LastOfTheDinosaurs suggested in an older thread that Persian should be made the lingua franca of NWFP and Balochistan and I agree, whilst Urdu/Hindvi is fine for Punjab and Sindh our people find it hard to learn because it is far removed from our own tongues but Persian would be easier to learn because it is more closely related to our languages and culture, most of our educated elders speak Persian as a second language just like Punjabis are able to speak Urdu/Hindi with ease.
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
hmmm, modern day pushtoon speaks a lot urdu (learnt at school) and enlish (learnt at school, and highly used in university)...they mix so much urdu and english in their language that they have sometimes to ask their grandparents to translate some words...
i am learning pashto and i'm surprised that some of the pashto words found in dictionary are not even used by my pashtoon friends who instead use either englih or urdu....
so your idea seems..hmmm, not so realistic
ok so now ideoligically, urdu is official language of pakistan, so any pakistanese needs to know it...if balochistan and NWFP were to adopt persian instead...they would automatically tilt towards iran and afghanistan...instead of pakistan identity which is urdu united (ahem)...this is very sensible issue...it touches the base of pakistan iddentity...
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
It needn't mean the end of Pakistan, we can still be one state with Isb as the centre but with different culture, to be honest with you I don't want to be Indianised, I'm less concerned about Pashtun culture and more to be affiliated with our western neighbours instead of India.
It's unfortunate that our generation can't understand the big words the elders use because of Urdu influences on Pashto, unfortunately our educated Pashtun girls in Pakistan find it a matter of prestige to speak to their kids in Urdu.
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
Pashtun women prefer Urdu because Urdu is more conducive to a refined expression of sexuality than Pashto, which still has to develop a higher vocabulary for sexual topics. Pashtu women prefer dark-skinned men from Punjab and Sindh, and vice-versa, so Urdu acts as the lubricant that brings these opposites together. :D
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
lol, what’s ur obsession with sex man? t’other 'alf on rag week?
at college desi girls are crazy over Pashtun boys because they love light skin and stocky build.
i don’t know about paki pashtun girls’ sexual preferences because they’re not the hussy types but there are a few afghan pashtun and afghan persian girls in my class and they say they prefer darker pak/indian men because they have a more saltier/spicier look compared to bland afghans, i wasn’t offended because they say pashtuns from peshawar valley are an exception because they’re not a raw deathly pale colour and like Faruk Khan
tend to be a nice gold complexion with black eyes and black hair, i agree with them we pashtuns of the plains have more of a sexier look compared to our highland cousins.
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
Looking at the general literacy rates in NWFP and baluchistan, the first step may be for ppl there to learn to read and write the language they currently speak and then think about anything else.
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
you meant urdu right?![]()
well i heard people complaining than in india and east pakistan, elites find it a matter of prestige to talk to their kids in english intead of urdu/hindi…so it means that whereever we are…we still want to teach our kid the language of the powerfull:D…so to start motivating people speaking dari/farsi in west pak…either iran or afghanistan would have to aquire wealth and international status…
but what i see is on one hand english as the international trade and finance, and science language, and hindi/urdu as the language of pakistan and india…more than 1 billion people:D…while on the other hand iran is suspected by the whole world of building nuclear weapons against the will of all other countries…and afghanistan is a puppet of USA…
so though my heart is pashtoon, and i really do prefer persian culture (strong interest in mughal arts) …objectively…persian was a strong language 2 centuries ago…but thanks to british it is no more…
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
:k:
but learning to read and write urdu, when you speak something totally different doesn’t help, na?
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
But English like those who speak it is tasteless and boring, doesn’t rock my boat at all, we learn it for academic/career reasons because we have to. Urdu is too South Asian. Now Persian is sweet and elegant and posh, Farsi shereen ast.
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
That is because those singing girls in the "bala khanai" (brothal houses) of Luknowoo, who had to serve lords and counts and nawabs, hugely contributed to Urdu/Hindi, especially in the domain of sexology. Another reason was, Urdu/Hindi was refined to express obedience (attaat guzari) and pay respect to authorities in courts, darbars, etc.
Local languages like Punjabi, Pashto, Baluchi, etc. are informal showing the democratic spirit of the people, which is something very very good.
And a linguist would laugh when you say that. No matter whatever way you combine sounds, it will still convey the same meanings. Say it "jama" or "mubashirat", it means "intercourse". No such thing as high vocabulary except for symbols or combination of symbols denoting generalizations. And what would you say of E=MC^2. Will sound garbage to an alien. language is a social and cultural thing.
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
Well we are about 50 millions, so will stick to our own language.
I prefer Pashto because that I evolved to communicate cultural and social feelings with my fellow Pashtuns...one link that binds me to my people and aads to my sense of identity......and prefer English because that it is the language of knowledge and global communication. I harbor no prejudice for any other language provided I learn it voluntarily.

^ Do you want "someone" to spit out bad words from these languages? ;)
Democratic?
My $(
If they were "democratic", they wouldn't be such third world living in a bhooke nangee feudal society but instead be a powerful and richer educated society!

Democracy, unlike opportunitistic and short-sighted approaches, pays off in the long run. Example: Compare Saudi Arabia with India! Look at Germany and Western Europe post-dating Babilun, Egypt, Persia, etc. but surpassing them all in creativity and civilization! :) Please try to think deeply!:)

^ How does that compare with what was and is going on in rural tribal areas of Pakistan? ![]()

Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
Persian was the original dominant language prior to the advent of urdu in the 19th century. People forget Urdu is a new langauge originally a court language only and till recently heavily influenced by Persian.
Re: Persian For Western Pakistan
Blitzkrieg, if you can't type a post with some degree of respect towards the person(s) you're addressing it to, I'd rather have you not posting in this forum at all.
