Philosophy of Reincarnation

:salam2:

What is the idea of Reincarnation/Rebirth? Different religion accepts/describe it in different ways? What do you know about reincarnation? Do you believe in reincarnation or not?

Please discuss.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Reincarnation is the religious or philosophical concept that the soul after biological death, begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. This is a core concept in many ancient religions and also the dharmic religions. Barring a few sects, I don’t think adherents abrahamic religions believe in reincarnation.
It is one of the most scientifically researched faith based concept. I mean, how do U prove the existence of heaven or hell ? Atleast reincarnation can be researched back to the source with a very big limitation i.e there is no mechanism known to modern science that would enable a personality to survive death and travel to another body and cannot be recreated in a controlled environment.

Reincarnation research is a branch of parapsychology. Check out psychiatrist Ian Stevenson from University of Virginia’s medical school who did intensive research in that area.
How would U otherwise explain a case like this:
Parents Think Boy Is Reincarnated Pilot - ABC News

As to whether I personally believe in reincarnation, I would have to say that I do to an extent esp since there may have been a possible case of reincarnation in my own family a generation ago :biggthumb:

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

I think adherents of Abrahamic religion believe too in reincarnation but in strong sense that there will be no reincarnation process like a newly born process but they'll become alive on the day of Judgement. They also believe a person regardless to his/her believe will never come back again in this very same world except in the next world i.e. on the Day of Judgement and after that there will be no more deaths, births and rebirths.

One question is always bothering me and it is that those pplz of faiths who believe in reincarnation (other than Abrahamic religion) have ever come across such thing where his or her soul from previous body (after death), came existent into new body in the very same world? Have that person who once lived in this world lets say lived in silver age came back in golden age and claimed that he was so and so from the silver age?

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

When u say silver or golden age do you mean different centuries with a lot of time in between ? The link I posted above has decades between death and rebirth.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Either centuries with a lot time in between, or decades or just difference of days, weeks, month, years between death and rebirth. Do time factor matters in reincarnation?

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Can that even loosely be described as reincarnation ? Do the adherents believe that they will cast off their old body in which they died and rise in a new body in a new world ? I am not sure if u can call it a type of reincarnation otherwise. I understand that abrahamic beliefs prescribe that after death , there will be resurrection and judgement . After that what happens ? Eternal life in heaven/hell ?

In Dharmic religions, there is no fixed number of births and deaths. The entire process can be described as a snakes and ladder game. U roll the dice of life. Do good deeds and u climb the ladder to better life in your next life. Do bad things , u get eaten and move down the board. The judgement by god occurs between lives. Heaven and hell literally is the next live u r given as reward/punishment. The incentive is to be good in your present life and get more and more spiritual as lives go by. AS u perfect yourself over cycles of birth and rebirth, u reach a point when U finally merge and become a part of God. That is the end point. This is the faith based and not the scientific part of reincarnation.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Most cases have at the most been decades and under upto a few months. I am not sure if there have been and researched case where lives spanned centuries. Mythology yes. Science no.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Concept of reincarnation and resurrection is same but I agree with you that other than Abrahimc religion, many other believes that one who died will reincarnation in new body but not in old and same but Abrahimc religion i.e. the Holy Book 'Quran' refute it by saying that they will raised again as they were i.e., in their original form. Lastly as per on'es deeds (good/bad) he/she'll live forever in heaven or hell. Beside this, i was talking about in sense of similarity between Abrahamic and other religion about this concept.

As for ur second para, I would like to know that is there any person who claimed that this is his or her second reincarnation and in very first birth, he or she was so and so and now he or she was so and so.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

No. There have been no persons so far who have claimed to remember more than anything but their immediate previous lives. Studies have shown that most of the ones who remembered were children as young as 2-4 years who had intimate knowledge of their previous life. The way they spoke about it was as if they were mature people not kids. But those" memories " faded and were lost as they grew older and they forgot about it . It was almost like the soul reconciled with the new body.
I have read of yogis and intensely spiritual people who claimed to remember more than one life but I dont think any one has gone out of their way to scientifically prove it.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

:hmmm: I wonder how pplz believe in reincarnation just like many believed that the Toddler with eight legs… <— referred as reincarnation of ‘Vishnu god’, but I don’t think the toddler never claimed itself being a vishnu god.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

People believe in the concept of reincarnation in the same way that some believe in the concept of heave and hell. Atleast reincarnation can be partially “proved” unlike the existence of heaven and hell.
The rest of ur post abt toddlers and people’s beliefs is blind superstition. There is no dearth for that in the subcontinent.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Do you believe in reincarnation?

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

I believe in the possibility of reincarnation as it is a part of my religion and would not dismiss it out of hand . I already mentioned in an earlier post that there is a possible reincarnation case in my family in one of the previous generations as per many eye witness accounts.
But I am not a fanatical believer of reincarnation .

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

No never :alhamd:

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Why ? Because the concept clashes with your religious beliefs or because you personally felt there is no substantial evidence ?

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

What do you mean, when you say there are examples of reincarnation in your family? Did they have memories from their past lives?

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Well nevermind re-incarnation.

What about the notion that some never die in the first place... I believe theres an essence in all of us that is potentially limitless in terms of the life it has within it.

Also Shaheed are said to live forever too, if not in body than perhaps spirit form?

Islam is riddled with examples of life after death, but of reincarnation all I know for sure is the Koran says that even if one is cremated on the day of judgement his body will be reconstructed to its original form.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Reincarnation can perhaps be an interpretation of a verse from Baghwad Gita that speaks of the life before and the life after. If I were to comment on the verse in the Gita ... Then I Would say that I can accept that verse.

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Yes my grand aunt . She is 5 years older than my mom. She had “memories” of her past life , cried for some people of a diff names, whom relatives had never heard of and spoke words of a different language (turned out to be oriya) from another part of the country till she was almost 4. My gran mom and her parents when to temple and had special prayers done for her well being and mental health. Looks like their prayers paid off. She is now a retired botany professor :biggthumb:

Re: Philosophy of Reincarnation

Reincarnation is a part of all ancient and current religions of the world except perhaps the abrahamic religions. Bagawat Gita is not the only holy book that mentions it.
