Dubai is a city WHERE U CAN GET ANYTHING IN THE WORLD... yes u can get bridal wear VERY NICE ONE's DIRECTLY from India/Pakistan... especially those lovely indian sarees... prices are bit expensive but the stuff is good. Place is called Meena bazaar.
As for general shopping, there are more malls then the states of America :) even u can find snow in this part of the desert as well. Just name anything... kuch bhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. her cheez milay gi yahaan...
From Gold to paan anything, khusaas to philipino sweets :D

Well slow ur horses!!! 
From the airport take a taxi n tell him meena bazaar he will take u there… as for the expensive thingy then my dear.. a saree cost here around 2000 dhm to 5000 as well. Currency rate 10 dhm = 160 rupees (pakistani) now u can judge urself expensive or not!!!
I would say since u want to do shopping for wedding is say achi jaga koi nahi… EVERYTHING taking from gold, artificial jewellery, clothes, electronics her cheez milay gi expensive bhi ar normal rates per b!!!
Jewellery from gold souk, even in meena bazaar also u can find.. electronics in all the shopping malls her cheez available hai yahaan!!!

What about traditional Arabic dresses (galabeyas) or abayas? What is the best place in Dubai to buy those and what are the average cost?
How much less could I expect to spend on a heavy gold set as opposed to in the US or Canada? Is it less than Pakistan?

Shopping in dubai is a dream come true. they have beautiful cloth. especially fancy clothing. The prices are not exactly cheap but you can definitely bargain the price down to reasonable.
I did not quite like the designs of the gold jewellery at the shops I went to in dubai and abu-dhabi. it was sort of bulky and tacky-looking. Prices are much less that US or Canada.
abayas are available at every shopping center. maybe i didnt visit the better shops i guess.
however the men in meena bazaar are disgusting. they make shopping an uncomfortable experience.
