Performance of referees at the World Cup 2002

Not a single card from Brian Hall (USA) when he was officiating the match between England and Nigeria.

After highlighting the bad performances of other referees during this World Cup, I think this positive example should be mentioned too. However the quality of the match itself was very poor.

Yep I forgot to mention that.

for me the top three referees are:

pierluigi Collina (ita)
anders Frisk (swe)
kim milton Nielsen (den)

NO way I can not agree that Nielsen is a good referee is the worst I have ever seen.
I never liked him. He gives free kicks where no one would give one and denies free kicks where everyone would give one.

Pierluigi is TOP I agree. Even Anders Frisk is a good one. We can forget about the mistake he made against China vs Brazil.-

Hmmm I don't remember him.
Who was he? Which game did he direct?

^ i can't name a specific match, but i know he was one of my favourites in euro 2000

It was Gilles Veissière from France, who officated the following matches at Euro 2000:

  • Romania - Portugal 0-1 3 Yellow Cards for Romania 1 Yellow Card for Portugal Portugal scoring the game winning goal in the 90th minute
  • Yugoslavia - Spain 3-4 6 Yellow and 1 Red card for Yugoslavia 1 Yellow Card for Spain Game winning Penalty for Spain in the 90th minute

Urs Maier (SUI): Finally a referee that knew what he was doing!

yes, it’s him! I remember him because i think he got guts to give spain that penalty! (it was a fair decision i think- but let’s stop here before we get euro2000 mixed up with this WC

)

And another good performance by Kim Milton Nielsen (DEN).

Now let's hope for Pierluigi Collina (ITA) in the final.

umm sorry if this is a silly question, but have there ever been female referees at a WC match ? If so, for which year(s) ?

As far as I know some of them, like Claudia Vasconcelos (Brazil), have only officiated at the Women's World cup as yet.

As I had expected the final has been given to Pierluigi Collina (Italy), which is a quite wise decision.

He will be assisted by Philip Sharp (England) and Leif Lindberg (Sweden). Can’t say anything about these two. I don’t know them.

However I can’t believe they’re letting Saad Mane (Kuwait) be the referee of the match for the 3rd place. I was not happy at all about his performance at the Uruguay-Denmark match.
