I was wondering if there’s any better software (ofcourse freeware) to lock certain files on the computer that can only be opened by a password. For example, if I don’t want certain documents to be readable/viewable to other users using my PC, is there any software that can put a lock on that file? So when you click to open it, it asks you for a password and it opens the file only if you enter a valid password, otherwise it doesn’t open it.
Right now I am using winguard pro 2005. It’s alright but you have to encrypt/decrypt the file by right clicking on it rather than just right click and maybe “Lock the file” or something like that? Any suggestions?
I have just discovered one thing. No need to install any crap software.
Creat a new folder somewhere on your hard drive.
When you name it hold down "Alt" and press "0160" this will create and invisible space so it will apper as if it has no name. Then right click in and select "Properties" select the tab "coustimize" and select "change icon" scroll along and you should see a few blank spaces click on any one and click ok when you hav saved the settings the folder will be invisible to hide all your personal files.
Put all your personel files in that folder.
I think this is the best way to hide personal files.
Sh3ry: The ALT trick worked in Win98 but doesn't work in the newer operating systems.
Shikra: Why don't you create a guest account on your PC with limited privileges and let everyone else use this account. If your HDD is NTFS formatted then you can easily protect your documents by right clicking on 'My Documents' and selecting the option: 'Make this folder private'. This way, other users will not be able to view your documents. BUT bear in mind, your HDD has to be NTFS formatted for this option to work.
I am all for this option. I have done it on my account and my folder is invisible to everyone, they can see my name, but can’t access the contents.
Nos, its not important to give guest access to everyone. I have been through it, so I m talking with exp here, shikra can manage the accounts and give them power user or back up user privileges, if not admin. Sometimes, other ppl wants to dl stuff and just because its limited privileges account they can’t. And that creates a chaos.
^ Oii smarty pants ... I did not say give 'guest access' ... I said create a guest account and grant 'limited' privileges [limited user]. And when I said 'create' a guest account I did not mean the built-in guest account ... else I would have said 'enable' the guest account.
hmm ... okay I admit I shouldn't have used the word 'guest' ... just 'create a user account...' should have worked ... :p
Lajawab bhai Thanks for the link. Seems to be an interesting program, lets try.
Others Well Yes I know I can limit the access and all that, but I was wondering if I could put password on it so even when I put a file on floppy/flash drive and lose it, no one can open the file. I used to have something like that when I had windows 95 All I needed to do was just right click on the file, click on “lock it” and tadaa!
Shery The idea is neat but what happens when you go to folder options and select “view hidden files” and then come back to the folder and press CTRL + A? The file/folder is selected :rotato:
EDIT: I just realized, after you hide the file and all that, and you press CTRL A to select all, the stupid things gives you a warning message saying there are so many hidden files in this folder Is there any way to disable that?
Coolbreeze, nice point :k: Also, as I mentioned earlier, if you try to select all by pressing CTRL A, it will give you a warning message that there so many hidden files in this folder.
