personal trainer

I saw a personal trainer in my gym today she was so overwieght and teaching others how to lose weight .i dont know how did i keep my mouth shut and walk away. A overweight personal trainer is totally unacceptable . Its not that im being judgmental but a personal trainer is supposed to be fit and in a good shape and should be a good example for others, if my personal trainer encourages me to eat healthy and workout everyday my first question to her will be why dont you do all this before your advice me.

What’s your take on that

Re: personal trainer

Maybe she has just decide to become a personal trainer and is working on her own physique?
Maybe she has other health issues that prevent her from being able to lose the weight but has all the knowledge that is required to train someone?

What’s your take on a smoker advising you not to smoke?

Okay so in that case she should have started workimgout in that gym not as a personal trainer but under a supervision of a trainer. Like I said im not being judgmental but if I had an overweight trainer I would never get motivated and lose weight

Re: personal trainer

I guess everyone is different and it takes different things to motivate them.
When I want to accomplish something that requires training, I am likely to already have identified my motivation(s). It doesn’t matter to me who is guiding me along the path as long as I am getting to where I want to be. They could be 300 lbs but if they have the knowledge to help me then so be it.

If you are not being judgemental then exactly what are you being?

And you didn’t answer my question about the smoker…

Their job is to essentially help people manage their weight and nutrition so should lead by example for the same reason I wouldn’t go to a dentist who had bad teeth or a beautician who didn’t take care of her appearance (for the girls).

I am essentially paying for their service I want them to prove that I can trust their advice and most of the time this starts immediately when you see how healthy they look and its a matter of discipline, I would expect that the person training me is disciplined enough to keep fit , If my trainer does not have the discipline to keep herself fit, how is she supposed to motivate me. It would be much like having a cardiac surgeon examining you while smoking a cigarette.

Now cominng back to your question, first of all it was not an appropriate question these two situations are pretty different cause teaching fitness is a practical skill I would expect my trainer to have first hand knowledge of the subject and on the other hand 95% of all smokers who quit do so on their own and clinicians do not believe brief advice is effective.

Hope yoy got the answer and im not being judgmental im just trying to be realistic and logical.

Re: personal trainer

Consider this, she mighthave lost weight many times and hence has more “experience”.

I am with op on that. You don’t want to see a dentist with bad teeth, or a barber when bad hair day. Same in this case too

Re: personal trainer

As long as the advice is sound…doesn’t really matter who’s giving it.

Re: personal trainer

:cb:

Its just not about their advices as I said teaching fitness is a practical skill. If you are a trainer you gotta be in shape no matter what. I was like 90 kgs a year ago and I had so much information about different workouts and diets and guess what i wanted to be a trainer too with that weight lol but when I realised if I cant implement all these things I know about fitness on me then how on earth would I train anyone else

Re: personal trainer

^For your knowledge, a “fit” trainer has never been in shoes of a “fat, Overweight” person. He/she does not know how the exercises/routines he is advising are going to impact the body or metabolism of an obese person.

A “fit” trainer may overtrain them, give them exercises that are unsuitable to their bodies and lead to injury and further damage. AND not to mention that “fit” or “unfit” trainers both have not been found to have any consistent impact on weight loss in large studies. TRAINERS ARE INEFFECTIVE when it comes to permanent weight loss. The only thing that has been shown to work, is bariatric surgery.

Now, unlike you, not everyone thinks with their eyes.

Re: personal trainer

or a lung doctor who smokes.. my uncle is a pulmonologist, smokes a pack a day

And for your knowledge most of the fitness trainers go through a weight loss journey so it’s absolutely wrong that a fit trainer has nevr been in shoes of a fat.

And your second point DOES MOT MAKE ANY SENSE prabably you must have gone to your GALLI MOHALLAY KA GYM where trainers know nothing, I was talking about proper trainers the ones who are truly passionate have studied for years and have in depth knowledge of both the physical side but the nutritional and psychological side also.

By that logic, a cardiologist without ever having a heart attack may never know the pain, both physical and emotional, of a heart patient, so not eligible for giving any advice.

Yeah ! You’ve got a point there

Re: personal trainer

If she has the certification and the knowledge to train me, I would let her train me.

Re: personal trainer

it’s the knowledge about “how to” that you are seeking…get it from whomever you can get it from…don’t get down to the nitty-gritty.

Re: personal trainer

at my gym even the janitor has to have a six pack. :snooty:

Re: personal trainer

And all I have is a pack of gum sigh!!!

So if a cardiologist DID have a heart attack, he should be disqualified from treating people? It never happens.
Good point, BUT, unlike the OP i am not suggesting that ONLY those with a particular appearance should be able to give advice.
