Re: Persecution of Ahmadis Continues Unabated
This tirade does not change the fact that the blatant persecution of Ahmadis in Pakistan is humanitarian concern, not just a “liberal” one. And the bigots who condone or cheerlead discrimination against Ahmadis would not be doing that if they were an Ahmadi living in Pakistan. Hypocrisy, thus, is clearly at play here. What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander too.
What has Pakistan’s Ordinance XX and its second amendment achieved for Pakistan? Pakistan still has among the worst socio-economic indicators, a basket case economy, religious and sectarian intolerance tinderbox, no sense of security and safety, poverty and school-enrollment rates that rival the worst of the worst in Sub-Saharan Africa. What difference would it have made if there were no Ordinance XX? Yes, its absence would’ve deprived obnoxious bigots one more opportunity to massage their already over-inflated egos, but if it were not there, the lives of Pakistani Ahmadis would not have been made hell in Pakistan.
There should be constitutional protections to protect a community from tyranny from another. Faith is a personal matter. The very fundamental responsibility of any civilized state is to ensure equal rights for all peaceful citizens. And anyone who condones discrimination against a peaceful section of society i.e. Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan is in need of some serious self-introspection because there’s nothing noble in bigotry.
