I recall reading it a few days ago in a newspaper. Unfortunately, not much detail was provided. It said if detected, the user would be given a few days and would eventually be restricted to only using IE, that too for an hour at a time.
I’m thinking the detection would only work if one tries to update Windows Vista, unless it somehow automatically checks for it everytime someone connects to the Internet.
Does anyone know how exactly it would work?
First thought that came to mind was if it really works, it would probably mean a lot of lost illegal business both amongst the users in general, and especially in countries like Pakistan where people are charged to have an illegal copy installed on their machine. I wonder if it would require the users to purchase original copies as opposed to the pirated ones.
Vista has a new algorithm that is built in from day 1. So turning off update will not help.
After installation you will need to register/authenticate your copy either online or via mail (not sure about that). If you do not register, the system will still work but some of the high end features will be disabled.
I have been using Vista beta for some time and I am impressed with new features and capabilities. Lets hope that it is priced within reach for Pakistani public. I would really like them to offer special prcing for Paksitan and other such countries. If that does happen how will Microsoft make sure that the copies are not bought cheaply in Pakistan and moved to UK, US and other countries.
I am using Linux at work with wine installed & must admit that most of Windows based software work on Linux with wine. I even made EDIFACT stuff work with wine, thats something that never been tested by anyone on wine.
But u are after something free competing with Photoshop then u may have to look around. (BTW, photoshop works with wine on Linux).
I may test Vista when the production release comes out.
Like Sh3ry said... its only a matter of time Sadiyah...
MS always makes such haughty claims at the launch of every new software application only to find themselves overrun and outclassed.
I'm all up for original copies. I prefer it that way. I still believe Microsoft needs to adjust prices, so the majority can afford it without having to resort to pirated copies.
Besides, I'm sure many would agree that it's quite essential that we keep the OS software updated using Windows Live Update feature due to the number of bugs and loopholes that are discovered from time to time.

you know what.... the updates are also having a great part to keep people nuddging to buy one...
Prices can never be fair....! It is so.... Computer is a place to educate to learn... now many will say then go with own OS or use linux... its also an option... and so many are doing that...

No matter How good vista sounds by reading and testing beta, it will be my 2nd OS in booting sequence, there are not many apps available, vista will have its on issues first and foremost the AV and firewall (3rd party vendors;Symantec and Mcafee...etc) the hardware ppl will have to provide error free driver updates, I say you can breath easy till 2007, and I am sure once this vista is out, there will be some help around updates (if you knwo what I mean;) ) will be available. Personally I am not interested in updating OS by fending out 200+ bucks from my own pocket at all
**In a few weeks time Microsoft is expected to launch Vista, its new operating system, and in January we will all get to play with the finished version. But how safe will this brave new world be?
Given the number of attacks Windows usually attracts it is not surprising that Microsoft has been speaking to anyone they think can help.
A team from Microsoft headquarters went to Malaysia for Asia’s biggest gathering of hackers - not to confront the enemy - but to throw the hackers a party.
But behind the charm offensive, said Microsoft’s Security Programme Manager Sarah Blankinship, lies a serious purpose.
“We come to conferences like Hack in the Box to engage with the security researcher community, to deepen our existing relationships, to understand new technologies, tools and methodologies, and ultimately to help us make our products more secure and to keep our customers safer.”
**"After I presented my findings at the Ciscern conference in Singapore in July, about how to bypass Vista kernel protection, I still don’t feel that Microsoft is going to take it very seriously. ****“I talked to some Microsoft engineers a couple of days ago and they say they’re not sure that they’re going to do anything about this.” **
I am constantly amazed at how people think that they have a right to cheap or free microsoft products. WTH? Someone may justify it by saying that their prices are too high that's why people resort to pirate copies. Well, if you can't afford an expensive car, you don't go out and steal it, do you?
People are blatantly waiting for a way to steal someone's intellectual property, amazing. They spend millions in R&D and you think you shouldn't have to pay for it and then you talk about how crappy the product is. You have free alternatives, go use them.
listen bddy... these words only comes out when your stomach is overflowing....! ask the one who live hand to mouth only by working and earning through these OS.... I mean like NEWS companies or else...
And remember its not only in Pakistan that people use pirated stuff.... Its every here...... Even in Germany too!
