Bhutto urges supporters to back anti-Musharraf protests

Benazir Bhutto flew to the Pakistani capital Islamabad today and vowed to keep pressure on General Pervez Musharraf after another day of protests by lawyers over the imposition of emergency rule.At the same time Imran Khan, the former Pakistan cricket captain and leader of an opposition party, was reported to have fled house arrest and gone into hiding.
His ex-wife Jemima Khan released a statement in which he said police ransacked his house and roughed up his family. He escaped before they returned to take him to jail, the statement said.

Until now, activists from Ms Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s party have been noticeably absent from the demonstrations. **It was widely thought that Ms Bhutto was anxious not to jeopardise a suspected future power sharing agreement with Gen Musharraf.**However, today she called on her supporters to back the anti-Musharraf rallies.
Speaking to Sky News after arriving in Islamabad she said: “Members of my party, and parliamentarians are going to protest outside of Parliament House, we are hoping to build pressure to get President Musharraf to retire and hold the election as scheduled.”
“We would also like to see the release of political prisoners.”
Ms Bhutto traveled to Islamabad to attend a meeting of the opposition Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy. She also insisted that she would not negotiate with Gen Musharraf.
Gen Musharraf held a meeting of his cabinet today. An unnamed minister told Associated Press that delaying the elections was discussed at the meeting.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s deposed chief justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, called on lawyers nationwide to carry on their demonstrations.
“Go to every corner of Pakistan and give the message that this is the time to sacrifice,” Mr Chaudhry, who is under virtual house arrest in Islamabad, told lawyers by mobile phone.
“Don’t be afraid. God will help us and the day will come when you’ll see the constitution supreme and no dictatorship for a long time.” A Musharraf loyalist has been sworn in to replace Mr Chaudhry.
Earlier, unrest broke out for a second day in the city of Multan, when hundreds of police prevented around 1,000 lawyers from leaving a district court complex to stage a street rally.
Both sides pelted each other with stones, and police swung batons to disperse the crowd.
An Associated Press reporter saw at least three lawyers who had been injured, with two of them bleeding from the head. At least three were arrested.
In a separate clash, police stormed Multan’s high court and arrested at least six lawyers.
Britain, the US and the UN have led international demands for Gen Musharraf to keep his earlier promises to restore the constitution, resign as the army chief and hold elections by January.
The Bush administration promised a review of US aid, which has totalled $11bn (£5.3bn) since 2001.
In Islamabad, confusion about the timing of elections continued. The attorney general, Malik Qayuum, and the president of Gen Musharraf’s party, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, yesterday said they would take place by mid-January as planned.
However, the prime minister, Shaukat Aziz, refused to commit to a date, saying only that polls would take place “as early as possible” and leaving open the possibility of a delay of up to a year.
Gen Musharraf wields vast power since he usurped the constitution on Saturday in a move that analysts likened to martial law.
Fundamental rights have been suspended, television stations censored and stringent media regulations introduced.
