We can’t edit our old posts as of now; eg. I posted some factual information yesterday which has a mistake in it and I need to edit that post but there’s no edit button on my post. PM’ing the mods to edit the post and explaining the edit I need is an effort, not to mention there’s going to be a time lag between the time when I PM the mods and the time that the post is actually edited by them.
We need the edit button there, not just for convenience, but also because after all GS is a public message board and I think we should be able to edit whatever we post here.
If the feature was difficult to implement I wouldn’t have insisted on it but it seems that it has been omitted deliberately – though I’m not sure why.
i believe the edit button is available for 24 hrs after u post irem...after that, its no longer available...
reason being simply that there were many threads where a discussion was being carried on, for a couple of days even, and the thread starter then went on to edit out the first post completely, which renders the thread useless after that...similar to what was happening in image gallery as well, where ppl were posting pics and removing them after a short time...that leads to unnecssary thread closures and removals...so the reason this was implemented, i believe, is so that people should think carefully about what they are posting initially...
DM thanks for the reply :) I totally get you and I comlpetely agree with you that it leads to problems when the original poster removes his or her post. I can see why this is problematic for Image 2 (Personal Images) but I would think that it shouldn't be that much of a cause for problems in the other forums. For all the forums besides Image 2, I would think that the potential benefit of the Edit button outweighs its potential harm.
Edit: So maybe we can implement the EDIT button for all other forums and leave it out for the Image section?
I like the it the way it is now. You have 24 hrs to edit the post, picture, rants and raves and any other mistakes. If its a factual post or something, take the time to find the facts first before posting. If its a matter of life and death and the facts need to be edited, then send the PM to mod and they can do that for you. Thats what they get paid for i.e to read, edit, move etc :>
JB - Not a bad idea, but I think that would be too complicated, I think we should just simply have the Edit button, that would be much simpler I think.
Umer bhai hawww you mean you didn’t know? Gosh! Where have you been living??? I made $5000 serving as GS mod. I suggest you contact the admins ASAP coz you never know, Pakistani log haen, aap ka paisa hazam kar gaye toh
p.s. No I don’t think they get paid or atleast I didn’t when I was one so don’t worry

I came to know AFTERWARDS that they were incorrect
underthedome dil khush kar dya!!! [you have made my heart happy!!!] God bless you!!! :D and I'm not surprised that you agree with me...I mean, you know, after all, great minds think alike innit :D
The reason behind this, Irem, is the same reason behind all other policy edicts – they come out of Admin/Mod’s ass and there’s very little, if any at all, thinking put into those.
Having explained that, let me see how many words I can come up with by rearranging/scrambling EDIT (and from within):
Diet (I just came back from my internist, my cholesterol has shot off the scale.. it is now in mid 6 figures)
O.k. … lets discuss this. come up with a list of pros & cons.
For me personally, I love the concept of having a restricted window for editing posts (say 24 hours / 48 hours or whatever).
It’s a Poka-yoke of sorts… a fail-safe mechanism against losing the context of discussions while positively affecting the quality of discussions on the forums.
Just off the top of my head, here are the PROS of NOT HAVING the EDIT feature available perpetually:
1- It acts as a preventative measure to maintain the context of discussions. Someone who happens to read a thread after a year can still comprehend what was being discussed.
2- The edit function has the potential to allow a member to drastically modify their posts which leads to a lot of waste of useful space (in the case that the thread becomes redundant) and time (in case moderators have to review and/or remove the posts/threads).
3- If posters know that editing is a non-perpetual feature, we will have more deliberated and carefully thought out discussions in the first place (i.e. a poster cannot retract what he/she said earlier).
I think it’s a great option. People used to post something and then edit it and people who didn’t log in that day missed what was said. Now everyone will think twice before they post something :k:
p.s. Ever since we switched to this new system, mods have started to get paid. There’s a “mods’ conference” coming up in Summer which is taking place in Paris.
The biggest CON, obviously is, that, every few days, we have to respond to threads in Feedback lamenting the loss of Edit button. What a waste of mental calories.
Irem baji… fikr not.. hamm hein na fikar karnay ke liyay. Aap dil laga ke post karein. :k:
Faisal dude - I was waiting to Irem to answer my call so she could show how the CONS of NOT having the feature outweight the PROS of NOT having - lekin yesh... based on your simple point, I'm starting to think they would indeed outweight the long list I posted :)
