PM and the cabinet.

hey hey hey, Faisal so the whoel sceanrio of mullahs gone wild is going to happen soon, PML-N and JI/JUI etc. we will see the superman wanna be's holding hands and raising them to try and fly, (or is it collective audiotioning for deodorant ads, sure sure sure unsure unsure unsure)

I am most interested in seeing where certain politicians who are rather quiet these days end up over the enxt few months.

JUI is backing Great Zardari.

and what about JI and friends?

Re: PPP ready for PML-N divorce, plans to reward others.

JI has 0 seats in the parliaments, and they aren't really supporting PML[N]. And by the way, PML[N] isnt a Mollah party. I dont even remember any of their leaders having big dharriz.

Re: PPP ready for PML-N divorce, plans to reward others.

JUI finds it hard to keep coalition with PPP: Fazal

JUI is considering “Khull’a”:chai:

Re: PPP ready for PML-N divorce, plans to reward others.

Good job on destroying the Bhutto "legacy" and handing PML (N) the next election.

All it requires is a little diesel, and the JUI-PPP coalition will be intact. Just now, the MQM snakes have decided they will join the Federal Cabinet.

It’s all about personal gains Spocky.. the sooner we realise it the quicker we can get rid of these crooks. :chai:

Re: PPP ready for PML-N divorce, plans to reward others.

Actually the JI has a few senators in the senate, they have formed an APDM group, it's likely to support PML-N's candidate. The JUI will lose it's senators come feb next year so it's trying to maximise it's gains as always before that..

We are simply seeing a reversion to Pakistan's normal two party system, which has been accelerated by outside interference.

^ Question is not federal govt (where PPP will retain govt with the help of ANP, JUI and MQM). Real question is what will happen in Punjab.

righty now they have zero seats in the parliament, but it does not stop them from talking politics and throwing their weight behind someone.

well not really a mollah party, but def more right wing compared to PPP I think. Nawaz has alleged to be supported by OBL in the 90s per a previous story that I posted. and then we can not forget his stunt of trying to declare himself ameer ul monineen or something like that. This is not surprising considering he is the political child of the biggest right winger in our recent political leadership in any position of authority i.e. General Zia.

In a Punjab context i think it's win win for PML-N , the PPP lacks a real provincial leader to challenge Shahbaz (a problem they've had for a good 20 years) and the only way for them to win over the provincial govt would be either a dismissal or large scale buying of MPA's (Watoo is ready and willing to do that). Either way the PML-N wins, if it stays it has a pro active leader who will win votes with his development record, it doesn't have to take the responsibility for the economy and it becomes the victim if it's ousted from the provincial govt + the PML-Q mpas are naturally more inclined to PML-N .

the question is if the economy can survive the present mess and the spill over from NWFP spills over even more..

Can we see proof into all that? It was actually the ISI who was supporting Nawaz Sharif, both times he came to power.

Not really, he flourished during Zia's times, but he has always been very critical of Zia, just like hes been critical of Musharraf. You wanna know whose the real political child of Zia, its Altaf Hussain! He was brought into tackle the PPP.

proof about the ameer ul momineen part? been posted before
proof about his metings with OBL- it is in the thread about kaleem khawaja for whatever its worth.

challo so Nawaz is a creation of ISI, an entity you have been vocal against so I suppose u need to be against nawaz too now.

So you are saying he was not the general's prodigy? :)

its rather amusing that now PPP and MQM are partners. I suppose that means that partnering with a terrorist party makes PPP equally their partners in crime.

you know what is more amusing than MQM and PPP partnership? MQM and ANP in the same “coalition”. :chai:
