PF, interesting points you made about designer vs non-designer. Personally I think alot of it is in the stitching, which is done by the darzi. I doubt that most of these designers actually stitch the clothes on their own. I think theres a big diff btwn a professional darzi and the nukar-wali whose looking for a few extra rupees.. I wish i can find a good darzi in lahore. so far, i've had bad luck finding one.
It is kinnda hard to believe that somebody would spend 2 caror25 lakh( as you said 225 lakh) on a shadi out fit. It comes out as 367,521 $. You can buy a condo in this price range. If you truly did pay this amount and not mistaken in numbers heres then you got ripped off big big time.
Lol...thats why asked you about what you wrote there. 175 lakh wooohh huge amount ... and not 1 lakh and 75 thousand which nowadays most designer charge. AS I am back in sense after knowing the real number so congrats for your big day and the outfit looks really good. I am sure it will suite you as well.
The karighar's and kaam wala's and darzi's that these designers have keep floating..Nomi lost his darzi..and he went independant..so it's ALL the darzi's work..no deisgner actually cuts the dresses himself..all designers really do is delegate color combo's.

yeah its just finding the good ones thats hard! my cousin had her shalwar suit made from hsys darzi (who left HSY) and it came out hideous nothing like the original! even though it was HIS DARZI! its different when u have people watching over it and designers sometimes serve as those people(if you dont have someone else)
Nomi has been in Dubai since Valentine's and so has HSY..they don't watch over the dresses =) all they do is provide "dhaaga's" and threads showing color combinations..sumtime's even those belong to the client!
The darzi's hop from one designer to another..Umar Sayeed's tailor went to Bunto..Nomi's went to Deepak..designers aren't anything without kaamwala's,darzi's and dyers!
^ yeah my clothes were made by karma darzi's, cos the lady i was working with poached them! :p
i do agree with PF on the difference between designers and non-designers... in most cases, you pay for the cut/fall/drape and of course, the personal attention... a tariq road darzi, no matter how good, is not going to give you hours of his time nor will he make samples first for you to try on or offer any of the other services that a designer will. in the end, a lot of it is you get what you pay for.
i saw the dresses bunto kazmi made for two of my friends and they were very well-made- the fabric was beautiful, the kaam had such "nazakat" and it was so neat- like with my outfit too, you would flip it over and there would be such cleanliness to the pattern.
like PF said, its also all in the details, its in the finesse of the kaam and the finishing of the pieces and that makes a big difference, i believe.
most designers, i'm assuming, went to fashion school and learnt the proper techniques, so even if they're not actually physically cutting the fabric, they can guide the darzi into doing what will look good and fit well. in this case, a darzi/kaam wala/whomeever else are tools for the artist to use- by themselves, they do not an outfit make.
Pakifairy: I agree with you, and whatever makes you happy, is best. I was just pointing out, from my personal experience, that some of the designer scene does not produce notable results, as one would expect. Didn't mean to get you all riled up :) Certain body types definitely require extra attention to ensure fit.
I wish I had the chance to go to Pakistan myself, but that's what I get for being a busy litigation attorney in New York.
no lawchick i was not saying that CERTAIN BODY TYPES require more attention. i ws saying that designers focus on cut and fall based on body type vs. throwing kaam all over an outfit. my body is tall and thin so don't think for a second that that is what i meant
^i don't think she is saying that you're out of shape, and thats why you had to consult a designer. designers keep everything detailed especially when it comes to a person's figure. they will concentrate more on what you look and plan accordingly rather than a darzi who will just stitch any size you want. that's why i will go to a designer for my wedding too because i am really thin and i think i need that extra attention to make sure my clothes fit me instead of hangin lose in different places.
