People from Peshawar

Forgive me for my ignorance but not being from Pakistan, I am not very familiar with the people of Peshawar. Just recently, we’ve gotten close with a family from there and I’ve got to say that the women are so pretty, dainty and graceful. The language is so sweet :naak:. The men speak in such a nice way as if they can never get angry.

So what’s their culture like? What foods do they make typically? Whet’s their origin? Their languages?

Re: People from Peshawar

Pushto is the language but before i get u any more details, tell me do they have a nice handsome unmarried son/brother? :faizy:

Re: People from Peshawar

I thought differently :naak: I agree their ladies are so good but when they talk it looks like they are fighting. Or men they seem angry but in reality they are not.

Re: People from Peshawar

FT, their unmarried really dashing son is getting married in a few months :@:

Re: People from Peshawar

I don't know about the culture too much either but I observed the same - the women are always so positive and soft spoken. I have hardly ever seen her complain - EVER.

Re: People from Peshawar

Thank you all for appreciating Peshawarites. I belong to a village in the Peshawar Valley. So people seem to be interested in knowing about Peshawari culture. Let me try to help you with it.

Well, most of the inhabitants of the old peshawar city are hindko speakers. Pashtuns mostly live in Hayatabad (a famous residential area of Peshawar) or the villages in Peshawar Valley. I guess you are interested in knowing about Pashtuns from peshawar or perhaps about pashtuns in general.

Demographically and historically, pashtuns have been divided into the high landers and the low landers. Pashtuns of the seven tribal agencies are called the highlanders while rest of the well settled pashtuns are called the Low Landers. While tribal pashtuns have historically been very rigid and have always had a reputation for their fierceness, the low landers have blended well in the society. Geographically, the low landers are again divided in Balochistan and Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. Peshawar valley is amongst the 18, 19 out of the 22 districts of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, where pashtuns are in majority. Amongst these, the districts surrounding peshawar valley, like Nowshera, Mardan, and Peshawar itself, are known to be more developed. People from these areas are thought to be relatively liberal and more educated as compared to their more conservative brethren of Kohat, Bannu and the rest of the southern districts. The fact that usually candidates of religious parties get elected from the southern districts, while candidates from secular/liberal parties usually get elected from Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda and Mardan, strengthens this belief.

About the food, hmm....Pashtuns are very fond of meat, especially mutton (lamb). Namkeen (salty) mutton tikka and mutton karahi are two of the favourites. You will find roadside restaurants like Khyber Charsi Tikka, Shinwari Tikka etc in almost every other corner. Apart from the meat itself, only salt and tomatoes are used in it. As there is no trend of going to KFCs, McDonalds, (I have only come across one KFC in the whole Khyber Pukhtunkhwa), these roadside Mutton Karahi and Mutton Tikka restaurants are very famous amongst the people.

About the language, well, as I have earlier said, the residents of the old city of Peshawar are mostly hindko speaking by origin. Though most of them can speak pashto fluently. The rest of the people in an around Peshawar speak pashto. Around 1.5, 2.0 million or perhaps more Afghan refugees are also living in Peshawar and my estimate is that around a quarter of them speak farsi/darri (Persian).

Anything else?

And oh yes, about the origin of pashtuns, there are three famous theories:
1. They are the decendents of Jews - the lost (13th tribe).
2 They are the decendents of Aryans (from Central Asia).
3. I don't remember (perhaps some arab connection).

Re: People from Peshawar

Re: People from Peshawar

Re: People from Peshawar

When two old Peshawari friends meet , you should see that scene , they wrestle. They call each other names all in good taste though.
Yes women from Peshawar are very pretty. People are very hospitable and caring. They are good friends for life. It is not easy to make a Peshawary person angry . If you manage to make a Peshawary angry you better watch out. They cook very good foods , even the anda tamatar as they call it tastes so damn good at roadside dhabaas.

Re: People from Peshawar

**Nikki that’s a difficult question… Earlier I would have said we were culturally similar just more conservative but now that I’ve lived here a while , I can see the differences.

I used to always hear about Pashtuns being hospitable and wonder how is it different than any other ethnicity but one incident highlights it for me . We were travelling out of Peshawar to our grandparents home and its almost 3 hours away. On the way we stopped on the highway near a village so the Men could pray at a mosque. It was Asr and pretty hot , and a few minutes later we saw these lil children run up to the car and tell us to come to their home. I was surprised but when I accompanied them ( their home, a big mud n clay built home , was on the road just across from where we had parked) …the ladies of the house invited us inside saying , its hot we thought you might want some cold water to refresh yourselves ! They invited us in , gave us water n drinks and and let us pray in their home.****

Its a lil thing , but it struck me how living in the city we have become so cautious of strangers but these people invited us of their own accord . I think that’s what they mean by hospitable. …****

Culturally its still a conservative society but the women are not oppressed as it is made out to be. …most of the customs that are upheld are because the Men care about their women and her dignity contrary to the perception that its out of jaahil-ness or to suppress them !****

Yes there will always be the barbarians in every society and its not unique to any ethnicity !****

Food…We loveeeeeeeee our food especially meats ! Peshawari Karhai or Chapli Kababs to Tikkas and Faluda’s and Kulfas…** **

There are two main dialects in Pashto language.****

****Hard dialect… spoken in areas like Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, Malakand, Dir, Kohat, Paracinar, Jalalabad, Bajawar, Mohmand, Khyber, etc mainly in northern part of Pashto speaking areas. Here the pure Pashto words are pronounced as kh and g not sh and j if the word comprises the sound. As the word for fine is prounced here as kha not sha.

****Soft dialect… spoken in SOUTHERN areas like Bannu, Karak, Waziristan, Baluchistan, Qandahar, etc. Here the above sounds are pronounced as sh and g . fine is sha here.

Re: People from Peshawar

I meant exactly same and people are hospitable and caring.

Re: People from Peshawar

shyen post is really nice n says alot.

I am from Soft dialect but I like to talk to peshwari ppl in their dialect, its funny to do that :D - Same way I like when I try to speak in punjabi.

Pathans are hospitable and like sheyn mentioned a small incident, u ll experience alot like them once you are in NWFP. Reason is the ppl are very simple and innocent. The thought that any stranger can harm them, doesnt pass thru their minds. They will take you to home, give their best place to sit, serve you with all food n fruit that they have at home.
Usually u see pet chickens in most of the homes which are mainly kept for the same reason that in case they have to serve food to any unexpected guests, then they can arrange it by slaughtering the chicken/s. Daal Sabzi khilana innko acha nahin lagta :D

Once a proposal came for my sister, they were from Islamabad. The boy's sister came with my phupo. They stayed with us for a nite. After lunch we knew that the guy was not the one for our sis. My mom was quite disappointed as she was the one over excited about this rishta. kher the next morning after breakfast, the lady n my phupo left. Mom told phupo to tell that lady that we are not interested. Phuppo told her later when they left our home. that lady was surprised n said, oh but i thought i was a yes. Coz they way they treated me, n the izzat they gave me, i thot it was a sure yes. :D

They give high regard to women n their izzat. Even now the marriages are never mix gatherings of men n women.

The sad part about pathans is they are quite behind in education. majority of us still do not think that education is important, specially for gals. I hope we can realise it soon now.

When they come on any zid, its very hard to change their mind. The spoiled ones are hard to bring back on track. banging ur head with a wall would be preferable then advising a pathan who has decided not to listen to anyone.

One thing which u ll hear most while u are with them, is they ll often talk about leaving things on Allah. lol.. not making fun but they really mean it when they say Allah pe chorr do, Allah kher karay ga. they dont say it as a phrase to end the convo with you but they actually believe in it that Allah takes care of everything better than a human can do.

Baaqi i ll add more later.

Re: People from Peshawar

oh man i miss charsi tikkay and kulfa from peshawar saddar. not a big fan of chapli kabab though. but i am going to peshawar in december.

Re: People from Peshawar

Women are rarely see in the Northwest Frontier. A Pathan won't even tell you the names of his wife and mother. To ask him is an insult. It would be like asking him to undress in front of a crowd. "Women are as private to a Pathan as his private parts.

The very existence of women in a Pathan's life is an intimate secret. A Pathan knows women are needed for procreation, but that is an unfortunate and embarrassing fact to him. Among the Pathans, one never sees them, for as soon as a woman's womb begins to expand, she is locked away in the house.

Is this all true? Please correct me if the above is incorrect?

Re: People from Peshawar

the real life experiences with people of peshawar are just wonderful, wish i could visit :frowning:
the peshawari food images on google are totally :yummy:
