Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

I’m not sure if this will do any good, but I’m glad there is pressure on govt to undo these laws.

Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

 **By THE NEW YORK TIMES**

MILAN — In a forceful appeal for religious freedom, [Pope Benedict XVI](http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/b/benedict_xvi/index.html?inline=nyt-per) urged Pakistan on Monday to repeal contentious blasphemy laws as he called on governments worldwide to do more to enable Christians to practice their faith without violence, intolerance or restriction.

Pope Benedict XVI spoke to diplomats at the Vatican on Monday.

The pope was speaking in an annual address to diplomats accredited to the [Vatican](http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/r/roman_catholic_church/index.html?inline=nyt-org), a long-scheduled event. But this year his words came after bomb attacks in Iraq and Egypt — the most recent in the Egyptian city of Alexandria less than two weeks ago — and the [assassination last week of a leading Pakistani politician](http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/world/asia/05pakistan.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=Salman%20Taseer&st=cse) who had opposed his country’s law that makes blasphemy against Islam punishable by death.

The politician, Salman Taseer, had campaigned against the law and had petitioned the government to re-examine the case of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who was sentenced to death last November under the legislation.
Mr. Taseer’s “tragic murder,” the pope said, “shows the urgent need to make progress in this direction: the worship of God furthers fraternity and love, not hatred and division.”
Referring to the attacks on Christians in Iraq and Egypt, Benedict called on the governments of those predominantly Muslim countries to adopt “effective measures” to better protect religious minorities. Urging Pakistan to repeal its blasphemy law, the pope said the legislation was being used “as a pretext for acts of injustice and violence against religious minorities.”
The pope has often spoken out against religious intolerance, but his condemnations increased after recent attacks on Christian communities in several countries, including Nigeria and the Philippines, where churches were bombed during the recent holidays.
The plight of Christians in the Middle East has been of particular concern to the Vatican, which hosted a meeting of bishops in October to address the issue.
The concerns have deepened in recent months in the face of what clerics see as sustained violence. After a New Year’s Mass at a Coptic Christian church in Alexandria, a suicide bomber killed at least 23 people and wounded nearly 100. In October, a siege at a Baghdad church killed 53 people, prompting yet another exodus of Christians from the country.
On Monday, the pope cited a message to Christians in the Middle East that he delivered during the bishop’s synod in October. “It is natural,” he said, that “they should enjoy all the rights of citizenship, freedom of conscience, freedom of worship and freedom in education, teaching and the use of the mass media.”
The pope also took Western nations to task for marginalizing religion and minimizing its role in contemporary society, and he called for dialogue between faiths to promote “a common commitment to recognizing and promoting the religious freedom of each person and community.”

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

Who the hell is POPE to tell us what to do and what not to!!! he better tell Europe to repeal the jews supporting laws.. where people have been convicted and sentenced...

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

The POPE

The Vatican is making a grave mistake by barging into this debate.. now the extremists on all sides are going to start foaming at the mouth and forming thier lines of command.

Theres enough tension in Pakistan allready, what with all the revolutionary, reformist, anti and pro colonials and Islamist Zealouts… the last thing we need is anyone assuming the Vatican is calling for another Crusade.

This is a senstive time and everyone needs to keep thier heads cool, unfortunately while I respect the Pope as a leader of another Faith, his tactless approach shows poor diplomatic skills and will only highten the anti-Christian crowds feelings in Pakistan…

What the Pope should have done was speak up for his flock but perhaps using strategy of getting Muslim ulema to sit and talk it with him… now he has just made the mistake of annoying the common Pakistani and giving the Mullahs the upper hand… it’s easy fot Mullahs to stoke feelings now.

Besides is this the Pope of the same Catholic Church which issued Papal Bulls during the period of the Inquisition and which openly supported colonial ambitions throughout the centuries? :hmmm:

I think this is a grave mistake on the part of Pope Benedict he has literally poured water onto a Phosphorous bomb… :nono:

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

^^^
What should the pope do to express his opinion. Make his own killer brigade in Pakistan to make himself heard. Why we Pakistanis can not tolerate any one's point of view and have to relate everything with phosphorous bombs. Isn't it more civilized to make a discussion instead of violence to come to a conclusion???

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

^ Yes totally agreed we should sit down and talk things through and my post reflects that... however no man who commands the respect of a lot of people should speak about grave matters to hosts, we are all entitled to our opinions and we should all respect that, however leaders need to be more cold faced when dealing with serious matters... this is my view.

When you have lives hanging on your words you dont fret like a child it's time to sit and draw your full powers, what the Pope should have done was called a meeting with some of the best Ulema to discuss the matter rather than speak of it to laymen like our own fanatics.

When a leader makes his views known to many people he becomes less potent, I would never want to be a political leader for this reason.

The Pope had no need to barge into a tense situation, if he called the Ulema in for a debate at the Vatican then it would be more seemly by making a public fuss he has undermined many people.

Violence is not good but you have to understand that until men and women can command others respect with real diplomatic skill then nobody will listen if they know a tantrum will be more effective.

If the Pope and Ulema had a platform of common grounds even a basic agreement on core issues then their would be mass rejoicing but instead we have people now looking at it like black v white affair and picking sides.

As soon as you let the masses pick sides prepare for the worst.

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

Very sad to see people using insulting language for Pope. Shame on you. :nook:

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

[mod]Thread cleaned, please be respectful when you mention the pope..[/mod]

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

oh wow, we get more offended when somebody calls a pope plumpy, and we are all ok when somebody calls everything to an aalim-e-deen in islam. please be respectful when you mention the pope, but go all abusive against ulama of your own religion.

shamelessly today we hold our enemies dearer to us than our leaders.

delete this one also if you get offended by truth

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

I wanna see "any kind of insulting remark" targeted to any aalim being deleted like this, irrespective of how bad "we think" he is. in several religion and PA forum threads

and i wanna see same sentiments from people for their own religious leaders when somebody talks crap about them. shame on you

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

Not that I hate the pope or whatever but I agree with Aceones when he says it should work both ways.

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

^ gdawsome: neither me, no body "hates the pope" in person, just like you.

if one or two words were not as per forum policy, remove the words, edit out the post, why delete the whole post and the relevant parts? and if we want to make sure no religious leader is being mocked upon, this should include religious leaders of your own religion as well, but unfortunately we in the love of west, we hate ourselves and cannot listen anything against our enemies, height of hypocrisy and self hatred

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

Oh I wasn't implying you hated the pope bruh! I'm saying I agree with you when you say moderation should go both ways. If there's some people dissing the pope, then others should be free to hate on the Ulema and vice versa. I believe in equality ;)

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

[note]According to forum rules you can not be disrespectful to any religious figure including Islamic religious leaders.. Please do point out when this rule is ignored by moderators. Your moderation team is committed to keep your forum a decent discussion place..[/note]

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

i know awesome, dont worry, i meant to say i dont hate this man as well but we very often see people getting away with using abusive language for ulema, and here someone called a pope plumpy and his post gets removed, and other people being so emotional for pope's respect that they started telling "shame on you"

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

thanks yazdi, i definitely will point out. appreciated

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

There's always a middle way - it is the most powerful way ... In this regard let's all be polite to one another, respectful to both pope and ulema and keep the blasphemy law and correct its implementation to reflect the Sunnah most accurately with greatest sense of wisdom.

Lastly, forgive each other.

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

Instead of general criticism you will help your cause a lot better when you can point out specific cases where some respectable ulemas of Islamic faith have been insulted in the forum. The forum policy is to allow discussion if someone does not agree with religious person's opinion to have a certain freedom of expression. The existence of this thread is a proof of this fact. Insulting religious figures of any faith is not allowed in this forum..

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

Psyah, good one brother!

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal

.

in the end pakistan has decide its blasphemy laws. be it a total shut out, like it has, or a more forgiving implementation. this, however, is not the best time for giving an inch, we all know the govt is wanting a mile

swap assiya for afia

Re: Pope Urges Blasphemy-Law Repeal
