The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has banned Shahid Afridi from next month’s Sharjah Cup that will be played between April 1 and 10 and will also be participated in by Sri Lanka and South Africa. He has also been fined 50 per cent of his Indian game match fee in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003. Shahid Afridi was found guilty of sledging two Indian batsmen – Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar – and umpire David Shepherd. The decision was taken on Wednesday.

“We received an official complaint from the International Cricket Council (ICC) supported with evidence. The players were told prior to their departure for South Africa that no indiscipline will be tolerated. Unfortunately, Shahid Afridi breached the players Code of Conduct and had to be penalized”, a spokesman of the PCB said.

Shahid Afridi is, however, allowed to represent his team in the ongoing National Bank Patron’s Cup one-day tournament.

It was also decided in the two-day meeting, chaired by Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Lt Gen Tauqir Zia, that the team and the management for Sharjah Cup will be announced on March 24.

“The selection committee of Wasim Bari decided that the players be allowed to participate in the NBP Patron’s Cup one-day tournament matches between March 16 and 22 so that they have a fair idea about the fitness and form of the players. All the players have been advised to play in these matches”, the spokesman said.

“No decision on the future of the senior players has been taken as the selectors are still in discussion stages and would only finalize the 15-man team once they watch the matches.”

The PCB has also not decided about the captain of the team. “Let the selectors first submit a squad of 15 and after that only the captain will be picked”, PCB Chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia said.

He added: “We don’t want to jump the gun as we still have time in our hand before the Sharjah Cup. We are in a stage where a lot of thinking has to be put in our decisions before they are made or announced.”

Besides the selection committee, the team management of the World Cup squad submitted their reports and apprised the chairman in detail. Pakistan captain Waqar Younis, contrary to media reports, also met in the evening and was not kept “waiting in the corridors” of the Gaddafi Stadium.

Allah tera shukr, kissi bahanay say to gaya

/\ :hehe: Ground him for sometime now, its been long due.

Well the Indians did us some favour after all.

I just hope that youngsters in his abscence perform well making it difficult for him to return to the team.

:rotfl:

We are good neighbours.

Good decision :k: He should be punished.

I think the match referee missed another violation committed by Shahid. He was sledging Moahammad Kaif also.

Looks like ICC initiated the complaint. But, I have seen a lot more sledging by other players that went un-noticed. For example, when Chris Cairns got out against Aus, Ponting rushed towards him and said something. Cairns then stopped by Umpire Bucknor on his way to pavillion and said something. WHy did that go without reprimandation?

Poor Shahid, he is a die hard cricketer and gets punished because PCB is taking this opportunity to look responsible. The fact of the matter is that PCB is in shambles right now because of it's own policies in selection of the team and what not.

I agree gunguy. even in Pak vs. Aust. match there was such incident. But many players get away. Bot some get caught, like Afridi.
I don't think it is going to be good for the team now that Afridi is banned. Afridi is not the only one who played poorly; Waqar, Inzi, Shoib, Youhana, Younus.

I think fg has a point. If sledging is going to be cracked down on it has to be across the board. I know the Aussies have been doing it for a while now and I haven't heard any reports that they've changed their colours.

Well it normally depends on if the umpire or tv umpire catches you commiting the act, most of times players getaway with such things.
Aussies are the best in the world at that, they sledge players when no one is looking in least likely situations.

If action is going to be taken whoever is responsible then Wasim would go too. Afridi mainly got the boot because it was officially requested by the ICC. The administration is not sure what to do since most old players are refusing to retire while the public pressure is to include new talented players. They just saw an opportunity and got rid of the dead weight.

what about Zaheer Khan walking up to Youhana and giving him something to think about Indian style? I don't condone sledging and Afridi should be banned for his game if not sledging anyways.

But why the hell was Zaheer Khan bitching at Youhana. Youhana even avoided eye contact with him (he's such a nice guy). It's funny how much the Indians whine when they get told but they go Aussie on us when it's their turn.

I say good on Afridi and he should sledge even more.

*******s.

They don't need any excuses to boot him out, I would think his failures are a good enough reason.

Guys cool down, you are missing one point. Sledging yes, amongst players yes, but you ** don't sledge the umpire** that is what our hero did. Read the report.

the only thing Gen. Zia had was a spine and if he's going to get bullied around then he must leave. He already doesn't have a brain but not standing up for our players is the last straw.

So, what if he sledged the umpire? If he is banned for sledging the umpire, then why is it being mentioned that he sledged the Indians?

I wish I were the head of PCB, put all these ****ing goras in their place.

Well, in that case Umpire Shep should also be banned. He sledged Waqar Younis in the match against Australia. Those of you who saw the incident, it looked like hostile seldging from Shep. He could have said it in a nice manner too.

And lets not forget the reply from Andy Symonds, who came down the pitch to reply to Waqar.
Who in the world is stupid enough to bowl beamers on purpose, it was an honest mistake from Waqar.

what the hell is sledging? all the definitions in the dictionary don't indicate what this might be about.

TUMS, sledging is abusive language intended to make the opposition angry. Aussies call it "mental disintegration". To explain better, a real life example is in order. Australian quick Glen McGrath was bowling to Zimbabwean Eddo Brandes. Brandes is a big guy. McGrath after getting hit for a four, came down the pitch and said, "Hey Eddo, why are you so fat?". To this Eddo Brandes replied, "Because everytime I f*** your wife, she gives me a biscuit"!. Hearing this, even the Australian players in the slips couldn't stop laughing. Now, this is sledging.

Shahid Afridi's case is a little different. I am sure he must have called some Maa behan ki gaali to Shep when he turned down his appeal. They say, match referee or ICC didn't take notice of it as they didn't know what was said. But later a complaint was filed (most likely by the Indians with English translation of the Afridi's jewels of wisdom hurled at the 62 year old Shep). So, that's what might have happened.
