PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi clash

Looks like government of ganja bratheran is heading toward head on collision. I wonder if this strike also affects the other international airlines coming to or leaving from Pakistan? It is time to prove Sher-e-Punjab if he really is a sher and have balls to fire all PIA employees as he vowed publicly.

PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi clash

As news of the deaths of two Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) employees spread on Tuesday evening, the national flag carrier’s flight operations across the country began shutting down in solidarity with the protesters, officials said.

While flight operations remained on schedule Tuesday morning despite the PIA union’s call for a complete strike against privatisation of the airline, the situation changed drastically after employees protesting outside the Karachi Airport clashed with law enforcement personnel, resulting in the deaths of two PIA employees.

PIA flight operations were suspended around 4pm at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Peshawar’s Bacha Khan International Airport and the Quetta Airport, officials confirmed. The status of PIA flights at Karachi was already uncertain due to the violent protests.

PIA Lahore spokesman Athar Awan said flight operations had been halted after two PIA employees were killed in clashes with forces. PIA’s employees later gathered outside the Lahore Airport to register their protest, DawnNews reported.

Employees also gathered outside the Islamabad Airport Tuesday afternoon, vowing to continue their protest till their demands are accepted by the government. Police and Rangers personnel have been deployed in the area.

A Civil Aviation Authority official in Quetta told Dawn.com that flights to and from Quetta had been delayed indefinitely following the protest outside Karachi Airport.

Earlier today, Civil Aviation officials told Dawn.com that flight operations at JIA, Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto International Airport and Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport were expected to continue as scheduled.

But as PIA employees in Karachi clashed with law enforcement personnel, the status of a number of flights at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport remains unclear.

Passengers are advised to call the airport ahead of time to confirm the status of their flights.

PIA reservation counters at the Peshawar Airport were shut down at 11am, an airport official told Dawn.com

Protests by PIA employees have also erupted in Multan and Peshawar in solidarity with the treatment meted out to their colleagues in Karachi.

Privatisation of PIA
The National Assembly on January 21 witnessed the passage of six bills, including one to convert the national flag carrier into a public limited company.

Under the bill, Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIAC) is to be converted into a public limited company as Pakistan International Airlines Company Limited (PIACL).

The government plans to split the ailing national flag carrier PIA into two companies and sell the control of its core business to a global airline, but the opposition to the sell-off has been intense.

But representatives of PIA employees announced on Sunday their opposition to the government’s privatisation plan, saying they would continue their strike and bring flight operations to a halt from Tuesday if their demands are not met.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

OP in frustration as jiyalas could get pink slips.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

And they are not even competent enough to get into janitorial services after that.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

Same is applicable to your kith and kins employed in PIA.

Again, I wonder if gangas have balls to fire all employees of PIA. Do you think your PM of Punjab and Dysfunctional PM of Pakistan are competent enough to get janitorial jobs after freezing all their loot maar assets?

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

aqal barhi ke maj barhi or mian aqal ghans khane gai hay kya. What this hast to do with jiyalas?

From now on I am "Jiay Sindh" so down load that I will ever be supporter of national party representing Punjab only.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

Huge majority of these employees are sifarshees and kaamchores with incompetencies. Not to mention PIA is very heavily over staffed. Good move if it gets privatized.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

Lets take a quick poll. Sachay, are you in favor of PIA privatization or no? Just give a yea or nea.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

No I am not. The way ganjas had privatized national entities in past awarding to their kith and kins in peanuts. I absolutely don't believe in their dealings with selling Pakistan's assets. If PIA has to be privatized let the outsiders not relating to ganjas in any way who can tender internationally. The lowest bidder even it comes to Air India should take it.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

But this is the unfortunate story of Pakistan. Go to any entity even army, you will find sifarshees and kaamchores with incompetencies with lots of corruption.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

Privatized or not, PIA should go through massive restructuring and should get rid of excess employees.

Just to give you and idea about how badly PIA is over employed, Plane-To-Employee ratio of most of the top airlines around the world is b/w 200-300 employees per plane while PIA (as of early 2014 data) has 780 employees per plane. PIA employees take kamchoori to another level.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

And why didnt PPP fix it in all of their tenures? :chai:

Atleast current govt is doing something for it. Let them do it

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

At least they tried to fill position more than required…

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

I am all for privatization, in fact that is the only way they can save PIA, but I am with Sachay on his concern. If Nawaz is going to sell it to his own mama or chacha, then it's like keeping the control of the country's main assets in your hand, whether you are on power or not.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

There are always such concerns whenever a institution is privatized in any part of the world. Thats why there is a system in place. These matters must be raised at the house level i.e. assembly or senate. After that there are courts where any evidence of discrepancy can be submitted and a stay can be taken. But we all know why union is doing a "lockdown" here and why PPP has jumped in to save its union. Need say more?

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

Labor unions in Pakistan are usually mafia gangs. I am somewhat against them.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

unions in PIA, Steel mills , other govt institutions (including universities etc) are just the badmashi groups of political parties in Pakistan. These are not actual unions who work for benefit of students/employees

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

PIA has been an ailing entity under governmental control. this has to cease in order for this organization to proper. a massive layoff is in the offing for sure. employee/plane ratio is simply to high.

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

When I was on its audit in 1998, it was among top 10 airlines.

It was the only airline in the world which used to do everything in house from laying the eggs to printing its own stationery.

But Sach has a valid point here, it it is privatized like other privatizations in the country, then there is no benefit in it!

Re: PIA flight operations across country wind down as employees killed in Karachi cla

PIA is a business, and should be run like a business. The Govt. can still keep an interest stake in it to keep it as a national asset, but the Govt. should govern the country and let the savvy and successful people from the Business arena run it. Why not hire managers from among the new graduates across the country who are driving rickshaws instead of landing a job they thought they'd land after studies?

Unfortunately, some people from the existing payroll will need to be let go. It would be good if the Govt. can find other jobs for them so that they can maintain support for their families. It's such a vicious cycle, because if you fire the incompetent person, it isn't the person alone who suffer, it is his/her dependents who bear the brunt of it.
