ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani Thursday extended the term of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Ashfaq Paervez Kayani for three years starting from November 29, 2010.

In a televised announcement, the Prime Minister said the decision to extend the term of COAS has been in consultation with the President Asif Ali Zardari ‘to ensure successful culmination of the ongoing war against terrorism’.

**“The government is presently engaged in war against terrorism which is now in a critical stage,” the Premier pointed out, adding, this requires continuity of military leadership under the present Army Chief who led successful operations in Swat, Malakand and South Waziristan. **

He said the Army Chief, due to his professional capabilities and leadership qualities, is looked upon with respect and honor both domestically and internationally.

The Prime Minister said the operations initiated against Taliban, Army Chief remained engaged in the planning, execution and supervision of military operations, making possible success of the offensives launched against the militants.

General Kayani who succeeded Gen Musharraf as Pakistan’s 14th army chief on November 29, 2007, is a recipient of Hilal-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) for his meritorious services.

He served at various levels of command including his stint as Director General Inter Services Intelligence.

Besides being Chief of Staff Corps, General Kayani has also held the coveted post of Director General Military Operations.

General Kayani is a graduate of Fort Benning (USA), Command and Staff College Quetta, Command and General Staff College Fort Leavenworth (USA), Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies, Hawaii (USA), and National Defence College Islamabad.

He possesses wide ranging experience in Command, Instructional and staff appointments and has commanded an infantry Battalion, Infantry Brigade, Infantry Division and a Corps.

After 'negotiating' such a huge extension in his term, there is no way Kayani will let go of power after another 3 years.

Another coup, or an 'appointment' as President/PM will occur.

That is the history of the Pak Army politician Generals.

Re: PM extends Army Chief’s term for 3 years from Nov 29

I guess none of the successors are capable or competent enough, having spent their 'professional' lives dealing in real estate and golf clubs.

Re: PM extends Army Chief’s term for 3 years from Nov 29

Pakistan is changed, judiciary & media is powerful. Democracy is getting strength, it’s a political decision.

I don’t see any coup in Pakistan in future. :k:

yah, independent judiciary, free media and strong democracy, they all sound good until the next COAS decides to flex his muscles. Then everyone will be lining up to say amen to his whims.

I guess for you the history of Pakistan started only 3 yrs ago.

so how long we have to wait, 3 years as per your saying? .. so lets wait :k:

Re: PM extends Army Chief’s term for 3 years from Nov 29

and giving a wholesome 3 yrs extension? thats nuts!

what does it imply, a freakin' half a million plus army doesn't have the professional capabilities to prepare the next in line successor?

Re: PM extends Army Chief’s term for 3 years from Nov 29

^ you just didn't get it what I'm sayin'

it's 650000 active + 500000 (reserve) - so technically it's more then million.

In the middle of the war which is actually a war of survival for Pakistan their are two key people: General Ashfaq Kiyani & General Tariq Khan - both of them must stay until this war as Prime Minister said "to ensure successful culmination of the ongoing war against terrorism"

yah and thats exactly what Gen Zia had though about himself, Akhtar Abdur Rehman and bunch of other thugs in uniform.

In a professional institution, there are no key people to the point of being indispensable.

I know it would sound an alien concept to many!

Sir jee, This all is still a dream.
Only puppets there.
So they killed Benazir because they wanted only puppets like Rehman Malik.
One thing is right.
There is no establishment now.
Only a money making mafia, Which is powerful than everyone.
Jis ki lathi us ki bhans جس کی لاٹھی اس کی بھنس
I still believe that Kiani is a good one but the mafia is more powerful than him.

^ who are the "mafia"? political parties or army in general?

Re: PM extends Army Chief’s term for 3 years from Nov 29

3 years is perhaps too much, but, i think its okay to extend his term, he seems to be a sensible person, and one never knows if next will turn out to be another musharraf

I wish he does turn out to be another Musharraf, we don't need this kind of shameful democracy.

Unfortunately Pakistani history shows us the Politician-Generals have the same lust for money and power.

They just sit and wait for their chance to take over the country, and loot and kill like Musharraf and Zia.

The few professional COAS we have had, have retired when their term is over, and lived a quiet, non-political retirement.

Its a good decision. You cannot think of changing the leader and Chief of your Army in the middle of war and unrest from East and West of your Border. Too Risky.

Well, this confirms we have the only army that has a country!
Is there nobody around him from kakul who can do his job? He is mostly flying off to US and shaking hands with 2nd , 3rd rate civic servant from master USA. If there is only one man in PA who knows how to conduct/plan WOT then we are in deeeeeep shyte!!

Re: PM extends Army Chief’s term for 3 years from Nov 29

BIG mistake! NS also extended Mushrraf's tenure & and we all know what happened. PM should remember that its easier to hire generals in Pakistan than fire them. It would not surprise me that if with this Gilani/Zardari may have sealed their fate. Only time will tell.

Speak for yourself. There is reason why we are where we are as a nation & its b/c of crooked generals. They are responsible for our miserable state of existence that we find ourself in now.
