Re: PM orders immediate shutdown of Youtube services
I think everyone is getting it wrong including Hillary Clinton. There is a difference between Freedom of Speech and Hate Speech. The movie represents Hate Speech just as Anti-Semitism or denial of Holocost is considered Hate Crimes. Surely, they have found ways to shut people on these, they can very well ban the video for it being hate mongerer.
Re: PM orders immediate shutdown of Youtube services
I was being sarcastic. Its a ridiculously disproportional response. Think about it, the whole of the Muslim world is responding to some jackass's video. The guy who made this is probably laughing at the reaction.
I agree with the type of protests around the world are not the type I like to indulge myself.
You think it's appropriate for the PM to respond to a Youtube clip? Talk about lowering yourself to their level.
Do you guys really think this will help the Muslim world? Do you really think people will suddenly stop disrespecting the religion? If anything, it's going to get worse.
Whether it gets worse or not, it does not mean Muslims stop speaking out against such crossing the line. If rank-file person who could've blocked it initially did not block it then PM is right to order the ban, I don't see anything wrong with that, he is taking steps to keep people calm.
Re: PM orders immediate shutdown of Youtube services
YouTube blocked? so people cant "search and watch it"? Now if we expect people to do that, whats the fuss about? NO MUSLIM (in sane mind) will search for the video and watch it on YouTube and if he/she does, whats the point protesting against it?
and for you tube (and for many other western outlets), its about time that they start differentiating b/w FREE SPEECH and HATE SPEECH just like they do in case of Holocaust denial. Want to know the name of countries where you can be punished for just questioning/denying Holocaust?
1 Austria
2 Belgium
3 Bosnia and Herzegovina
4 Czech Republic
5 France
6 Germany
7 Hungary
8 Israel
9 Liechtenstein
10 Lithuania
11 Luxembourg
12 The Netherlands
13 Poland
14 Portugal
15 Romania
16 Spain
17 Switzerland
I have heard few dialog of the movie on local radio while driving and it surely comes under hate speech.
All of these countries with the exception of Spain, Switzerland, Israel and Portugal suffered during World War II under the Nazis.
These countries passed what is called the anti-Nazi Laws in 1947 which outlawed the Nazi Party, banned nazi periphanalia, made it illegal to be part of the nazi party and denying nazi crimes such as the holocaust.
USA, Canada, England, etc. were never under direct German rule and thus they don't have these laws.
So there goes that attempt to create a false equivalency.
Re: PM orders immediate shutdown of Youtube services
Don’t Hunt What You Can’t Kill.
That’s actually been one of my little mottos in life.
I was hoping (against hope) that Pakistan government wouldn’t take such as step. But now that they have, I do hope they stick to it, and actually force YouTube to not just remove the original video, but also the various copies that are being uploaded (I am sure) by other Islam/religion hating individuals. I do know for a fact that YouTube has the technology to scan each video that is uploaded and remove it - they do it all the time for copyrighted stuff.
PTA can block individual video URLs, and they did, insofar as I know, when these videos were popping up. But I am sure they spiraled out of control, and like the Afghan government, they went in for the full site censor. So now, instead of Pakistani government yielding (and putting YouTube up as a winner), they should stand firm and call for some action this time. Only then, would I file this episode as a success for Pakistan government. Otherwise, it’ll go in as another international fudge up!
Re: PM orders immediate shutdown of Youtube services
^ you are right, denying oppression/suffering of people can't be compared with insulting prophet of a religion followed by only 2+ billion people.
The insult of a prophet does nothing. If CNN starts hyping this movie, then yes, you've got beef. If you expect every right wing nut in the Christian world to respect Prophet Muhammad, then you're in for a rude awakening.
Again, if Youtube, or Google, or the US government starts blasting Muslims, then by all means, protest. If some random jackass does it, just ignore him.
Re: PM orders immediate shutdown of Youtube services
But Youtube is not endorsing anything. Nor is the US government or any official in the government.ll?
and the protest is not against youtube or any other govt. Its just a way of showing displeasure.
Passion of Christ was not officially banned in Israel but no Israeli distributor bought the rights of that movie. It was just their way of showing displeasure.

I don't expect them to "respect" but I don't expect them coming out on road, media making insults, there is a difference, no?

Its unpopular speech (you can call it hate speech or whatever) is that needs protections not popular speech.
Re: PM orders immediate shutdown of Youtube services
who said to burn out your own country in protest? Its the height of nonsense IMO. But banning sites which promote such material is the better way of protest as I said earlier.
Fine, now explain to us why are people still protesting when youtube is banned? By your logic once youtube was banned people should've stopped protesting.
Re: PM orders immediate shutdown of Youtube services
Yeah why did the brits waste the tax payer's money on court proceedings over inflammatory facebook messages recently? Let's see how much other "grossly offensive" stuff on facebook, youtube etc they care about.
The west overall has much more tolerance towards all religions. It is not perfect, unless that was your expectation. Maybe you can also choose to direct criticism where it belongs.

Displeasure against whom? Some right wing nut jobs? And if protest was not against youtube why is it banned?

So should we evaluate someone whether he is a 'nutjob' or not before showing displeasure? :) I don't think whole Youtube is banned, even if it is banned then Youtube is to be held responsible to an extent for being irresponsible to let such hate video be published on its website.

The video does not violates youtube terms of posting. So, why should it be blocked? Banning youtub in Pakistan will have zero impact on youtube/google & people who want to access will still be able to access it. However, what it does is shows level of intolerance & brings negative publicity to Pakistan & Islam.
Re: PM orders immediate shutdown of Youtube services
and info about this video might be not relevant but copy pasting it from youtube…
A young Jewish holocaust denier, posing as a believer, puts some hard questions to the senior curator of the Auschwitz State Museum. After making this video, a “hit” was put out on Cole, and a reward for information on his whereabouts was issued by Irv Rubin (who years later, was arrested by the FBI for planning to kill a Lebanese-American Congressman.) Fearing assassination, Cole went into hiding. He never surfaced again publicly. (1992, 52 minutes)

Kaptaan sahab - it does not take much effort to evaluate such scum who produced this video. Maybe, just maybe, I future, the leaders of such protests will take 10 sec of their time to evaluate - for that is all it takes to evaluate such nut jobs.
On related news, the 10-yr treasury appears to have bottomed at 1.38 and was at 1.87 as of close Friday!

Thats what i was wondering too. now the youtube is banned why the protest? they should not protest even if someone uploads anything else in the future.
I also wonder all those people who support the banning idea and are privileged to be outside the country, will be voluntarily abstain from youtube and google? if not then munafiqat at its best.

I said banning site promoting such material is better than burning infrastructure of the country. Its just one way to register your protest. There may be other ways of protesting this attitude (not necessarily violent) for attacking Muslim sentiments on the name of so called freedom of speech.
