Hubs and I absolutely love the one they sell at Orange Julius. Since i have never tried my hand at making this drink before, please share any tried and tested (and liked!) recipes that you may have. It would be just grand to get a copy cat recipe for the OJ Pina Colada. And yes, i am talking about the non alcoholic kind here.
Re: Pina Colada
Meray pas alcohol wali hai? chehyay hai? ;)
Re: Pina Colada
They're no fun when non-alcoholic! :)
Ok here is what you can do, and their pretty ok, not sure about the restaurant your talking about as I am in NJ.
1 can Goya cream of coconut(or any other good company, its usually a little sweet)
1 can sliced/diced pineapple in syrup. (You can use fresh, but I like canned as they are sweetened)
ice, crushed
just add about 1/2 can oc cream of coconut to blender jar. Add in about 2/3 cup drained pinapple and crushed ice.. Blend until smooth, and serve immediately. If you want, add some pineapple juice to it to make it thinner or more flavor. You can also blend up some berries with ice and almost layer that in the glasses. Fill a glass half way with pina colada, add a dallop of crushed berries and then fill with pina colada. Serve with a slice of strawberry or pineapple in the glass.
Re: Pina Colada
try this one:
1/2 cup of pineapple chopped ofcourse
1/4 cup of (nonfat) milk
1/4 teaspoon of coconut extract
1/4 cup of water
2/3 tablespoons of sugar(or sugar substitute
1 add everything together except water and icecubes in a blender
2 add water and icecubes at a atime to desired consistency
3 enjoy :D
variation 1: get fresh pineapples and freeze them. You wont need icecubes
variation 2: add 1/2 banana :D
Re: Pina Colada
1 cup ice
1/4 cup coconut cream
1/3 cup pineapple juice
1 splash lemon-lime soda
-Frappe all ingredients in a blender.
Re: Pina Colada
i use those frozen mixes they sell in the frozen juice section.
Re: Pina Colada
Thanks guys, i will try these and report back what tasted the best and similiar to what i am looking for.
Re: Pina Colada
And I will wait for your report and then try only that one :D
Re: Pina Colada
^^ me too :)
Re: Pina Colada
with banana it tastes great
Re: Pina Colada
I tried this last night after buying the ingredients and i think it was pretty close to the taste i was looking for but not the same. I think of the culprits was Splenda that i used to sweeten instead of sugar and it left a horrible aftertaste. Also i couldnt find coconut cream at my grocery store, is it different than coconut milk? I know this sounds like a silly question but i had to ask.
Here is how i made it:
1 can pineapple slices, drained
1 can coconut milk
1 or 2 tsp vanilla flavoring
1 tbsp dry grated coconut
Splenda to sweeten
Ice cubes
Mix everything in a blender.
I felt it was lacking in taste and needed stronger taste for both pineapple and coconut. I will keep trying and respond when i have the taste i am looking for.
Re: Pina Colada
Thanks Ira I will try it. Yes coconut milk is different than cream. Wal-Mart has coconut cream in baking section (I think)
I don't like to use splenda it has bad aftertaste.
Re: Pina Colada
Cream is thicker as the name implies...but it better in a pina colada. Perhaps use less coconut milk, and maybe cut down on the vanilla flavoring, I never used Vanilla flavoring. 2 teaspoons is enough to flavor a cake. Also you don't really need sugar, pineapple should be sweet enough, no? Which brand pineapple slices are you using?
Re: Pina Colada
I combined some recipes and made this yesterday..turned out pretty nice..
I don't really measure when I make something on my own so here's the basic idea (approx. measurements)...
Ready made Pineapple+Coconut juice - 1 bottle (330ml)
Canned Pineapple slices - 3
Coconut milk - 3-4 Tbsp
Whipping Cream 2-3 Tbsp
Few drops of Lime jucie
Ice
Mix all in blender..if you wish you can add a lil bit of strawberry sauce(the one used as ice cream topping)

Afro, i learnt about the vanilla bit at some other site about copy cat recipes for OJ drinks, hence tried it. I should look for coconut cream next time i am at walmart. And i added splenda because silly me got the unsweetened pineapple slices, not on purpose. Will try making again.
Re: Pina Colada
Ira after reading this thread, i went to orange julius and tried their pina colada. i must say it tasted very good. i saw a pineapple-coconut drink at the grocery store, and would sometime try making something out of it myself at home.
Re: Pina Colada
Use the recipe on the Coco Lopez can. Coco Lopez is the most well known cream of coconut brand and their recipe is the most authentic (you'll find it in the sharab section of the grocery store).
Basically, what I do is for one serving:
2 oz. coconut cream
2 oz. pineapple juice
1 oz. milk
2 tbsp sugar, to taste
1 c. ice.
Blend until smooth.
I have to rant: I can't stand when people put real flaked coconut, pineapple chunks and coconut milk in a pina colada. The bittiness of it really ruins it for me. You want it icy and smooth.

Hey Ira,
I just did a google on 'orange julius'...and the website says it uses juicy pineapple and lowfat frozen yogurt...i wonder if that is the taste difference? hmm...i wonder what flavor frozen yogurt they use
Re: Pina Colada
miicha, isnt it awesome, the OJ's Pina Colada?
Raatkirani, thanks for the tip on coconut cream. I finally found it at walmart in the alcohol section but its not Coco Lopez, its some other brandand it says Cream of Coconut. Lets hope its teh same thing but it was in the Pina Colada section/shelf so i know its kinda right.
We also got this mixer thing by Malibu and it tastes just yucky. Too sweet and tastes totally fake! Waste of money. Dont know what to do with the rest now.
Afro, yogurt, huh?! Hmmm I should ask them when i am at the counter next time, but i bet they will say it already comes ready made or something.
Re: Pina Colada
Ira...as far as i can remember when we made pina colada in college ...we were also taught to use yoghurt. I think I can find tht recipe somewhere....n if I can ..I'll tell you.
keep trying till then! :)
