Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

Whats the cultural importance of such places (apart from the restriction placed by religion).

I mean what is the psyche behind visiting such places in different cultures. Why this practice is more popular in our part of the world? I think its more than lack of education, as claimed by the majority.

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

I think we tend to go for an easy way to reach Allah. In this case we consider the pirs, and the buzargaan e deen to be a way to salvation. Although we can take some help from some knowledgeable people and also try to at least correct our basics.

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

Do you think that its easy for our people to change their basics? Some people say that these places have provided a mean of catharsis to people in our closed society. The strict orthodox clergy also played a role, which always detested poor people. It was amicable attitude of sufis that attracted more masses than orthodox clergy.

Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

There are 3 different things,

1- people go there because they respect sahib e mazar, recite Quran

2- people who have some kind of hajat, they go there do nazro niyaz and ask from their waseela

3- people who thinks sahib e mazar can fulfill their wishes ( nauzbilah )

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

this is the exact reason that I have heard from my own relatives who go on these ziarats and practice pir/sufism tareeqas

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

I read a news where lot of people started visiting tomb of saddam hussain...so new shia regime put some kind of ban on visiting Saddam's tomb..

Ban? Why?

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

Exactly, but orthodox groups club all categories in 3rd category. In Sindh, I have heard from many people (including my Amma) that peer (Qalandar, Bhit Shah in her case) conveyed my wishes to God. This conveyed (Pujhaiyoon in Sindhi) say all about the belief of people, who are mistaken as considering Sahib e mazar as final authority.

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

Its not easy, its only after the education that people will be able to differentiate between some practices which I'd be a bit cautious about.

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

I don't think that Saddam would be taken as a saint in near future. There are other reasons for visiting mazaraat besides those mentioned by Kinzz in her post. In Sindh university Jamshoro campus, There are graves of ex Vice chancellor, Allama I. I. Qazi and his german wife Elsa Qazi. Many people visit their graves not because they think that they are saints but for paying homage to their love. Mr Qazi attempted suicide just after the death of Elsa Qazi

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

But Saddam is a shaheed according some muslims...and shaheed share same status as saints

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

Which kind of education will work in this case? Education by the strict clergy promoting violence against the people having slightly different religious practices?

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

I dont see any problem in going to mazaars, and praying for the buzurgaan e deen, even praying for ourselves and our family directly from Allah. But some times I see people bowing in front of the tombs, or performing sajdas, holding the the rear part of the tomb where the legs of the buzurg would be, lighting lamps etc. I'd be wary of all these practices.

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

My point is people from these strict group don’t know how to rectify things. They have only one solution. destroying such places and killing those who indulge in such practices. They always forget that Allah never sent azaabs to the people, before providing guidance as to what is right and whats wrong?

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

One way to achieve salvation, to get closer to God .. is to think about the person who is already there, revere them, cherish them, love them. The friends of Prophet Mohammed got closer to God by falling in love with him, their hearts got attracted to his heart, and through that attraction they found their own soul and became conscious of God.

When a person witness God's presence in his life, the river of his soul unites with the ocean of God's light, then death doesnt make a difference .. that person remains alive in the form of noor.

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

Thats not the solution, actually I believe there are extremes on both sides of the fence. One should remain in between and try to avoid those things which dont make sense. The basics are prayers, roza, zakaat, hajj, kalma and haqooq ul ibad. We have made the religion very complex.

Re: Peer, faqeer aur Mazaraat

But giving strict fatwa before knowing whats the reason behind such practices and telling people with justification in soft words will not resolve the problem. Following an ideology is the severe addiction and addicted people can't be convinced until you come up with solid justification and lowering yourself to the level of those people.

We read in Quran the story of Hazrat Ibrahim, who when saw a star shining said that its the god and when it disappeared he said its not god. When he saw moon bigger and having more light than star, he said its the god and when set, he said no it wasn't god. After that when he finally saw sun brightest of all, he told people that its the god and when it was set, he said that was not god. God is the one who created all this.

Do we see clergy following this step by step approach to convey the message?
