While this may be an All Views thread, since Life1 gets the lion’s share of traffic, I’ve decided to open the thread here
I apply the same rules online that I do off-line, treat people with courtesy and respect and don’t get into unnecessary disagreements - life is too short to sweat the small stuff. But just as in real life, we don’t always like what others have to say and we will disagree with others and challenge their ideas and employ sarcasm and at times contempt to counter ideas and attitudes we dislike. We do that in person and we do that online.
So what does it mean to play nice on the internet and to what extent are we expected to play happy families and sing kumbaya together? Is sarcasm bad, how personal is too personal? And do you have to have a tough skin to accept criticism and dislike from other online posters?
I think people can be 'nice' without the whole singing kumbaya. There was one point in time I was all for sarcasm but honestly lately its getting overly excessive and rude. And most people do not have thick skin.........as much as they would like to think they do. I'm not much of a poster so I really haven't had any experience with people criticizing me personally but yeah I will say it does get under my skin at times when certain people will continually attack or 'criticize' others (half the time regardless of what they posted)..........just because of one previous experience with the poster. So I can only guess what it would feel like if it was aimed at me.
Sarcasm is OK, getting personal is also OK. I dont understand this policy that we should not get personal with each other. If CM says something ridiculous, which is most of the time, should I be so careful and say - your post does not make sense - I disagree with your post because. Or should I be able to tell him. you dont make any sense - you are clueless.
I think the latter approach should be allowed. If we cant get personal, we are just robots.
I usually have thick skin..i am saying usually. Saying this coz i welcome constructive critisizm. However, what xtron doesn't appreciate is someone is *****ing and complainting about me. If they have a problem i tell them..talk to me. And this is for online as well.
Yes sometimes i am guilty of playing nice on internet and that is only because i think i am nice to some extent. I believe everyone has a right to express his/her opinion as well as be able to hear without holding any bias and this my friends..our desi mentality lacks.
Secondly, xtron doesn't appreciate is attitude which some our desi women who are world champions in it. This goes for online as well as out of online life.
This is the key to enjoy internet.
