After a generally uncomplicated pregnancy/miscarriage within the first trimester, how long should the physical recovery period last? If she feels better the next day, can she resume her normal activities (excercise, household chores, walking, sex) if she feels fine? ie. other than spotting, there’s no cramping or pain, and doesn’t feel weak or tired? or should she be on complete rest even though she feels normal?
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
sara ask your OBGYN.
As far as i know, if you miscarried within the first trimester you can resume normal activities as soon as you feel ready. If you are going through discomfort then dont. Look for bodily cues...your body will tell you when it cant handle strenuous activity.
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
Its best to discuss this with your Doc just to be on the safe side. My friend just underwent this situation and although she rested 8 days after the miscarriage and felt totally fine physically, when she started with her usual routine , she started bleeding badly and incured some internal injury as well ...
So its extremely important to get a go ahead from your doctor before getting back to your routine.
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
I concur with AE; obtian advice from your OBGYN and most of all, listen to your body.
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
rest is a must for the first week or at least first few days.
Is everything okay sara?
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
I had 2 early miscarriages and was abe to resume pretty normal activities within a day or 2. Doc told me to avoid stairs and lifting for a week or so but otherwise to get back to normal routine as soon as I felt ready because that helps speed the emotional recovery.
I hope she recovers soon!
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
I asked b/c there are no doctors available right now, also, i've had some pretty bad experiences with doctors now...so im generally mistrusting of them now. But thanks for the advice everyone. Yes hareem everything's fine, thanks for asking :)
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
It takes about 2-3 days to recover fully, especially if a D&C is performed. Also the medication may cause some cramping.

You have to rest!! Don't do any exercise, household chores, walking...and def no sex for the first 40 days...You even can't read Koran or Namaaz..coz you are not "PAAK". Take it easy for 40 days!!
When I had my miscarriage (first trimester)..I couldn't do anything...Even during my pregnancy I couldn't walk and sit anymore....
So I have been resting for atleast 2 weeks...after that I started to do some household chores...but NO exercise...
Your body is very weak after a miscarriage...even it was first trimester...
I had to eat "panjierie" that my mother made...It was really good..coz I feel really better now...then even before my pregnancy!
Good luck!
And I'll pray for you!
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
Sara, since my mom was here, i was able to do complete rest almost for about a week. Then i started doing things around the house but it took me a whole month or so of not being wiped out after class. I remember being so tired that hubs had to bring dinner to me and clean up, i could barely move a few feet away to the couch, just after a day at school.
That being said, every body is different. Listen to yours and inshaAllah you will be fine.
Btw, i dont htink the 40 day rule applies to a first tri miscarriage. I stopped bleeding in 10 days i think. Once you stop bleeding, you are able to do namaz etc. IN a book that i have on women’s menstruation and post partum bleeding, a Sheikh ibn Baaz says, such an early miscarriage where the baby doesnt have a form yet, the woman is treated as a mustahaddah, like you are on your period and she should perform ghusl for prayers. I would suggest you do your own research on this.
Feel better soon ![]()
Really??
Everyone told me about the 40 days…
You could be right!!
I hope I’ll never experience this again!!
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
Uh eating panjeeri will make me a fatass.
Someone told me the benefit of being fat is you recover easily. :D
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
sorry 2 hear abt that Sara. Hope u r doing ok now.
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
Yes that’s true. You are paak once the bleeding/spotting stops. I really wanted to bleed for 40 days after my son was born
it was ramdhan after 2 weeks of his birth
rozay muaaf ho jatay
but i bled for 15 days only sniff i tried my best to get myself declared not paak for 40 days but no luck.so yeah..that’s pakka confirmed that you are paak once bleeding stopped
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
And yeah..no panjeeri..eat iron rich food like mince meats and spinach to build up hemoglobin that went down with the blood loss

is it mandatory to have a D&C after a miscarriage?
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
SS, no its not necessary all the time. If the miscarriage happens naturally, the doc will perform an ultrasound to make sure that all of the developing placenta etc has evacuated. If there are any pregnancy tissues left in the uterus not expelled during the miscarriage then a D&C is necessary.
Another situation is when the fetus expires, it can sometimes remain in there for weeks. There are a few ways to handle this. You can wait for a natural miscarriage and then have ultrasound to make sure its all out. Or you can have a D&C. Or you can take a medication which causes it to expel (in which case the ultrasound would be done too).
I needed to have D&C for one of my miscarriages but for the other one it wasnt necessary.
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
I think ti's better to just have a D&C no?
the natural miscarriage..is painful and well gross. :S
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
its not too bad, its like a heavy period. Sometimes, the gal doesnt know that the fetus has expired so it just happens. For my 2nd one, I opted for the medication that causes it to expel because D&C does cause a bit of uterine scarring and I was concerned about that. It was also much easier since I had 2 infants at home so I avoided hours at the hospital, anesthesia and recovery. I just had heavy cramping etc during the night and was able to care for the boyz the next day. Not a pleasant experience for sure! But it wasnt as bad as you'd think.
Re: Physical Recovery after a Miscarriage
I duno....it felt 50 times worse than the heaviest day, not to mention it was really painful. Or maybe my threshold for pain is alot lower and i'm a big baby
Funny, the doctor said that miscarriage is actually more painful than the pain of delivery. Does anyone know?
