so i am born and raised in america, but originally indian. i was at school today and i was sitting with a couple girls (one of whom was indian). one of the girls asked each girl at our table what their ethnicity was (out of curiousity). i said that i was indian, and all the girls jaws drops like WHAT?? no way! all of them said they though i was latino/mexican. they all agreed that i was too pale to be indian (i actually am really pale/gori…). I mean, there is nothing wrong with being mexican (infact i love latin culture) but the fact that people think of me as a mexican/brazilian at a first glance kind of saddens me because i am very fond of my culture and i would love it if people would ask me more about my indian/pakistani culture, but the truth is they all assume i’m latin. infact, there is a brazilian/latin girl in my class, and my own teacher ALWAYS gets me mixed up with her! and i have to admit, she does look a LOT like me!
edit: a lot of people brought up a good point. i guess what matters more is trying to tell these people not to stereotype like that lol
Khans from Shahjahanpur/Rampur areas in Uttar Pradesh, India are as fair as any European...They are the ones who don't look Indians at all...i was once told that i look like a Spanish guy. that person's jaws also dropped when was told that i was an Indian :)
Indians and Pakistanis BOTH range in skin tones. There are regions within both countries that have people who either look typical Pakistani/Indian/Bengali (tanned skin/big eyes etc) and then there are some which fall under the looks of European/Arab/Hispanic/Tamil/even African. There is a group within the South Asian subcontinent called "Siddhis" who are ethnically African and have kinky hair, black skin but speak Urdu/Punjabi/Sindhi. I just find South Asia so diverse and fascinating, it's hard to classify us under one category. :D
I wouldn't worry too much about this. Ever since I was a kid, I have watched people speak Spanish to my mom...they always assumed she was Hispanic/Latino or something else. Very rarely desi.
Its not a big deal and you don't need to manipulate your features with makeup in order to look more desi.
There isn't only one type of desi...what kind of desi would you like to be? We come in so many different shapes, sizes, languages, cultures, etc that it would be hard to tell you to do anything specific.

so back to my question... is there any makeup ideas that i can try that will make me look more desi like? any hair styles, what lip color, etc?
thanks
wow ... way to stereotype the ethnicity you are so "fond" of.
surely being of south asian background you must know that indians and/or pakistanis exist in all shades of white n browns,
as to your dilemma ...
get a fake tan in the color that you think an indian should be ...
dress in saris/shalwar kameeze/kurtas
This always happens to me when I travel to the US.. especially the southern states. People just assume I'm some kind of latina and start speaking spanish to me LOL. I find it funny.

I'm not stereotyping, infact i actually explained to them that indians/pakistanis come in many colors, not just caramel brown (hence why i found their statement a bit offensive)
I just get irritated, and iwthout fail it happens at stores, when all I want to do is pay for my stuff and get out, some of them just like to make conversation and, the way they ask is just so creepy.
Lookswise, I would say my face shape, nose, and body structure/figure make me look hispanic....in HS I used to get my eyebrows waxed and I had those really thin arches...in college, I started getting them threaded at Indian/Pakistani salons and that seriously makes a big difference in looks overall.
another thing that makes a difference is wardrobe, obv if you wear ethnic/religious stuff etc, people are less likely to mistake you for being hispanic but if you wear revealing stuff..well... :D
oh also, my nose is pierced and I find whenever I wear a particular nosepin, most people can tell I'm desi.....
don't complain, i got italian, spanish, arab, iranian, but that's mostly because there aren't many pakistanis where i live, sometimes people tell me they've never met any pakistani before. hmm ok
the most weird thing that happened though is when a black guy started talking to me in his language in the metro, i said really do i look like i speak your language ?
