I think its the end of the PPP. Those that hated the PPP and were afraid of its popularity are finally free to do whatever they want now. Without Benazir, there is no PPP and never will be.

Hey there spock. We meet again. I wouln't jump to such conclusions. After this, PPP has a martyr, it's past sins may yet be washed. And the party structure may become more democratic instead becoming a personality cult...a first in Pakistan. Aitzaz Ahsan has been brutalized again...but he is alive. And he has been righteous atleast since his name became a byword in Pakistan politics.

I think that even the PPP deserves more credit than that. In fact, I hope the PPP survives and thrives and breaks free of the personality-based politics of its past.
Why can there not be a PPP without a Bhutto at the helm? There must be competent leadership somewhere in the party that could not flourish in the past under the shadows of a Bhutto but which can shine now.
PPP was the brainchild of the Bhuttos. It still had some good and sincere leaders, but on the grass roots the party is nothing, and is corrupt. The thing that united them was ZAB and Benazir, and with those two gone forever, it cant ever be the same political face ever again. Musharraf always wanted a PPP without BB, now he finally has one, and he can pull all the strings now.

Again, I think that you are not giving the PPP enough credit. The PPP has to survive, if only to show that pakistani political parties can endure without being more about their personality than their policies.
PPP is in deep trouble as far as leadership is concerned. Fatima/Ghinva Bhutto have a parralel party without big names. But Zardari clan will have the same sympathy card in their hands as Murtaza family had.
Zardari will not be acceptable as leader by majority of the party and public.
Makhdoom Ameen Fahim might be a contender, but Aitezaz Ahsan has a real chance, if any.
Otherwise PPP will soon be disintegrated (in 2/3 years). Pakistan needs some strong ideology based party, where manifesto is considered before voting instead of worshiping leaders.

If you recall your post about the charisma of Altaf Hussain, werent you saying how the MQM gets all those votes from its supporters because of his charisma, and appeal? I can quote the same post here, replace Benazir by Altaf...
^^ LOL PPP is nothing on grass root levels. That's a joke of day. All the burning happening all over pakistan is coz of ppp jaialy. Ppp has far more die hard supporter then any other party. Ppp will be same and will have more support.

And that is a problem with the MQM and it's supporters. Policies don't matter to them - they vote only for the person.
Benazir did indeed have the same charisma as Altaf. But a feature of successful democracies is that their leaders lack charisma and change often. Voters vote for the policies and parties, not for people.
Don't forget party loyalty. How many jiyalas do you think will change their voter registration beause BB has been murdered? Infact I think those disenchanted PPP supporters who liked the party because of ZAB and his aspirations and were disappointed by BB may return to the party if a strong, dependable leadership emerges. BB marhoom was no legacy of ZAB only his name.

I don't believe Party Loyalty played enough of a role in pakistan in the past. We have Personality Loyalty instead, where voters and party members devote themselves to a strong individual instead.
Party loyalty, loyalty to the ideology of the party, would be a welcome addition to Pakistan's political landscape

Haan laken all Pakistani political parties are centered around personalities. PPP is associated with Bhutto name, same goes for MQM, JI PMLN, JUI, PTI and other parties. I'm sure with BB's death more people from Bhutto clan will come forward to take leadership position in party, and thats the only way PPP is going to survive.

I think you have a serious problem understanding things as it is apparent from your silly posts. I said PPP doesnt offer anything on the grass root levels, as in good leadership which can only nourish under a strong leader and in the absence of Benazir from Pakistan for 10+ years that was all gone. Now I never said it doesnt enjoy popularity, because unlike Musharraf and his lota league, they have support. Now if you view these jiyalaz burning tires and trucks as 'something good' than thats your matter of opinion.

I really hope the PPP survives and thrives without the Bhutto name. It's the only political party that now has the opportunity to make policies and not personalities count - it's the only party that has a chance at true democracy in Pakistan.

MAd Sc. I believe that's the case primarily beause political parties in Pakistan do not have primaries in which competing party leadership can hope to achieve party nomination thru intra party and national input. I think unless the party charter changes radically or if the party's face change is one which most find abhorrent (such as i Zardari becomes Chairman, I think no one really likes him) than people would continue to support that party. After all but for a few persons who support an ugly, murderer don of MQM, most partyvoters did change their loyalty. Only a few remain glued and lickspittles of the cult of ALtaf.

People also said the same thing when ZAB was killed and BB was not even in active politics at that time. Zia used all his forces to crush this party, he did not put even a dint in it and PPP survived. No matter who is at top, it will survive. Names of ZAB and BB are enough for its survival of the party like Congress of India is still there even after the deaths of Nehru, Indra Gandhi and Rajev Gandhi.
