Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

** SYDNEY, Nov 8: ** Australia cricket captain Ricky Ponting offered to apologise on Wednesday to any Indian officials who felt insulted by his team’s victory celebrations after the Champions Trophy final this week.

Ponting said the Australians intended no offence and admitted the flak they had received for allegedly manhandling Indian cricket chief Sharad Pawar off the presentation stage had marred their first successful Champions Trophy campaign.

“It probably has had a little bit of the gloss taken off, but I’ll be doing the best I can to get my point across to the concerned people in India and let them know we were not trying to embarrass them or anything like that,” he told reporters.

“We were all pretty keen to get our hands on the trophy and celebrate accordingly.”

Indian cricket stars Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar criticised the Australians’ behaviour after the eight-wicket win over the West Indies in Sunday’s final in Mumbai.

Ponting, visibly impatient after the long presentation ceremony, gestured towards Pawar with his forefinger, asking him to quickly give away the trophy which Australia had won for the first time in five attempts.

“I was standing just behind the guy waiting to be presented with the trophy and it wasn’t coming my way so I reached around to accept the trophy from him,” he said.

Indian newspapers displayed pictures of Australian batsman Damien Martyn pushing Pawar with his right hand, urging him to get off the stage so the team could pose with the trophy.

Ponting said he was aware the Australian cricketers were representing their country and promised they would be more aware of protocol in future.

The Australian captain said he was willing to apologise to Pawar.

“If we all feel that it’s relevant then I’ll certainly do that,” he said.

What Ponting did was alright well it seemed it was friendly, however I think it was Damien Martyn that did something that he needs to apologize for, maybe his emotions got the better of him, he should express his regret, and that should end right there...I mean this is nothing compared to other controversies.

They are after all from the land of Hair, what else do you expect? They don't even see anything wrong with hair. Arrogant to the last.

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

I think you didn't notice one thing when Ponting was eager to hold trophy and asking for trophy in misbehave manner, he should have waited for Pawar to handover trophy to him, that was not a good gesture by ponting. And you know today in Indian news papers what is the headline *"Ponting showed he is no cricketer - an Australian joker of third grade" *

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

I mean it seemed like he did it jokingly from the video I've seen...I mean the indian guy I dont who it was was smiling and laughing with Ponting when he did that. I personally believe indian media is making it out as if it was a international incident when its nothing more than being rude.

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

Did it surprise any one with the Australians behaviour?

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

I've just watched former Pakistani cricket player Zaheer Abbas interview on Indian media channels, he was saying "BCCI should send complaint to ICC in written coz this is legally against the ICC rules & regulations, he also said "ICC should teach Australian team a lesson for misbehaving with board of directors".

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

I think its more because of resentment and jealousy than anything.

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

Resentment and jealousy by Indians because Australia won the trophy?

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

then watch again

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

I don't think so. It was pretty odd when I first saw it live during the ceremony. The way Pawar was pushed so that the team picture could be taken was very very rude.

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

What kind of a person would call the president of a board "the guy"? This is quite rude in itself. Why couldn't he call him Mr Pawar?

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

saaley rednecks... apologize kiya nahi... apologize karne ki offer ki hai.

^ he says "If we all feel that it's relevant then I'll certainly do that," he said.

I bet he is going to consult with Hair ! :o

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

for one, i'm quite sure that the concept of respect - particularly for elders - is nowhere near as paramount in australia as it is in india and other eastern cultures.

so i think this should be judged in terms of australian norms. if i were to guess, based on their standards it would simply be a rude act and nothing more.

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

Ponting didn't do that, Martyn did.

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

All Aussie team need is a kick in the @$$…although I am no fan of Indian cricket official but that really was rude. I was recovering from the shock of Ponting asking for the trophy in misbehaving manner when I saw Martyn almost pushing Power away. I felt REALLY bad.

Looks like they still need more lessons. They did not learn from Hair’s episode.

^What ever happened to animal rights?

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

^ Animal have rights but Martyn dont ;)

Re: Ponting offers apology over Aussie victory antics in India

That’s pretty insulting for the donkey to be named after an Australian cricketer. Well, at least they didn’t name him Ponting.
