People think me and my mom look Lebanese. I have a friend who's half Lebanese and half Iraqi and she says I look totally Arab and not desi at all. Where we live now, a small rural town, people often ask what we are so I now wear a Pakistan pin on my shirt. :)

It has more to do with people not knowing about Pakistan and just relying on the misinformation from the media than you being light skinned.
They don't tell you you look Scandinavian do they now...

I have got brazillian, mexican, mauritian, moroccan, lots of half this half that, trinidad and tobago and indian..no one ever says pakistani...not even pakistanis..........the reason being i am sanwali and have non typical desi features and brown hair naturally.
I LOVE IT! i take it as a compliment latinos are HOT

seriously, I have known people who don't even want to associate with Pakistan even if someone recognizes them as desis or such. I guess it could also be taqiya considering the "press" Pakistan is and will get as things don't go according to plan in Afpak.

^Well, those people are pathetic. That Afg-Pak term REALLY irks my nerves and I hate how due to political turmoil and recent events has made them synonymous when in reality we couldn’t be more further apart culturally and socially. I use that “pin” as a way to break down those stereotypes so these small-towners (mostly republicans) dont think Pakistan is some uber-conservative country where women are oppressed and have to walk around in burkas. I just want to be known as South Asians, damnit! I hate how some people think Pakistan is in Middle East also.

Well, we do host and worship middle easterners, so they aren’t exactly too far off! 
PS At least, a lot of americans know Pakistan and some of its cities, though I bet many still can’t find it on a map.
