In 1970 our population was 55 million, same as France. Today we are 180 million, in ten years we will cross 250 million with present population growth rate, while France’s population is at 53 million today.
Should we strictly enforce some policy like one family one child like China. Is there a way to stop population explosion. Educating masses to slow down the growth of population will take a long time, and probably we will become 350 million by that time. Is there anything we can do in the short term to solve this problem.
A few years ago we had some media campaigns encouraging people to practice family planning. Although they couldn’t achieve 100 percent objectives, but these measures created some awareness amongst the people.
Please post your opinion and suggest some possible measures to slow down this population growth. All our economic growth and progress is being negated by this population explosion..!!!
Some time ago, Hannibal opened a thread about Pakistan's biggest problem - I said ever-increasing population - so many here opposed me then. When we have educated people supporting this - how we can convince the uneducated masses in our country.
The population control was one of the good things started by the first PPP government in the 70's but I remember the moulvies opposed him furiously even they told people not to eat "paki pakai tazi roti".
I think putting the population to a better use could also prove helpful. We can utilize our manpower in a way that it becomes our competitive advantage.

Do you have a practical solution in the short term how this can be done?
Don't you think it's easier to utilize 180 million man power to our competitive advantage than 250 million..???
the unemployment is at its peak... people want to earn more and work less... govt. is not producing or planning any projects that will boost or even make employment opportunities for those unemployed... family planing ads and campaigns face objections from our religious sector and conservative families.. there is not equal check and balance on the needs and necessities of 180 million equally.. how can one utilize it equally?
One of the biggest problem in Pakistan. A law should be passed in the assemblies for two children per family. If someone violates that law make person ineffective make more children. Pakistan needs quality not quantity. Population should be conrolled at any cost. Too many people chasing too few resources available in Pakistan.
well bro! population is too big but resources are not few. but the actual thing is that unjustices are very high which must be eliminated so unemployment would also be eliminated, becoz if every politician would make his bank balances or swiss accounts, then you will definitly see injustices and unemployment all accross country. otherwise, equal distribution and chances of wealth and justice is the main solution,

Their is not even a possibility of talk for one-child or even think about stopping population growth because of all the halla-gullah by molvies. The common perception in Pakistan is "naya calendar aye na aye, naya kido zaroor ana chahyia" - In Pakistan most of the men take women as granted and think of them as sex-machine & baby-makers, that's all.
On top of that people have religious justification for more kids for ex. more muslims are coming on earth .. etc..etc.. etc.. what he hell.
Well 2025 we will be touching 250 million if the current pattern continue, just imagine how more our cities will be congested - even if you start planning today - the time already runs out. Now work for 2050 how to stop 250 million to turn into 500 million.

With the current 'explosive' development on all fronts (economic, technological, agricultural) I guess population explosion will need to be contained for 3-4 decades atleast.

yeah but then in 80s-90s their own leader who shouted 'bachay do hi achhay' but herself had 4 kids, who will follow such a leader?
Its not all bad dont forget that in the 80s and early 90s pakistans population was growing by over 3% per annum. Its less than 2% now and the fertility rates have also dropped in the last decade.
More industrialization and prosperity will lead to negative population growth... :)
It will take 100+ years of industrialization in a country like Pakistan to lead a negative population growth. In a short run it's perfectly feasible, just like China.

I think in order to have any meaningful success in controlling population growth we must have a nation wide extensive debate. Religious minded people should also be taken on board. After all Allah ordains us to use the intelligence given by Him.
This piece of land we call Pakistan simply does not have the resources to sustain 180 million/250million/or 500 million. We don't have water resources, agriculture resources, energy resources, education resources, health resources, housing resources to sustain such a huge population explosion. To give you an example already Pakistan has the most contaminated milk in the world. Firstly people are injecting harmones to enhance milk production to the animals. This is increasing infertility among the girls, as well as increasing deformed child births. In addition to this every sort of contamination like washing powder, hydrogen per oxide, vegetable fats, cow milk supplements, are added to the milk along with stale water which gives better solid contents. Similarly if you see what is being fed to the chicken, the highest protein source in Pakistan today, you will probably stop eating chicken in Pakistan. Every type of industrial waste is being added to the feed increasing cancer and all sort of ailments. If these are the affairs today imagine what will happen when population grows to 250 million and 500 million in a few decades..!!!
Some of the measures we can take very quickly are:
1) Increase the marriage age to 20 years. This should be strictly implemented. When young people will get married at minimum this age they will be more matured to plan a family. This must be strictly implemented.
2) There should be a massive media campaign to increase awareness. Every TV anchor should be obliged to do at least one program in a month on this topic where we should have extensive debates. Every doctor should be obligated to display awareness posters prominently in his room.
3) Instead of sasti roti or income support programs we must have sasta condom or sasti pill program (of course the campaign can be done more tastefully). In fact contraceptive products should be distributed free of cost in every retail out let of the country. Every retail out let must display awareness posters at most prominent place in the shop. We should have vending machines dispensing these products for shy people free of cost. I am sure this investment will be the most fruitful investment in the country.
I am sure other posters also can come up with some innovative ideas to counter this huge problem which can be implemented in the country very easily.

Well said!
The current wave of ever-increasing inflation has realised many people especially in cities like Karachi to go for family planning. Although their representative party played a negative role in this regard in the 80's and 90's.
