Performance of referees at the World Cup 2002

We have seen a lot of wonderful games, big upsets and nice play during this world cup. But there is no doubt, that one negative aspect has been the performance of the referees.

The worst (in my opinion) were:

  • Saad Mane (Kuwait) - Denmark vs. Uruguay
  • Young-Joo Kim (Korea) - Brazil vs. Turkey (Incredibly bad!)
  • Felipe Ramos Rizo (Mexico) - France vs. Uruguay
  • Graham Poll (England) - Italy vs. Croatia

Absolutely and good to see you UMER opening such thread. I think this world cup has been full of bad decisions and wrong jugdments made by the referee and the lines men.

Let me add the Japanese goal which was disallowed by the referee for no reason whats ever.

Japan vs. Belgium 3 - 2 Should have been! (Don't remember the Referee).

And Today Brazil vs China (I guess Anderst Frisk) for showing the YELLOW CARD to Ronaldinho for "diving". A total nonsense!

today I was just crying when seeing Graham Poll and his assistents making such bad errors

The answer is to use the modern technology in the same way as cricket and other games, important decisions like penalty kicks and offside decisions could be referred to a TV refree. If technology was being used Rinaldo wouldnt have got away with the shameful behaviour against turkey and instead would have been on the receiving end of a red card.

You missed today's Italy Vs Croatia match.

Italy - Croatia: the linesman was at fault ( oh boy was he at fault!!!). The referee was in no position to over rule him as it concerned off-side decision. The second goal also seemed to be fine and again the linesman mucked it up.
2 beauties disallowed! Boy if Italy get knocked out because of this ....

The referee in the Japan - Belgium match was William Mattus (Costa Rica) and yes his performance wasn't too good either.

Anders Frisk (Sweden) wasn't a very confident referee as well. Although the yellow card for Ronaldinho was a very hard decision, you'll have to admit that he did dive. Under normal circumstances he wouldn't have fallen to the ground after that attack by the Chinese player.

Has been suggested many times and I can not understand why the FIFA is against it.

If your opponent pulls your jersey I think it is your "right" to dive. It was a jersey pull, therefore a yellow card for the Chinese player, surely not for Ronaldinho.

The worst decisions came from the line men and I think they should be more carefully about making decisions and I don’t think this ever can be implemented in “fast” game like football.

Again a very very poor decision made by the lines man in the match between Costa Rica - Turkey. The Costa Rican player was miles On-Side when the referee stopped him from his run.

Well in that case there will always be human error and we have to accept it. After all with all the cases higlighted here they represent what less then maybe 2% of all the decisions given by the officials. Not trying to justify it, but if the game is not prepared to use technology in at least the more important games like the world cup then these sort of decisions will be part of the game. Can't have it both ways. I don't think the officials are doing it deliberately. They call it as they see it. They dont have the luxury of watching the replays.

Ehsan bhai I agree, but as I said if a player can get a red card for a milli sec late tackle (they are human too), then why in world isn't something done about referee with bad decisions?
If I work for a company hard and I keep making errors I'm sure I won't be there for long. I'Ll be replaced for sure.

and the list continues.....

South Korea against USA -- Offside given by the Austrian lines man against South Korea.

Tunisia vs Belgium -- 100% Penality for Tunisia denied by the Referee.

UPDATE:

France vs Denmark Tomasson Jersey pull allowing him a goal.

A Shame and I think this is the first time in WC History that so many poor decision have been made.
Just amazing that FIFA isn't doing anything about it. I guess it's about time to write to FIFA OFFICIALS.

Senegal - Uruguay -- A penality given to Uruguay for no reason.

But the penalty given to Senegal was for no reason either. Either way, Jan Wegereef (NED) was just another poor referee.

12 of the 36 World cup referees will be sent back home after the last match of the second round on 18th June.

Considering the performances so far, I'd suggest to send home almost all of them and appoint some quality referees!

These guys would be on top of my hitlist to be among the 12:

  • Young-Joo Kim (Korea)
  • Graham Poll (England)
  • Antonio Lopez Nieto (Spain)
  • Jan Wegereef (Netherlands)
