PCB not to renew Lawson contract

PCB not to renew Lawson contract

October 20, 2008

The ongoing cull in Pakistan cricket took a high-profile turn today with the announcement by **the PCB that Geoff Lawson’s contract as Pakistan coach will not be renewed after April 2009. **

**“The day his contract expires he will be no more with the Pakistan team,” the newly-appointed PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said at his first press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. “We have no utility for Lawson.” **

Lawson was appointed by Butt’s predecessor Nasim Ashraf in 2007 on a two-year contract. However, his performances since then have been sketchy, though Pakistan reached the final of the Twenty20 World Cup last year and won the Kitply ODI cup this year.

They also lost major series at home to South Africa and away to India. They also failed to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup held in Karachi and Lahore earlier this year.

As a result, Lawson has been the target of intense media criticism almost from the day he arrived and matters haven’t been helped by the run-ins he has had with them. Neither has a serious lack of cricket helped Lawson settle down and gel a team together: this year Pakistan haven’t played a single Test and most of their ODIs have been against minnows such as Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. If Lawson does go in April, he will have effectively been judged over only nine Test matches.

There appears little chance for him to impress until then either. Pakistan have only a three-match ODI series against the West Indies and a Test series against India at home between now and April. Butt explained the decision to keep him until then was purely a financial one.

**“We will suffer a huge financial loss if we terminate his contract now. Since we cannot afford a heavy loss in case we terminate Lawson’s contract now, we will continue with him,” he said. **

**The Pakistan daily Jang reported that the PCB pays Lawson a monthly salary of US$30,000 and in case it terminates the contract, the board has to pay him a salary for three months. **

**However, the change that many other people have also called for doesn’t appear to be as forthcoming. Shoaib Malik, Pakistan’s captain, has been given guarded support by Butt, at least until December this year, according to his original appointment. **

“Malik was appointed for one year, but his performance will be reviewed after his contract ends in December,” Butt said. The chairman said that appointing a young captain over senior players was not a novel idea and most teams with young captains had done well.

“Look at Australia and South Africa, they have relatively young captains despite some seniors in their squads, but they are doing well. For me there’s no senior or junior, it’s the performance that counts,” he said.

Since Butt took over on October 7, a number of senior officials in the board and team management have either resigned or been forced out.

The so called ex coaches like big mouth Javed may become interested for the coachign position.

Re: PCB not to renew Lawson contract

This has been going on for more than a few days now. Last week, there was only a 'whisper' by the now-chairman of PCB of removing Lawson from the position. So is it official from this week that Lawson won't be continuing?

I don't see how Ejaz Butt's move could be anything other than throwing dirty laundry in public.

Re: PCB not to renew Lawson contract

Don't these ppl know how to act diplomatically? I mean c'mon... if the contract is valid until April 2009... wouldn't it be more prudent to bring this issue to the forefront near to that time? or are they simply trying to marginalize Lawson immediately ?!?

This whole dramey baazi by PCB and players alike is really shameful... and their behavior and demeanor comes off as crass and unrefined.

Re: PCB not to renew Lawson contract

Stupid new chairman !

He said it again today while talking to reporters that “Jeff Lawrson team k leyee BAY-KAAR hain” :smack:

I am sure he has some personal score to settle. I dont think PCB chairman can be this stupid …

Re: PCB not to renew Lawson contract

This is really rude, what more pathetic could it be. Now they think that Lawson will work even better for his remaining months.. He would most probably be seeing chatting on the internet and drinking in hotel bar.

, I remember when Chapel showed his middle finger to media/public, BCCI actually backed him up and saved his arse to some extent.

Apparently Uncle Butt is leaking some inside stuff :hehe:. Regardless of whoever is in administration, they all share a common beemari of begging for some attention.

Butt reveals possible IPL-ICL merger

Butt’s public comments, of what appear to have been private discussions, are sure to stir up a hornet’s nest within the ICC and its member bodies in coming days.

Re: PCB not to renew Lawson contract

Looks like Butt uncle is from the family of that WI investigator who overseen Woolmer's case. He used to have 1 press conference every day :)

Wow.

Read this article too:
The new PCB chairman Ijaz Butt has said he was surprised that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh did not openly support Pakistan as the hosts of the 2009 Champions Trophy when the issue was raised at the ICC’s board meeting in Dubai last week. (CricInfo)
He is leaking stuff from official ICC meetings. When was the last time ICC went public with what happened behind closed doors? They tell the media what to say. Has any ICC official come out after the meeting is over and publicly discussed the private affairs?

i wanna remain optimistic abt new chairman…
so i wont visit this thread :snooty:

‘Useless’ Lawson to stay Pak coach: PCB](http://cricketnext.in.com/news/useless-lawson-to-stay-pak-coach-pcb/34952-13.html)

First impression is the last impression. Butt Bhai jaan had his   butt uncle

The new chairman lives up to his name. What an absolute disaster!!!

To call your national coach "useless" reflects more on the chairman than the coach.

Lawson has been very passionate in pleading Pakistan's case in the west about perceived safety/security issues etc. In interview after interview he has consistently maintained what a wonderful place Pakistan is and how much he has enjoyed living there

To oust him in such a manner is utterly low-class. I am sure Lawson can find much more lucrative and less stressful coaching jobs, especially in the IPL.

Re: PCB not to renew Lawson contract

useless administrator/administration...
useless coach...
useless team...

useless post :)

Pakistan team doesn't need a coach.

they were the 1st one to introduced the coach (if i m not wrong)

Did they really ? So they were the innovators - vow.

They can be the first one not to have a coach as it won't make a difference.

However, I think next coach will be a Pakistani, possible canidates:

  • Big mouth Javed - will continue with his unique coaching style by waving from the balcony

  • Mohsin Khan - didn't rate Lawson as a player. May be he should be given a chance to see if he can make a difference to the jokers.

  • Maulvi Mushtaq

  • Waqar Younis

  • Wasim Akram

Lawson in the dark over future

Osman Samiuddin

October 21, 2008

Ijaz Butt, the newly-appointed chairman of the PCB, announced yesterday that Geoff Lawson’s contract as Pakistan coach will not be renewed, but** Lawson himself has not been told anything by the chairman.** Nevertheless, Lawson is getting on in the immediate future with “business as usual.”

**In the two weeks since he was appointed, in fact, Butt has had no communication with Lawson at all. Most tellingly, the chairman met with the captain Shoaib Malik and the temporary chief selector Saleem Jaffar on Saturday but not with Lawson. **

Unsurprisingly, **the development has increased speculation that Lawson might leave before his contract finishes, though understandably he was reluctant to comment on the matter. “I have not had a meeting with or indeed heard a single word from the Chairman since he was appointed,” he told Cricinfo. **

“At this stage it is business as usual for all the coaching staff as we prepare for the Pentangular Cup, the West Indies ODI series [in Abu Dhabi] and give players tasks to perform during the Pentangular Cup as we also begin preparation for the India Test series in January.”

Though Butt said Lawson will leave after April 2009, the original contract he signed runs up to August 2009. If that is the case, then it means Lawson is likely to be at the helm through the India series in January 2009, the Twenty20 World Championships and the tour to Sri Lanka next summer. Favourable results in any of those contests would raise questions about why the decision to not retain him was taken so early.

**One senior player also raised the possibility of the changed dynamics of the player-coach relationship and its likely effect on the team. “Knowing that he is leaving will change how players respond to him and deal with him,” the player told Cricinfo. Maybe they could have taken the decision closer to the time, or told him privately," **

Butt was unusually harsh on Lawson’s performance in his comments, concluding ultimately that “we [PCB] have no utility for Lawson.” The reason cited for keeping him on till April was financial: Butt said the board would suffer a “huge financial loss” if the contract was terminated immediately.

Great professionalism shown by Mr Butt by not communicating with Lawson. May be he has something personal against him.

Isn’t this so rude of him not to communicate with the coach. Is this the sort of things which are likely to come from the Chairmain?

It would have been better to have a one to one with Lawson and listen to his side of story to the reasons why the jokers can’t perform, draw his conclusions than may be open his big mouth nearer the time.

Even though I agree with PCB's decision of not renewing his contract, the way Butt sahab is dealing with this issue is totally unprofessional.

Lawason hasn't done anything out of the ordinary. Look at his relationship with the media and the players/PCB. Woolmer was always on the top of everything, this guy is getting big money for nothing.

i seriously have no probs. wid them .. (unless they keep them selves away frm politics)

Re: PCB not to renew Lawson contract

i m for wasim akram or waqar younis.
Saeed anwar cant do that now i think.
