PCB Constitution Update

New PCB constitution will be implemented in 14 days: Ashraf

KARACHI: The President’s office will issue a notification regarding the approval of Pakistan Cricket Board’s new constitution today, PCB chief Nasim Ashraf said on Thursday.

The PCB chairman informed ‘The News’ that he received a letter from the Law Ministry regarding the approval of the amended constitution on Thursday adding that a formal notification should be issued today (Friday).

“I’m quite sure that a notification regarding the approval of the constitution will be issued tomorrow after which we will start taking measures to implement it,” Ashraf said.

President Pervez Musharraf, PCB’s chief patron, approved the draft of the new constitution earlier this month.

**Ashraf said that it would take around 10 to 14 days for the PCB to implement the new constitution.

“We will try to get the constitution implemented by the end of this month,” said Ashraf, who has been under criticism from various quarters for his failure to get a new constitution in place.

According to the new constitution, a new executive board will replace the existing PCB ad-hoc committee as the new decision-making body. The board will include representatives of the regions, former Test cricketers and technocrats.**

Ashraf said that the presidents of the 11 regional bodies will be asked to hold a meeting to nominate their representatives in the executive board. He said that the regions will have five representatives in the board.

Ashraf said that the PCB chairman will have the authority to nominate former Test cricketers and technocrats for places in the 15-member executive board. He did not rule out the inclusion of a couple of existing members of the ad-hoc committee in the executive board.

Ashraf said that once the executive board is approved by the chief patron, it will meet for the first time at the end of this month or early in October.

Lets hope that this time we are not hearing new topi bahanas from PCB.

Re: PCB Constitution Update

I still think that PCB, being a professional money-making enterprise, should be run by top-notch professional managers. I'm sure there are plenty of Ivy League (or IBA/LUMS) graduates in Pakistan with a proven track record of success in managing large organizations. Why not hire one of them?

Why rely on ex-cricketers, ex-doctors, ex-generals, ex-diplomats who may know nothing about running a company?

Re: PCB Constitution Update

You are 100% right but Gen Musharaf is not worried about Pakistan cricket future or future of Wapda or PTC or any organization rather he is worried about having loyal people around him, and who could follow his instructions without any questions. Based on this criteria and may be also pleasing his Doctor brother in chicago, he picked a doctor for one of the wealthiest organization in Pakistan, where there is no accountability. A PCB chair could announce $20000 each just for winning a match or could announce any renumeration just for playing in Pakistan team and not going to ICL.

Similarly, if he has any business or not you could see him in Pakistan dressing room whenever Pakistan visit decent country such as England, Carribean, Australia etc, so he used these as opportunities for his honeymoon. Similarly, he also gives opportunities to his doctor or college friends to make some money in the form of salaries, bonuses and TA/Da for trips by appionting translator for the team (PJ Mir), by appionting doctors Dr. Shahid Malik to accompany the team (reason unknown), may be missed trip to England, sending a battalion to Australia to see a lab etc ect just few examples.

So they all knew all this and just loot the money. Once PCB go bankrupt like Pakistan Hockey Association then no one would like to become chair of it.

Also approves the names of Governing Board members

KARACHI: President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday retained Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Nasim Ashraf for a three-year term apart from approving six ‘technocrats’ and two former Test cricketers for inclusion in a new PCB Governing Board.

According to an official notification Ashraf, who took over as PCB chairman last September, will continue heading the Board that embraces a democratic set-up next month after almost eight years of ad-hocism.

“I hope to continue the voyage of good governance and transparency in this new set-up for the betterment of our cricket,” Ashraf told ‘The News’. “I’m honoured that the President has kept faith in me and I will try my best to serve the game during my tenure,” he added.

Musharraf, who is the patron-in-chief of the PCB, also stamped his seal of approval on the names of six technocrats and two ex-Test cricketers, who will be a part of a 15-man Governing Board under the PCB’s new constitution.

Former Pakistan captain Intikhab Alam and Ijaz Butt are the two former Test cricketers on the Governing Board which will have Ali Raza, Munir Hafeez, Moin Afzal, Aslam Sanjrani, Farooq Rehmatullah and Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Yousuf as members.

The PCB will later announce the names of the five representatives of its various regions and an official representing the affiliated departments, who will complete the Governing Board headed by the Board’s chairman.

The PCB chief said that he would try to convene the inaugural meeting of the PCB Governing Board on either November 9 or 10 at the Board’s headquarters in Lahore.

“I would want to have the inaugural meeting as soon as possible and am hoping that all of the Governing Board’s members will attend it,” said Ashraf.

He said that during the next three years, his focus will remain on promoting cricket at the grassroots level.

“We have to have a solid base at the schools and under-19 levels if we are to excel at the international level in the coming years,” he said. “We are investing in grassroots cricket at the moment and will intensify our efforts in the coming years so that we can produce world class players for the future.”

He said that Pakistan need a solid bench strength if they are to compete with top class teams like world champions Australia.

Ashraf added that another important goal for the PCB is to take concrete measures to ensure that Pakistan raise the best possible combination for the 2011 World Cup. Pakistan are to co-host the World Cup with India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

“The 2011 World Cup is the most important assignment for us and we will take all possible steps to raise a squad capable of winning the title.”

Pakistan, the 1992 World Cup champions, have flopped miserably in the last two editions of the tournament held in South Africa (2003) and the West Indies (2007).

Ashraf almost lost his job as the PCB chairman after this year’s World Cup debacle and it was only after Musharraf threw his weight behind him that he was able to keep what is counted among the most sought-after positions in Pakistan sports.
