PCB Coach Geoff Lawson terminated

Cricinfo staff

October 24, 2008

Geoff Lawson has been removed as coach of Pakistan with immediate effect. He will be given three months advance salary.

Laswon had a meeting with the chairman earlier this afternoon, at which it was decided that a decision would be given to him tomorrow

A PCB spokesperson told Cricinfo, “Geoff Lawson has been removed as coach of Pakistan. As per his clause he has been given three months salary.”

:hmmm:
So PCB had enough money …

Well, they probably got a nice deal, you never know. Instead of paying his salary fo the next 6 months (approx. $200K) they opted for three months. They can now pay that amount which they saved to someone they like.

The bottom line is that this issue was dealt in the worst possible manner. Once again PCB successfully managed to continue their tradition of ending a coach’s tenure on a bad note.

Welcome Miandad as Pakistan’s next coach for the 4th time.

So who would u like to see as next coach (am askin this question to every 1) .......

Butt sahib deserves a big kick up the butt for the crass and shameful manner in which he has dealt with the whole issue. It was utterly unprofessional to say the least with the chairman changing his statements each day.

freaking bakwas ......

Butt is settling scores with people. How can he fire-hire without even having a review process and other people involved? Really unprofessional ...least to say

What is this? What is all this, unbelievable! Removed a national coach on what basis??? Are you kidding me with this news? If national foreign coaches are to be fired like this in the middle of the road, it is nothing but revengeful and if getting rid of people was this easy, why humiliate him in the media, burn all bridges, issue wrong statements which obviously have no justification and logic behind it and then do all this?

The same guy who leaked the official ICC memorandum and have said zilch about improving the security situation of the country so Pakistan can start hosting home games. This all could have easily been done behind-the-doors in a proper manner. At least give us the benefit of the doubt, chief!

Re: PCB Coach Geoff Lawson terminated

Ayite breaking news.

Javed miandad is not running for coach but he is running for some higher post in the governing body. (eg chief selector or deputy chairman)

and for the coach Aamir Sohail and intikhab Alam are being considered. A minority is also supporint Aqib Javed as his performance has been fabulous for many consective years for under 19 team, won 2 world cups and many trophies.

m totally against Intikhab Alam, i would go for Aamir Sohail or Aqib Javed.

coz his personal opinion matters the most.. dont you remember?

hmmm

This guy is acting like a moron. Why didn’t he let him finish his term?
Anyway, what’s done is done. Hopefully we won’t see Miandad or Alam as coach. As coachwaan, may be but not as coach. :smokin2:

Lawson, nice bloke but Pak cricket is way tooo messedup for any one to be in.

he was brought in as coach when both him and Dave whatmore met with the team and Dave appeared as guy who would make lazy a$$ pakistanis work too hard and wouldnt care if you have scored 1600 runs previous years or had hit 200+ sixes or can bowl 10 balls over 150 KMPH per year, he would treat you all equal. That didnt set well with Pakistani players and they wanted someone like lawson, who they thought wouldnt be such demanding coach.

I honestly dont think lawson did anything terrible as coach. while he was coach Pak did

*T20 WC *= Runnersup, just one misjugdement from misbah

ODI series with SA = Evenely poised series and Afridi tries to be maverick and gets out while he could easily taken Pak to Victory by playing like someone who has 11 years of International experience.

India ODI series= it was 3-2 to india and not 4-1, one game played more sensibaly and could have won that series too.

India test series= couldnt get indians out twice to have any chance to win the games, had 50% fit akhter in team.

*ODI's with ZIM and BD *= dont mean anything

DLF: Won it

**ASIA CUP: **one bad game against SL.

Toronto T20: SHOAIB

Pakistan's problem is not a foreign coach but un-professionalism in PCB and the players. in 90's that un-professionalism got over shadowed by extreme brilliance on field. unfortunately, Not any more.

Had to show up for this one.

Setting aside board politics for a minute, its hilarious to me how "coaches" of the national cricket team are treated in India and Pakistan (I am not sure about Sri Lanka).

-The Cricket Coach (in India/Pak) has no real authority over team selection except in an advisory mode.

-The Cricket Coach (in India/Pak) has no real authority over tactical or strategic decisions (e.g. when a declaration is made, whether to bat/bowl after toss) except in an advisory mode (to the Captain).

-The Cricket coach is not allowed to show overt displeasure at a player or a performance or say anything remotely "negative" of the team in the media....he is immediately pulled up by the board and hounded by the media (e.g. Gary Kirsten has already been shown the "rule book" a couple of times by the BCCI)

So...the job of the "coach" in the desi system really comes down to conducting practice sessions and helping players with technique (batting , bowling or fielding).

And yet, when the team loses, the Cricket Coach is first on the FIRING LINE as if he had the authority of an International Soccer Coach (who has almost unlimited control over his team - including barking instructions from the sidelines during a game).

It is not as if "foreign coaches" like Lawson, Chappel, Kirsten don't know this....but the money on offer is too tempting to resist for them....even if a "firing" or "resignation" is how their stint would most likely end. (Only John Wright came out unscathed in recent memory - and that was only because he kept a very low profile and did not stir the political setup within the team or the board)

Re: PCB Coach Geoff Lawson terminated

I expect lawson to be next coach for either Hyderabad or Bangalore in IPL.

^On a related note, I feel that IPL won't be the same "dollar extravaganza" that it was last year.

Recessionary economy, plunging stock markets and dwindling corporate profits means India Inc will probably think twice before throwing $650,000 at Robin Uthappa !!!

There is already a murmur that the Hyderabad Team owners are looking to sell their team.

^ Welcome back .. mubarak ho Aus kee kutt lagh gaee :)

The new administration, one board official told Cricinfo, felt the need to remove all traces of the Nasim Ashraf regime, a purge they have pursued vigorously since taking over. **The other reason is likely to cause considerable friction. **

**“Lawson had not even attempted to meet the chairman even once since he took over,” said the official. “We felt it reflected poorly on his attitude that he didn’t want to meet the chairman and explain what he wanted and where he wanted the team to go.” **

When told that Lawson was upset that the chairman had not made any effort to meet him, the official asked simply: “Why should it be that way round? He is the chairman. The coach should seek him out.”

The three-month compensation to Lawson, Cricinfo believes, is in the region of US$50,000, a figure the board felt was ultimately justifiable.

**But this figure is likely to be a bone of considerable contention. It is reliably learnt that the letter of termination sent to Lawson, with a cheque for the compensation amount stapled to the back, has been returned. The amount, say sources close to Lawson, is “thousands and thousands of dollars short of what it should be.” **

These sources allege that other terms of the termination clause in the contract have not been fulfilled, increasing the likelihood that legal action may be the only option if the two parties fail to resolve the matter otherwise. Lawson is also said to be annoyed mostly with the way his departure has been handled.

“He is upset not so much that he was sacked but that he was treated with an absolute lack of respect and common sense by the PCB,” the source said. “This is unlikely to be the end of the matter.”

in my opinion Unble butts needs a big kick on his rear end which will permanently put him outside his office. There should be absolutely no justification for this unprofessional and unethical behaviour. I can foresee more disasters coming up under his chairmanship. We have experienced previous PCB heads messing things up but when it comes to some one making an impression in such a short time, Uncle Butt takes the cake.

Welcome new bunch of jokers and their spokesman in town. Excuse me it was YOU who was firing all cylinders from day one you took over. Have you tried contacting coach and asked for the performance review? I guess butt uncle is very TAPA howa keun k Lowsan did not licked his boots (in street language “utheeey nahi”) …

Re: PCB Coach Geoff Lawson terminated

^ I understand that the PCB Chairman said a few days ago that the board would suffer "huge financial loss" if they sacked Lawson immediately.

So are they okay with the "huge financial loss" now ?

remember:

whatever butt uncle said before (even a min ago) is always his personal opinion
