PCB Chairman resigns - says "can't handle politics anymore"

The Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia has resigned following the country’s disgraceful defeat against Australia at Sharjah.

In the resignation submitted to President Pervez Musharraf last night, Zia said “I could not handle the politics of the game and as such have tendered resignation. Enough is enough. I have done everything to lift the spirit of the game”.

“I am shaken by the margin of the defeat”, The News quoted Zia as saying.

Pakistan just managed a total of 111 runs in the two innings and lost the match within two days.

The 59 made by Pakistan in their first innings was their lowest-ever in Test cricket. But they sunk to a new low after being bundled out for 53 yesterday to plunge to an innings and 193 run defeat.

This is the first of many heads to roll. Next should be the captain itself. If he has any deceny left in him he should resign forthwith, instead of asking his players to forget what happened during the second test.

who knows this defeat might even be good for pakistan in the long run..i hope so :)

well guys this is really sad!!
Gen Zia was an hoenst man trying to lift Pak cricket!

Jattey jattey ye bhi player politics ko hi ilzam dey giya :D Its his own fault I think, he never handled the affairs well. At one time he would say onething at another he would be saying something totally different. For me he was never a good chairman, I just hope Mushy accepts his resignation. Lagta hey kissi aur general ney shour daa diya tha key ub PCB ka chairman bunney ki uss ki bari hey :D

its amzing that india has this news while no other cricket/news site has said a word about it…

indian media ke bhee kia kehne… :hehe:

Waisey cricketers ney wo kur diya jo mulk mey koi aur na kur saka Fauj ko agey laga liya :rotfl: am kinda proud of them

he was the biggest ullu ka patha and he deserves to go. the other fool who has no shame is waqar. but waqar will never resign. he is as shameful as anyone can imagine saying to his team 'forget what happened' the moron. does he think anyone can ever forget what they all did in the test matc? the shame they brought to the colors of Pakistan?

waqar will have to be fired and tossed out on his butt along with rashid latif, imran nazir, abdul razzaq.

**Top Pakistani officials resign after test debacle **

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The director of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and chairman General Tauqir Zia have resigned after Saturday’s second test debacle in Sharjah where Australia swept to an innings and 198-run victory.

“We handed in our resignation last night,” Chishty Mujahid told Reuters by telephone from Karachi.

Pakistan were heavily criticised by local newspapers on Sunday after being dismissed for a match total of just 112 runs – the fourth worst in test history.

Their first innings of 59 on Friday was a record low for the country in a test, but that mark lasted for only one day. After Australia had made 310 in reply, Pakistan were skittled for just 53 in their second innings.

The crushing defeat, which gave Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-test series, followed a disappointing spell for the Pakistan team in both test and one-day cricket.

On Saturday, Mujahid had suggested injuries and a lack of experience were factors behind the heavy Sharjah reverse.

“It is very disappointing… and I’m being polite here,” he told Reuters. “But that’s how cricket is.”

“You saw the same young batsmen scare the caps off of the Australians in Colombo. I can’t think of any reason why they should have collapsed the way they did in Sharjah but I’d put it down to a combined lack of experience.”

Saturday’s defeat in the United Arab Emirates prompted an editorial in a leading English-language daily blaming the PCB for not doing enough in recent years to encourage young talent.

Pakistani cricket is not only facing a crisis on the pitch.

Security concerns in the south Asian state of 140 million have led to a string of touring sides refusing to play in Pakistan, denying fans the opportunity to see their team and starving the PCB of millions of dollars in revenue.

Pakistan has been hit by a wave of anti-Western and anti-Christian violence blamed on extremist Islamic groups angered by President Pervez Musharraf’s decision to back the U.S.-led “war on terror”.

Where the hell politics comes here? Yeah right, from Indian link!

The Game Responds:

*Atleast the man was trying; the real assclown that needed to go was Waqar Younis, not Tauqeer Zia. People, That Is All.*

I often wonder why we, as a nation, react so shanefully aftrer defeats...
I agree this is the most pathetic performance from our team but when players play the next match, they have to get rid of the previuos match's after effects! One cannot focus if keeps wondering about how shameful that defeat was! And Waqar was right in saying that the boys should forget what happend in this test match! No Doubt they will tka esome points from this match but this match should not mark the end of thw world for them, they have to move forward!

But Sherlock my friend, cursing these players and calling them names isnt going to get rid of your or any other fan's frsutration!
Lets pray Pakistani team gets out of this trouble soon :)

i think it's very unfortunate that Tauqir has resigned. i mean, what can u ask from such an unexperienced team??? they r all inexperienced batsmen, and look at the opposition.

We pakistanis r very impatient. we want immediate results. WHY?? Look at how long the current West Indies team took to rebuild. as a matter of fact, it's still rebuilding.

And just recently SA received a drubbing by the australians. We didn't c any heads roll in SA.
GUYS. PAKISTAN TEAM IS IN A REBUILDING PROCESS. gone r the days with the 2W's and a strong batting lineup. It'll take time.
Give the youngsters some time. Give good cricketeres like Taufiq Umar, Misbah, Imran Farhat, and Hasan Raza a long time in international cricket to prove their worth. But NO!! if they underperform in the first few matches of their career they r sacked. Come on man. this is not guli/mohalla cricket.

I always wonder why other teams give new cricketers such a long run in international cricket. But in Pakistan if the youngsters fail in the first few matches they r sacked and forgotten about.
Give them time to get used to international cricket man.

Well said DT, but I don't think they should be given enough chances like Imran Nazir had, who scores more than 5 runs every 3 matches. I say we need a new captain but similiar team, what Pakistani young batsmans needs is atleast one experienced batsman on the side, I'm not talking about bring back the old guys, someone like ANwar and Youhana should always be in the team, so the young one can count on them.

He should never have been in that position to start with. Army should stick to what it does best, we need cricket specialists for these positions.

Waqar isn't objective enough and for me the fact that he failed to accept his shre of the blame and lumped it all on other senior players following the ICC disaster showed he lacks man-management skills.

I thought Tauqeer Zia did a good job as the chairman, he has been around for a while, he did very well to groom the youngsters but I think the best thing he did was helping Shoaib get through his crisis. He also handeled the match fixing fiasco really nicely, so I wouldn't say he did a bad job.

World Cup is near. We are still learning :hehe:

Waqar, Pybus Back Tauqir

SHARJAH (UAE), Oct 13: The resignation of PCB chairman Tauqir Zia would not help cricket in his country, Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis said Sunday. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, but his resignation is sad news. I really don’t think the chairman should take the blame for our defeat,” Waqar said.

**“Since I don’t have more details I can’t comment further.” **

Pakistan lost the second Test after making a total of just 112 runs, the fourth worst in history.

Pakistan’s new coach Richard Pybus was also concerned at the timing of Tauqir’s resignation.

“I really am at a loss to say anything on this subject, but yes, this development could have a disruptive effect on our preparations for the third Test,” Pybus said.

**“I don’t think by taking any reactive actions to our defeat is going to help this team in the long run.” **

Pybus insisted that the defeat had to be looked at in the proper perspective.

“I would ask people back in Pakistan to keep in perspective the age of the players, the amount of Tests they have played and look at our opposition,” Pybus told a press conference Sunday.

He pointed out that only recently the second best team in the world, South Africa, were hammered by Australia, losing five matches in six Tests.

“And that South Africa side was much stronger than ours. So it’s a learning curve for our players, they are learning the literacy of Test cricket,” he added.

**"Give us time so that we can identify the players - this cannot be an overnight thing.

“I have been with the boys for just over two weeks and we need time to address to weaknesses. It needs three to six months.” **

Pybus also disclosed that he had spoken to Tauqir Sunday morning.

“I gave my perspective on the defeat,” he said. **"It was a very disappointing performance but we can take positives from that - we have started to identify some players who can play Test cricket.

"I told (him) about where we are now and that I need the opportunity to work with the boys. I told him I am very confident that the future is very bright for Pakistan cricket. **

**“But we need to do things patiently.” **

Meanwhile, the Pakistan cricket team management turned down a request from their Australian counterparts to start the third and final Test a day earlier then the scheduled Oct 19.

Organisers confirmed that the Australian manager Steve Bernard had spoken to the Pakistan management and match referee Clive Lloyd to find if it was possible.

But Lloyd informed him that the request had to be made at board level.

However, the Pakistan team management is not in favour of starting the Test a day early and this has been conveyed to the Australians.-Reuters

agreed Umair!!
he foight his team's case very bravley in match fixing saga ane shoaib episode....
m really sad to see him go coz he has done many positive things in the cricket board!

One thing I don't get about Waqar, when the senior players perform badly, he says they are too old and can't handle too much cricket. When the young players perform badly he says they are too young and don't have much experience, then what kind of player does he want.
Young or old, you are suppose to be responsible, and play good cricket, look at Sehwag, Kaif, Yuvraj, how long have they been around, but look at how good cricket they are playing.

I dont think Tauqir Zia did anything for Pak Cricket. If Chopping and Changing after every loss is a great job then yes he did that very well. He didn't handle a single issue properly - Be it Match fixing, Moin's Captaincy, Shoaib's problem, Saqi's problem, India along with other countries not coming to pakistan or any other issue for that matter.

It is good that he has quit PCB - I just hope that a former cricketer like Imran Khan or Javed Miandad is made PCB chief. Pakistan has the talent and we saw it in Sri lanka match. It's just that they need to be given time to settle into the team.

Waqar needs to go - Saqi needs to be given a more Important Role (may be the Vice Captain ) in TEAM and he needs to be told that. Moin must come back - Rashid is too meek and timid cricketer to play at the International level.
