...Password Protection...

Re: …Password Protection…

Shikra, thank your friend Mcirosoft (and me :)) for the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sharedaccess/overview.mspx

The Windows Restrictions tool lets you:

Restrict access to Windows system utilities
**•****Prohibit access to important data**
Prevent users from running unauthorized software
Simplify the Start menu

Re: ...Password Protection...

^ that tool is still in beta stage ... and I wouldn't trust an MS app till it was atleast a year old :p

Re: ...Password Protection...

Kaleem bhai Thanks for the link. I've saved the file as I can't download it and install it at this point because you must have service pack II for it. I really don't want to update to service pack II but most programs now require it, I guess I have no other option. And a lot of people don't trust microsoft and think it collects more information that it tells you and invades the privacy, I don't know how true that is. Interesthing though that when I was installing this program, macafee popped up saying a "suspecious script is running, should I block it?" hmmmmmm

Re: ...Password Protection...

Shikra, if MS really wanted to get your info, they already have it. Look, MS is no different than any business out there. They are out to make money, simple as that. SP2 is not bad at all. I have been using it ever since it came out. I have not had a single problem, occasional blocked program pops up and I enable it or disable it depending upon if I really want it to run.

Nos, yes it is in beta, but how about all other MS programs you have been using for years that are in beat...you know everything MS releases is never fully tested anyway. Plus, they have improved significantly over the last 3 years. I have been beta testing their MBSA V2 (recently released) for the past three months, yes there were some glitches, but nothing that hindered the program from doing what it was supposed to do.

Re: ...Password Protection...

I would love to upgrade to service pack 2 but I can't. Reason: I am using windows XP Professional that I bought from Pakistan. 2 number maal. Everytime I try to upgrade it, ofcourse it validates windows and doesn't let me do the upgrade. Unless there's a way around it, I can't upgrade to service pack 2. I've asked my parents to bring an upgrade CD made in Pakistan on their way back. They will be here next week inshallah and lets see if I can upgrade it using their CD.

Re: ...Password Protection...

........and what exactly is that?

Re: ...Password Protection...

Kaleem: That's why I said I wouldn't use an MS software if its not atleast a year old :) ... that is if there are no reasonable alternatives :p .... I've tested MSBA as well and I'm glad that MS is providing it for free and its not that bad as you said; does its job well. Also, I was happy to see the application that you provided a link to ... seems promising [just like any other MS app]
